As someone who paints a lot of furniture and has used both the Annie Sloan & Waverly - plus their brushes.. Waverly brushes suck. Annie Sloan are really good however I've found the Dixie Bell brushes are far far superior to any others I've used. Waverly paint rocks. Seriously rocks. I love painting with it. One thing I would suggest though is when you add water to thin out the Waverly paint paint on the surface then spritz with some water. You'll have better control. Different Waverly chalk paint colors vary in how think they are. Waverly wax can be a little tricky to work with and not end up with brush marks. But once you get the technique down.. it's a wonderful wax! The finish is gorgeous and durable. I personally prefer to apply the Waverly wax with a cloth. Annie Sloan has some gorgeous colors I've not been able to recreate by mixing Waverly paints so there are times I break down and buy the expansive Annie Sloan paints. Not often anymore though. I'm not knocking Annie Sloan paints - they are wonderful! But they're very expensive paints. Dixie Bell is a good middle as far as price between the two and an absolutely excellent paint. All that said.. I bought a few synthetic brushes at my local home improvement center that are my absolute favorites.. bar none! I paid about $14 each for them. One last thing.. when using the Waverly antiquing wax.. don't mix it with the clear. It just turns everything muddy when you do and you don't get the antiquing definition.
@jenniferallred72484 жыл бұрын
I could see a large difference on the video for the comparison. Waverly did a much better job at coverage and vibrance. I use the antique wax paint full strength and it does awesome! You can even use it as a regular stain on bare wood! I don’t like the Waverly brushes, so I agree with you there. They are too stiff and the bristles fall out too much.

I love the Annie sloan for several reasons. Perhaps the most important is that I was raised in a family of wood workers who thought it sacrilege to paint anything. I love that with using Annie Sloan ( sanded lightly) paint you can still feel the grain of the wood and see the craftsmanship of the piece. Any latex or acrylic based paint will no do this. 2nd, I can paint 5-6 medium sized pieces, accent tables, chairs etc, or a whole large china cabinet or dining set with one can of Annie Sloan. It is so versatile and the palette is perfect for mixing and blending. When you do the math Waverley 8 ounce is $6 ( x-4 =$24) and Annie Sloan 32 ounce is $ 38. I do understand if you are only doing one small piece that the Waverley is cheaper, but the results are not that beautiful old world finish.

I’ve not used Annie Sloan simply due to the price. Honestly, after trying Waverly over a year ago, I’ve not gone back to anything else. The coverage is awesome and I love the color selection. The dark wax does take a bit of getting used to, but I’ve found that adding a tiny bit of clear wax to my wipe off rag keeps everything nice and prevents the muddy effect. Thank you for this video. I always used a container like a metal pie plate that I can wash and use repeatedly. I put my ASCP in it as a puddle then add about a tsp or so water to it. Mix then paint my clean surface using my Annie Sloan brush. A wet sponge distresses if you dont like dust. I use clear wax altho have pieces I've never waxed and the paint held up. Also I store my paint on a plastic dairy creamer bottle from Carnation removing the label so the paint color is clearly visible. I dont paint as often anymore altho my paint stays nice ( in the bottle not in a can) and can shake/ mix very easy. Stockists are getting harder to find. Good to see your challenge. As for myself ,it would be hard to spend money on hard brushes especially if they loose bristles or less than desirable wax. There are alot of options. Thanks for sharing.

@Donna KZbin how to make your own chalk paint for the correct ratio of plaster of Paris to paint.

@@Donna-vh5ym I use Greenway calcium carbonate and it has recipe on bag. There are concerns with inhalation of plaster of paris to consider if you go with that product. Calcium carbonate is the same as garden limestone.

Christina, thank you very much for the educational video. I've done furniture painting before-, a long time ago- and now with extra time (unemployed and quarantined), I thought of revamping a table/desk using chalk paint, which I did not know about until today. I will try the Waverly paint and share project pictures. Thanks again for the video.

💗💗💗I LOVED this video. 💗💗💗 Haven't even seen a list of any of your other videos, but subscribed anyway. I figure they must be great. I needed to see a comparison, and you explained it so well. I use waverly, but considered branching out. I would love for you to compare DIY to Waverly. I may order a sample of DIY to try though....but would still watch your comparison, if you do one. Thank you so SO much.🌹

I appreciate you doing this comparison - I am just starting to do more DIY projects for my home and I have looked for the Annie Sloan paint in my area but not being able to go online (like Walmart/Amazon/Etc.) is difficult. I have seen many people use the Waverly paint with excellent reviews so I appreciate seeing them side by side and your honesty about both products is refreshing... I agree with you on the wax - it did look better with the Annie Sloan and I think the investment of that product would be worth it for projects in the future. Quarantine has given me a lot of time to find things to do around my house and I actually really enjoy it! Thank you for sharing your talents and ideas with us and inspiring us to be creative! I hope you’re doing well and staying safe! Take care and have a wonderful weekend! Thank you again for your honest review of this product. I am excited to start doing more DIY projects!

I don't like the Waverly dark wax at all. It made my pieces look muddy, like you said. My brush marks didn't disappear with Waverly brushes.

Enjoyed your vid. Have the same opinion about annie sloan vs. waverly in my experience....stumbled upon Folk Art brand chalk paint which I found at Michaels. I've used it on several small projects, and actually prefer it to Waverly, although I've heard this brand is actually part of the Waverly line. It costs about $2 but the bottles are small (at least at the store where I shop) so it would of course add up if one needed enough for a large project...but a little goes a long way, and their color palette is for me more extensive than the waverly. Maybe if you have a chance to try it, I would love your opinion. :)

Go with the grain is what I was taught by my dad, i noticed you were going in all directions with the paint is that on purpose? 😊
@ChristinaMuscari4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a type of finish specific to chalk paint. It's just a hand painted look. You can definitely go with the grain when you are going for a smooth, modern look.

Very interesting. I’d like to see a larger piece done. I’m thinking of painting a tall (50-inch) credenza. It’s originally finished in 40s ‘mahogany-red’. But it was free and worth the effort to make over! Liked the waverly side: it seemed to cover the original finish better.

The Annie Sloan white looks kinda blotchy to me. I mostly use the colors from Rust-oleum which is half the price. I also tried cheaper brands but the ones that are available in Germany are not my cup of tea.

Paste waxes can make the paint look splotchy until they’ve dried over night.
@herbie1405824 жыл бұрын
@@bback4078 Maybe it goes away when it dries. But you can see that the coverage ist not as even as the walmart brand. I often need three coats on darker surfaces to be satisfied. White is sometimes difficult to paint.

I disagree with you there - I'm a stockist of AS paints in the UK and it really is not thin and runny - it's thick and coverage is also excellent. I am curious about this Waverley stuff - wonder where they got their idea from...hmmmm copycat springs to mind but I would give it a go if it was available here in the UK.

I've only used Waverly and Plaid brands and have not had any issues. An old trunk interior and several nightstands/tables that get used consistently, and some wall shelves. I've also used the Waverly wax. Also used the Plaid brand Classic Home chalk paint. Again, lots of colors used and I can't see they are any different and hold up well. Save your money and go cheap.

thanks for the demo with Waverly paint- I think the Plaster color is nice too! I had bought this and it's not a "stark" white but somewhat cool toned off white, not yellowy. Would be interested in reviews on Folk Art and Deco Art brands too . I'm a beginner, so don't want to spend AS prices. Seems like Folk Art has some pretty close "knock off" AS colors.
