WHAT LOW BUY IS REALLY ABOUT (for me) | how to stop shopping

Hello beauties! Today I wanted to talk about what "Low Buy" means to me, and how that has evolved as I have gone through this process of shopping less (usually), paying off debt, and becoming content and happy with my own self, as I am. I feel like I've certainly lost sight of what "Low Buy" means to me now, since for the past few months as I've gone through it, feelings of guilt have been at the forefront, instead of feelings of clarity and strength.
I wanted to share what I am starting to realize within my #LowBuy journey, and it's becoming less so about the practical side of spending less, saving money, and using what I have, but more on my self-compassion, #selflove and gratitude.
This video is not to say that I will no longer be following my #lowbuyrules and the Dave Ramsey plan, and this is not to give myself free reign to buy things or live outside my means. It's simply just figuring how how I got here, and where I want to go moving forward.
I'm so used to taking the "hard road" when it comes to be strict on myself, so the feeling of guilt can be overwhelming. Someone asked me earlier this week about this approach, and simply said "Well, how's that working for you?". It is, but it isn't, because I'm still going through many stage of guilt, feelings of failure and even embarrassment every time I decide to buy anything and it can be quite painful sometimes.
I will still be on my Low Buy journey in the context of becoming debt free, but I want my focus to be more on learning to change my perspective and REALLY start to learn to be kind to myself, to build confidence and to be grateful for everything I have now.
This isn't just about how much stuff I have, how much I bought, or how much I can get rid of. It's now about building a healthy relationship with MYSELF, and seeing how "Stuff" and Money and Impulse all tie into that, past and present.
How has the meaning of your Low Buy changed since you started? Let me know. 🙏🏻

The message I take from your channel is moderation. Detaching emotions and self-esteem from things and finding that contentment elsewhere. So things are just things. Not a symbol of success or failure. It’s far easier to create a “no-buy” channel with strict rules. But you’ve created a channel that is about long-term sustainable habits. And I like it because it’s not black and white, and it makes me think. Also your teeth are great. Honestly what is wrong with people??

Thank you for putting that into words, Mary ❤️. Honestly I was struggling with that key messaging, and I think you nailed it - thank you so much. Agree “no buy” was in some ways easier, but I feel like wasn’t a sustainable method to maintain. Very much like a crash diet.

I like Dave Ramsey & his principles BUT it is really difficult to deprive yourself of anything you enjoy until all debt is paid off. The end goal is often years in the making. You work hard and you deserve to enjoy some things in the present. Show yourself some compassion & if you blew your budget then just remember, tomorrow, next week, next month is a fresh start. Enjoy your life-with moderation, along this journey.

Hey guys, I sat down to make this video after last weeks vlog speaking about “having enough” and the focus I keep having on guilt. Just wanted to sit down in a video and share where I think those feelings are coming from. I’m feeling clearer now since making this video. I hope you’re all feeling clear and strong and confident too, and thank you (as always!) for your ongoing support in this community we’ve built together 🙏🏻❤️

First off, I always appreciate your honesty. You never strike me as someone who is trying advertise themselves as having "mastered" any of this stuff (and this stuff is hard) so thank you for that. But second, I feel that there simply *isn't* any straightforward way to dismantle the very deep rooted belief systems that we, as women, have around shopping, self-image, beauty, aging, etc. which, really, is at the heart of all of this. It's so much more nuanced than trying to stick to a budget or "be good" in terms of what we buy. All of that said, the fact that you're trying so hard to understand your motivations around why you do what you do is beyond commendable (and it's because of your channel that I'm starting to take my own a lot more seriously - thank you) because, again, this stuff is *hard*. If you can, and when you can catch yourself, use kind words toward yourself, okay? You're doing great and, the honest truth is, this particular flavor of road is a long, arduous one. Keep on keepin' on.

You are such an inspiration! I began a no buy/low buy challenge for myself after discovering your channel. At the same time I also began thinking about the need to simplify and define my personal style. Like you, I struggle with guilt about purchases that I make. At first I tried to completely stick to my no buy/low buy plan, but at times it really sucked all the joy out of living. I feel that you have come so far on a journey that is more about self discovery and self love than anything else. I’m sure I’m not the only one of your followers who appreciate your honesty and your willingness to be real about the pressures of buying too much without enough thought. Be kind to yourself!

Have you tried to set a predetermined amount of “free money?” My husband and I have about $300 in “free money” to spend on whatever (currently no debt and emergency fund done). He is into gardening so usually he buys gardening stuff (non essential) where as I use it for horse lessons every month (non essential). For you it sounds like clothes or coffee or in a non covid world dinner with friends. Obviously if you are on a debt free journey it may be like $50 but having a set amount helps us from feeling deprived & helps us to still save.
@RaizelEliasberg

I was thinking that too! She's talked about budgeting a lot, so I assume she budgets some money for clothes, takeout, a dinner etc. So is it guilt about going over budget or guilt about budgeting those things at all or? I feel life's definitely too short to not grant yourself some nice things (all in moderation obviously).

Excellent idea, I do the same. Debt free and good savings, so I “pay” myself up front about $200 to just play, my slush fund is for art supplies without guilt. Years ago I did some inner-child therapy and recreated a parent-child relationship with this inner-child focusing on removing guilt and allowing her to declare what she needs, it’s like I’m buying “her” the art supplies and it’s healing old wounds about feeling worthy and deserving vs. deprivation. Basically deciding to “be my own best friend” and buy things/say things as if I were with my best friend, I wouldn’t withhold love from my Bff, so why would I do that to myself?

Definitely think it is important to just set a budget for spending on things such as eating out, and clothes. Just making sure that things you buy are planned, and used. This gives you the freedom to do something small each month, but still keeping in your budget for paying debt.

Shopping habits are often presented as good or bad.. Many youtubers show how to make that change and spend less or/and shop more ethically.. They rarely show the struggle or question their choices or needs. I really like your channel and your honesty, I think many people feel the same way (I do) about shopping and guilt. When I first started watching your videos, your main focus/concern was getting out of debt and you talked about it frequently. Cut to today and you're on top of your shit, you are attacking your debt every month, you are conscious of it and you have your plan to be debt free someday. FANTASTIC. Mayhaps it is time for a new goal? Something that will challenge and excite you again? I don't think peeps revise and re-evaluate their goals enough. I keep track of my goals in my bullet journal, but around mid-year I always go back and look at them and see if they are still relevant to my life right NOW. We are always changing and the world is always changing (ohhhh the travel plans I had at the beginning of this year! BAH! Pipe dreams now!) I think you should think about a new goal (long or short term) in addition to your getting out of debt goal. This process might even be a fun and creative activity to explore!!

2020 was meant to be a low buy year for me. But since quarantine I’ve been buying clothes as I am ‘stuck’ with just one carry on full of wintery clothing and it’s now spring/summer where I am. But when I am home I am looking forward to returning to getting more intense on saving. But for now I’m giving myself a break as I’m in a situation quite out of my control, and that’s ok.

I’m on a low buy year. I went on it wanting to change my habits and to learn to manage my impulse buying. It was going very well until May. I started to feel deprived. I spent more time on Pinterest and KZbin and want things I would normally not want. And I would feel guilty for wanting something that is not on my allowed list. With more time on my hands because of the quarantine, I started to reflect more on my priorities. As The Minimalist have been saying, only bring things into your life that adds value. I understood that. But it really hit home with me these past few weeks. I only want to keep and bring things and people that add value to my life. I realized, those are the things that I use often and that brings me joy. So, I ordered a couple of things that I knew I would be using daily (that’s not on my allowed list). And I do not feel guilt what so ever. Which was surprising. This made me rethink about continuing my low buy year. I think, my new guidelines will be “does it add value to my life”. I will still try to stay within my budget. I think, this will make me feel happier and less guilty over bringing new things into my life. I don’t know if my thought process would have changed if I wasn’t in quarantine. We have to be adaptable to change or we will never experience or learn anything new. On another note on self compassion, I also was thinking that we are so hard on ourselves but we are compassionate, patient, understanding and loving to our friends. Why can’t we treat ourselves the same way too? I think you are doing great. You are learning and evolving and helping so many of us realize and work on being better and happier. Thank you and take care? 😘

Since I have started shopping my closet and pushing myself to wear what I have it became clear to me that the shopping impulses are not at all about wanting to wear new clothes but clearly to buy it (and receive it!). Now when I'm tempted to buy something I think "ugh, but I'll have to find a place in my already-perfect-closet and find a way to wear it on a regular basis" and right then I have the feeling of "enough" that you talk about. Shopping my closet and wearing my stuff is fun but it's also an effort..

Hi Christina, thank you for your videos which are refreshing and honest. I think if you remove all unnecessary expenses in life would really suck the joy of life, because after a while you become so unhappy and then you give up on the journey and then you would feel terrible for it. I think the key is moderation. Make small allowances and cut the biggest expenditures. So if you used make 5 purchases of clothing every month, reduce that to 1-2 and celebrate the achievement of not buying the 3 other pieces and the money saved! I’m with you on that journey. I have also made mistakes. But as I’m tripping over I’m learning from that and I’m glad I have you and this community to cheer each other on. Perseverance is the key! We are in it for the long run.

Your conversation reminds me of some learning that I’ve been doing around pain. I deal with chronic pain, pretty much for all of my life. I’ve been listening to a Canadian physiotherapist and researcher, who talks about a biopsychosocial approach to pain. He argues that it’s not just about tissue damage. It’s about all those other things in your life that can contribute to pain. Most importantly, for your conversation, he has this saying: you don’t need fixing before you start doing.; It’s the doing that is the fixing. And maybe that makes sense in your situation as well. And I’m pretty much right there with you anyway. When it comes to wanting to fix problems, wanting to complete my wardrobe, and the list goes on.

I like the reframing from “don’t do” and “rules” to what can we do, how can we evolve to meet new challenges. It feels more positive, empowering and...maybe even fun. Absolutely think it makes sense to focus less on the goal and more on the things that bring contentment or build a path in that direction. ❤️❤️❤️

Hey! Your message in this definitely resonnated with me. I am also trying to save and get really guilty when I spend money on clothing. I'm pregnant right now and needed to buy a lot during Covid and have felt guilty each time I click buy, which makes no sense: my clothes litterally don't fit and I am still working out in the public. I need to wear something! I also find David Ramsey's advice good in general but too strict and impractical in practice: it's easy to hunker down and avoid buyig anything "extra" or frivolous that brings you joy in the short term but many millenials and generation Z would need to do this for YEARS to have a real impact on their debt and savings goals due to low wages and high housing costs.

We love your journey and I can’t speak for everyone but I complete get where you’re at-I also don’t know where I’m at and choose to make every challenge or mistake as a learning curve. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. You never came across as a "perfection peddler" which is why I follow you on YT (used to follow you on FB too but that platform is too much for me to manage). Be encouraged to know that you are on a journey, and sounds like your ultimate goal is to be happy and satisfied with yourself. You are good enough as you are. It's really, really tough to unlearn decades of conditioning from our upbringing and society. Be kind to yourself. You'll achieve your goals some day. FYI, this is the 10th year of my becoming a conscious shopper. It's become easier in the last couple of years to create and stick to a workable budget, but this last December I slipped up big time and went way over budget, just because I "found" money in my annual budget. I shoulda/coulda put it away in my savings but I decided to spend it. I felt horrified for about 2 weeks, then I got over it. Taught myself something during this slip up/self-check: taking time to figure what my triggers were. Like an alcoholic, I didn't replace the sense of deprivation with a healthy activity/mindset. So taking this learning forward, aiming for another low buy quarter.

I feel you! I also want more positivity and joy in my own low buy. On my journey with healing from excessive shopping and overspending I am also dealing a lot with guilt and punishment, although none of it is happening public. But there is obviously a lot more pressure on content creators because there are lots of harsh comments from fanatic minimalists. I think we all are just too much into perfectionism and black&white thinking. We need to be moderate and put things more into perspective.

Thank you for sharing this and I can deeply relate. I feel there is a lot of worth that is placed on money and growing up in a household that valued money and how it was modeled to me. I've learned through my journey (still in progress) with money that it is a process. There are times when I'm doing well and then there are times where i'm struggling. Each time that i'm struggling I also struggle with the feelings of guilt. I'm learning to nurture those parts of me and be curious about what the guild it trying to tell me. My guilt isn't bad even though it feels painful-i'm learning that my guilt is trying to tell me something. I've learned that my guilt tells me that I want to do better and that I am doing my best and I can always try harder the next day. I appreciate how vulnerable and open you are about this--hearing this makes me feel like I'm not alone and more importantly that we are all human and we each struggle.

I'm a part of a subreddit for overspending and I notice a lot of self guilt. I think if you watch others who are experiencing coming out of no/low buys you see a lot of grappling with what is essential. I similarly don't want to live my life in fear of purchasing things that will improve my life and am looking for ways I can be thoughtful about when and what I do buy! I'm excited to hear your reflections about spending and being mindful moving forward. I'm a big fan of Greg McKeown's essentialism mindset. Instead of being minimal in all aspects, it focuses on prioritizing your own sense of what is essential to your life and happiness!

His book is on my list! I totally agree with your perspective. “Fear” is a word that I didn’t think described it, but it totally does. I like the “essential” mindset - because otherwise energy gets taken away from what’s truly important vs what I’m currently spending my energy agonizing over - thank you, Elyse!

Hi Christina. What a beautiful video, probably my favorite to date. So much of what you choose to share resonates deeply with me. I'm a handful of days from my 57th birthday and still trying to figure things out. That said, what I know for sure, is that life will always be messy, and I've learned to embrace that this is okay. When the best laid plans go awry, then good stuff happens. THAT'S what I remember, the messy parts. No matter your journey, thank you for graciously sharing, even when it's hard. I look forward to what you do moving forward. Lastly, remember that everything is going to be okay. Because it will be. Sending you love and kindness from NY!!

I think you are definitely too hard on yourself. No one here is expecting you to be perfect, we all understand and appreciate how hard no buy / low buy is, and living it via the internet is even harder! Personally when I see you admitting you’ve ‘failed’ or you’ve spent money you didn’t want to, it shows you’re a real person that I can empathise with because I do the same - you’re not some perfect overachiever who wiped out her debt in six months and preaches about how easy it is, you just need to be disciplined blah blah. Those type of people just make the rest of us feel terrible, there’s no support there. Yes it is hard, everyone struggles but no one should punish themselves for it. Guilt is a horrible emotion. Give yourself a break, we are all here supporting you! ❤️

I think Dave Ramsey’s approach is too austere. It’s like an extreme low-calorie diet, it’s sets you up to fail. I love that you acknowledge that the journey is not a smooth road. I think you only fail when you give up. My goal is to be mindful and thoughtful with shopping, and to work on contentment. I’m so grateful for your channel, your tips have helped me to curb my shopping, and move towards my goals.

I feel like this is a breakthrough moment for you! I hope that you are soon able to find peace and balance with your shopping habits, and that you are able to find the contentment you seek outside of material goods. This is something I am still very much working on myself, it is not easy by any means. I think it's completely normal to fluctuate in your spending, and it's important to show yourself love and forgiveness. Personally, with the lockdown, I have had an increased urge to online shop/buy more things. I know it is not fulfilling longterm and need to find a creative outlet instead of shopping. Best of luck on your journey! Glad you're realizing that the only person who's opinion should count is your own. If we attempt to live our lives to meet the expectations of others, we will never truly be happy with ourselves.

I always love these videos from you. They’re open, honest and thoughtful. And I can totally appreciate where you’re coming from with putting yourself out there on YT/the net in general. Sometimes I think it’s lost that you are only human and are imperfect - you’ll make mistakes and sometimes your actions won’t line up with your best intentions, and that’s okay. Also, I can’t believe people are commenting on your teeth? Wtf. I’ve had some pretty savage comments in the past; got one on my blog just this week telling me I looked like a man in transition to becoming a woman! 🤣 anonymity emboldens people to say the most outlandish or potentially harmful things. Hehe anyway, as always, loved this video. Hope you’re having a great weekend Christina! 😘

Sounds like an amazing direction for your channel! I continually struggle with being content. As soon as I buy one thing that I think "solves" a "problem" (i.e., I "need" a smaller handbag), I think up a new "problem" (i.e., I need a slightly larger handbag). In truth, I feel uncomfortable with money. Spending it alleviates my anxiety for a short amount of time, but only creates problems later. In any event, I hope you can be kinder to yourself. You are an essential worker, placing your health on the line to help others. If you want to treat yourself during this stressful time, I don't think it is a sign of failure or slipping backward. You are always holding yourself accountable, which is inspirational.

Hey! I totally get it and where you’re coming from. It’s so tough to find a balance but you have to try to be easy on yourself because of the pandemic and you having to go into work each day might bring feelings of negativity and buying clothes might be your way of bringing positivity to your space. I would suggest trying to focus on gratefulness when you feel the urge to shop etc. it’s helped me a lot and playing in my wardrobe has helped ( tips from you!!!) I feel I have been able to achieve no buy for myself since this pandemic hit. It’s opened my eyes a lot and what’s more important in this world. I hope and pray that you will find peace and satisfaction in the items you have and we are always here to support you n each other. 💕💕💕

I am learning not to compete, compare or explain myself to anyone I am also learning to stop over thinking everything that I do. Honestly a lot of things that we go through have a lot to do with the people that are in our lives. We try so hard to keep up with them. Because we as people we have a bad habit of thinking that other people are doing so much better than us. I know that it's hard to love our self. I'm at a point in my life it a person makes me feel bad I don't want to be around them. I'm talking family or a so call friend. Have a great day and be happy ♥️♥️♥️♥️

For me what's been helpful is setting a monthly budget for spending money. That way if I order takeout or buy clothes or whatever, I don't feel guilty. Every payday (2 x a month), I set aside some money specifically for this budget. I dont feel like I have to justify what I bought because the budget is set aside in advance.

I really like this approach - I often would set it to zero and still turn it into a way to get upset with myself as a failure. This method is way more reasonable, and if I don’t spend the money, it goes into the loan. Makes more sense and is much kinder and more balanced - that never occurred to me as a viable option but it is 🙏🏻

I don’t think Dave Ramsey’s shame based approach works for everyone and that’s okay. There are so many other personal finance channels that more closely align with the view that yes you should save, attack debt and plan for your future but it’s also OKAY to spend money on things that make you happy and life more enjoyable if it’s within your means. I watch “One Big Happy Life” they are a husband and wife team who are both banking and consumer finance lawyers and offer a less shame and guilt based approach. I have a TON of law school debt but I really enjoy fashion and I didn’t want to wait until I was done paying off all my debt before I could buy ANY new clothes. So I set a modest budget of the absolute cap of what I can spend per month on clothes and the rest goes to essentials, savings and debt repayment. You already strive and have accomplished so much! Thank you for being vulnerable and honest on your channel. We don’t expect you to be perfect if anything we find your transparency so refreshing!

style apotheca yes we can! ❤️ Also another thing I forgot to mention...I can’t remember if this is a Dave Ramsey thing but only having $1000 as an emergency fund and spending the rest on debt repayment can put us in a very precarious situation. Both my husband and I have been laid off because of COVID-19 but we have a healthy amount of savings to keep us going for a year with no income. We can’t prioritize debt when we have to make sure we can eat and have a roof over our heads! If we had put all our money towards debt we would have been screwed 😅

I'd love to see a video from you about this topic that you brought up: you know that emotional buying (which is different from impulse buying) is generated by the wish to hide difficult feelings, and as such you try to minimize shopping sessions caused by unpleasant feelings. But there's also some kind of spending money that is ok, is not bad, but it can keep one from achieving their goals. How do you know how much is ok to spend for things like travel (fancy hotel), gym (personal trainer, which I can confirm actually make a difference vs classes), swimming (and another personal trainer), learning a new language (within a class, also paid, even though I don't have an immediate need to know that language). Those are the kind of things I mostly spend my non-essential money on, and is you just say it like this, it sounds like I'm giving money on health and learning stuff, which is something generally accepted and praised. Also taking holidays is generally praised, and indeed, one half of year-1 full year with no proper holiday is very tiredsome. I guess life is made by months when one spends a lot of things, and invests in oneself, and months/ years when self investment is not a top priority, but saving money for a goal is.

@style apotheca Why don't you allow yourself to have that special coffee, dinner, and take out sometimes, just not every single day. When it comes to clothes is where I feel like you buy too many repeats/duplicates. If you have a gap in your wardrobe, something you're truly missing, then buy it. But if you have a craving to buy another blazer and another pair of jeans - hold off, you have too may of those. Basically don't buy repeats. Just an outside perspective :).

I think it's far easier to "do" than "not do". For instance, I finally started a savings account several months ago, and no matter how much I overspend, there is a set amount going into my savings. When I see my savings account from grow, I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. I find it very hard to not spend money when I see something I like, and it's been amplified during the quarantine. While I'm still thankfully working from home, I find I have even more time to scroll through shopping sites. And I've felt the guilt as well. Ok so I gotta ask... Why the f is anyone commenting on your teeth?? As a braces-wearer, I don't see any issues with your teeth but the internet is weird.

Lol I don’t know if it’s the color or shape or what. They are crowned because my original front teeth were very small and short, and I find they have a grey undertone to them sometimes - maybe that’s what they see? Also I totally agree - the key is “doing” - it’s also a positive perspective instead of a negative one which I find more motivating. You are so right! And congrats on your savings account!

Hello from Toronto! I love your channel and have been following you for some time. Living responsibly (no bebt, some savings...) is very important. Being self-suficient is crucial as we can see from this pandemic. Government will eventually run out of money (which they have been giving out so freely right now) and things will get really tough. But balance is very neccessary. You have been so strict with yourself that even if you buy something you are not enjoying it and are full of guilt. To me it seems like waste of money. I only buy what I need and occasionally I find something that I really love. Then I think about it, imagine it in my life, in my daily activities, with my other clothes and accessories... and only if it 'fits in' really well I may decide to buy it. No guilt, no regret, just joy. There is no end to possibilities, so choose wisely :-) and ENJOY!

Why don’t you gave yourself 2 years to pay off your debt and allow yourself to enjoy life too? You don’t fail anyone here by working out how to pay the loan and also love your wardrobe and life. I think that setting up yet another psychological stick to beat yourself with ...like calling yourself stupid if you buy just makes the whole situation worse, perhaps being kind to yourself may be a key. You work hard and you’re very honest with the community.
