Christina Koch Returns From Longest Ever Female Spaceflight

A new record for the longest single space mission ever undertaken by a woman was triumphantly set earlier today (Thursday, 6 February), when NASA’s Christina Koch returned safely to Earth aboard Soyuz MS-13, a few weeks shy of a full year since she left Earth for her off-planet home on the International Space Station (ISS).
Flying shoulder-to-shoulder with seasoned Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Skvortsov and Italy’s most experienced astronaut Luca Parmitano, Koch touched down near Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan at 3:12 p.m. local time (4:12 a.m. EST) to complete a voyage of 328 days, in which she orbited Earth 5,248 times, a journey of 139 million miles, roughly the equivalent of 291 trips to the Moon and back.

I watched an interview with astronaut Scott Kelly and in 2015 he was part of year-long expedition aboard the ISS for the sole purpose of studying the long-term effects of being in space on the human body. They don’t usually do 12-month missions on the ISS. The trips are usually shorter. Anyway, he said that when they take the Soyuz back to earth, as soon as they enter the atmosphere and even before getting out of it, the gravity on earth (after being in space) is shocking to your system. Interesting fact: A day after he was chosen for that mission he was disqualified for vision issues from microgravity (from previous missions) But he appealed that decision and was reinstated to head up to the ISS. Apparently space is bad on the eyes and can even cause blindness.

Just curious as to why they are carried and immediately sat down. I know that being weightless for long periods of time causes bone density issues and may be muscle problems also. Or is it due to the fact that gravity might also be a problem till the body adjusts. Maybe there just being overly cautious till they have a complete medical checkup. Just wondering .

John Lufting apparently your body is in shock the moment they land back on earth, and yes you’re right about the gravity and the air we breathe here on earth. Apparently for russia, their cosmonauts do have a health check-up after because the human body deteriorates faster in spaces.
