I think she went way beyond snobbish, she is attacking Christine like she was Osama Bin Laden! She had a brief affair with a cabinet minister when she was under 21, hardly the crime of the century. Christine was hounded by the press and vilified the rest of her life, Profumo carried on having tea with the Queen Mother etc, his life hardly changed, and he had £9 million, which probably warded of the press hounding him. Sue Lawley should be ashamed of herself, why shouldn't Christine tell her side of it, its not as if those of us old enough to remember, did not want to hear her side, we did, and I am thankful that Christine managed to eventually tell her story.

I don't think Hurt could anticipate the sniping + demonising of CK, he may have thought it would be a typical Film premier interview, not the aggressive one he got from Lawley. She illustrates the maturing of the right winger who thinks she's in a Cold War as an operative. Her duty is to make the viewers think CK is like Lawley + incapable of love ...Psychopath but it simply reveals Lawley personality disorder.

She was 19 to my knowledge and hardly either naive or an innocent and provided sexual favours because she liked the very expensive gifts and enjoyed the sex. Because it all came to light at the time, later on she had a lot of regrets. It’s like drinking a lot then having a bad hangover. She had nothing to regret at all but the whole affair left a stain on her all her life. Unlike Mandy, former mistress of Rachman (who unfortunately for her) had a heart attack in a cab and died. She went on to build a career afterwards appearing in various soft porn films.

Amazing to see how viciously judgmental Lawley is in this interview, 25 years ago. Thank god things have moved on and you just wouldn't get this kind of bitchy puritanical attack in a serious BBC interview today. Her only compassion seemed to be for Profumo, who waa still alive, comfortable and healthy and needed no sympathy. It was left to John Hurt to make the deliciously pointed rebuff that Stephen Ward, by contrast, was dead.
@jinnymudlark18155 жыл бұрын

Lawley puts it to them that the film shouldn't be made out of respect for John Profumo and his family. So should Keeler keep quiet and go on being scapegoated for the actions of grown men? Keeler was little more than a girl at the time of the scandal. Perhaps Profumo should have done a stint in prison just like Keeler had to. People have been blaming women for anything that ends badly since Adam and Eve.
@sillavnitram4 жыл бұрын
I think Lawley came across as Snooty, Stuck Up and without regard to Christine and how such a young girl was manipulated, used and abused. Even if at times it may have seemed that Christine was using the situation to her own advantage, I think it's very clear how much influence Steven Ward had on her and as she said "He controlled my mind!" Profumo was the villain regardless of how much he and his family suffered, he had a choice and he made the wrong one! Women in the sixties despite the supposed liberation were very much put down by the male attitude towards them, especially by those of a particular class and establishment! So, I say in very many respects, well done to her, sadly though she also paid the consequences.

Sue Lawley born in the Blackcountry. Elocution lessons improved her accent, the BBC salary improved her wardrobe but sadly her interviewing technique was cold and judgemental. She's exactly the same on Desert Island Discs. You can see Christine desperately trying to put her experience across and John Hurts distain is evidenced by his silence. RIP Stephen Ward treated as a sacrificial lamb to protect the so called moral establishment.
