Why invite her on the show to present her work only to laugh at and mock her and her artwork. As an artist that is an absolute nightmare, the most humiliating and frightening thing to even think about. 30 years later and Westwood is the only person on that stage remembered. She's an icon and an artistic genius.

@@tami8458 good point both of you. It’s sad that someone’s invited with one context and it becomes a comedy piece. Can you imagine if a male designer like Jean Paul Gaultier was asked on with his designs for costuming for Fifth Element to be featured (have o got that right?) and then the audience looks at Gary Oldmans (Zorg?) outfit askance with chuckling. No one would be laughing at film costuming or at plotting ridiculousness…..

She truly is! I’m only 23 so I didn’t watch this at the time but watching this clip disgusts me. I met Vivienne at my workplace in clapham last week and she was incredibly sweet. She came up to me and complimented my Afro and style and we talked about fashion and the environment and music from the 70s and 80s. She’s so humble and talented and I’m glad that she’s left her mark on the industry and world!!🙌🏿💜

Totally agree Collette. Lawley was encouraging Harty and should have shut him down. But that doesn’t make “good telly” does it?! Was this before or after Harty was leathered by Grace Jones for conducting a conversation behind her back. Twice. I know Grace sometimes came across as a bit tricky but you can hardly blame her for having her guard up around Harty if this is how he conducted himself. And my guess is that he was as nice as pie off camera ??? Can anyone shed light on it?! 💡

RIP Viv, never underestimate the power of clothing. So much of the 70s and 80s was defined by what you wore. Everybody was unemployed, and your identity was what group you belonged to, rockers, new romantic, punks, goths, new wavers. Viv was so influential in so many lives. They were who they were, because of her. Clothing doesnt mean much, but when its all you have, it is everything you hold on to.

Westwood knew exactly what she was doing by appearing on this show: It was a two-fingered gesture to the Establishment. @@dodibenabba1378 Not sure that's the right way to describe it. Westwood made her name as a leading figure in the punk era, and punk and the people associated with it were deeply unfashionable and out of favour in the capitalist Thatcher-dominated mid/late 80s. It's as simple as that - regarding both punk fashion itself and the left-wing politics associated with it. Rude as it is, the interview merely reflects the mood of the times. Dame Vivienne has had the last laugh though. Those ahead of their time are often mocked.

I remember when this happened, I was only little. Vivienne Westwood is a fashion icon and fashion historian, I hated the behaviour at the time - it feels like an attack on the working classes - Vivienne's links with the punk movement and coming from a working class family in Derbyshire. Russell Harty is just being deliberately obtuse - clearly the mini crini isn't something designed for the purpose of doing your weekly shop, what a ridiculous thing to say. I would wear that, I love the classic tailoring and grecian inputs with the capes and overcoats. His slack jawed expression just annoys me, he looks like some weird fish that smokes 40 a day.

what i find really interesting is that people call her crazy, delusional, stupid, stuck up, out of touch, but VW is highly influenced by world history; her designs are super grounded and have a lot of context. you're all yapping on about "tradition", "good taste" and "decorum" and yet she's more aware and educated on it than you ever will be. she can definitely be shy and awkward when talking about what she loves but she knows exactly what she's reworking or tearing apart & she's having (OMG) fun with it. i have more respect for people who critique her for being a collage maker rather than an innovator (even though i disagree) than for anyone who just thinks she's pretentious or daft.

It wasn't the BBC's fault - they were laughing because they were ridiculous - It wasn't rude - she was just shown as she was.... And calling Russell Harty the voice of the 'everyman' just shows how out of touch the commentator is... 612 likes after 15 years says it all...

I have been wearing Vivienne's clothing since the 1970's she is one of the most influential designers ever in history...Sue Lawley, Russel Harty are disposable, a million would be media students could do a better job tomorrow...She encouraged them to laugh to gain power over the audience...it's a cheap trick, narrow minded presenting and I have seen photographs of Mizz Lawley wearing Westwood..makes you laugh really..

Just discovered Sue Langley's interviews from 90ties - Desert island disc (I am not British). What a narcissistic, mean woman she was. This program is interesting from psychological and sociological point of you (as well as interesting part of history) but gives very negative vibes. Not portrays BBC in a good light.

The clothes and attitude behind the clothes is too 'original' and the British have always had problems with anyone or anything that seems outside the tribe. Most of these clothes you now see people wearing; again Viv was, like most original artists, in front of the times.

What did Vivienne expect people to do on a prime time, middle of the road show like this in the mid 80s?! Strange that she chose to go on as a guest, instead of going in the South Bank Show or something that would be much more open and accepting. This is a Britain that was still laughing at Bernard manning and whoops matron jokes and the two Ronnies.
@TibetanFox68

You sound like a total snob. So because the audience didn't appreciate "art" they are all lower class idiots? The audience had a right to laugh at the costumes because, frankly, they DID look stupid. It's the presenter and Russell Harty who were in the wrong for ridiculing her, not the audience.

Have you seen Wogan he is an Irish piss taker he would of been the first to ask what’s this about then ? Probably why he decided to go on holiday like he didn’t want to be sat having to defend an eccentric fashion designer at a time when people didn’t understand that expression stuff at all and were brought up in a world of power cuts miner strikers and wars , Of course today with our child like attitudes to life based on our own decadent need for nothing society we can all appreciate someone who wears clothes like that woman off the Hunger Games. I mean Lady Gaga eat ya heart out but back in the 80’s when the government was fighting miners and Argentina and society had reached a cross roads between serious WW2 1950’s black and white and the new punk revolution inspired kids of the 1960’s times were very different I mean back then there was no internet most people thought who is this mental health patient and why is she on Wogan ? But the fact people laughed is great it’s an expression of there opinions I mean GB was still at heart a very traditional country and working class people didn’t have the money to waste on these eccentric crazy clothes, Only the rich people of the upper class could do that
