To me, the meaning behind this song is so deep…it’s about escapism from his troubles - all the negative voices in his head and the depression he had during the pandemic; but then realizing at the end of it (the partying) he’s still alone and nothing is resolved - the troubles don’t go away. Though it was a party scene, I didn’t feel it had a happy vibe…it was emotionally sad to me. I think the mud represents the physical manifestation of the toxicity that surrounded him. Though some people think this story line is copied from the movie ‘Like Crazy’ he said it INSPIRED him to write this song. I don’t believe it’s about a relationship at all! The girl is a mirror image of him. If you watch the choreo created for this song, you’ll see what I mean. Just my opinion.☺️

Just came here from the behind the scenes and the live; and well that is what he said in the interviews. You're right 😊. He basically used the Like Crazy movie to show that although the relationship to present his thoughts or emotions I guess: In the movie the relationship is cute and lovely on the outside, but there are real problems they keep avoiding which ultimately break them up much like Jimin during the pandemic, he tried to be happy distracting himself (the escapism imagery of the club, the dreamy synth and him asking us not to wake him up) but ultimately his feelings/ negative thoughts issues still keep seeping through (the black mud). I love that for people who don't care to get into the deep meaning, it is simply about a relashionship, well that works too I guess.

This was 💯 sultry 80s vibe! I’d recognize that sound anywhere!!! (note the signature 80s mullet) but Jimin put his special ‘stamp’ on it! This brings back old memories! He said it’s about feelings he had during the pandemic. I feel like it’s about Jimin feeling trapped and stuck unable to have fun and be himself, hang with his friends, drink, let loose, have a fling etc. Started with him in a muddy house then he enters a hidden door. But he returns to the house in the same spot and smears the camera with mud. I think that’s what set me free was also about. Pandemic isn’t over but at least he’s able to be free like he wanted.

It's not about a relationship, it's about his feelings during the pandemic. This is what he said in an interview, and he talked about it in Suchwita with SUGA.
