In Jamaica some years ago there was the same issue of aggressive hawkers. You would get the "Jamaican Handshake", where they would shake your hand and then not let go. My wife learned to dress down in town, slightly shabby, with her hair under a hat.. And I got some reflecto sunglasses for us, because if they could not see your eyes it put them off.

I am a Tanzanian and have been to Zanzibar and I can say I genuinely hate hawkers, I mean yes it's business and people always trying to sell their products but it exhausting and not just to tourist even when you are a local and doing an inside tour, and the thing about negotiating prices it's like Tanzanian culture which I hate, they don't do this to just to tourist even to locals the price depends on how you look but being a Tanzanian I know how to handle it and I always gets the actual price. ps; they say to you something is 50 US dollars you say I have 15 and trust me they will try to go tell you to add more money but always add two dollars more until you reach half the price they told you because it's always the actual price. and if they say no just leave and go to another place, they will try to stop you and sell to you at the price you said or selling to you at the actual price. But also be aware some will always tell you the actual price and if you negotiate they will not decrease the price at all then know it's the actual price. and another thing you can do try to make friend with local tourist you meet and ask them to help you with prices or sometimes you can ask them to guess for you an actual price for something

Zanzibar is very beautiful but you're absolutely right... it is EXHAUSTING being constantly (and I do mean CONSTANTLY) hounded by hawkers and touts. It can be so difficult to get a moment's peace. They are known as "papasi" - which is Swahili for 'ticks' - and you will come to understand why. They are tenacious little bloodsuckers who will not leave you alone no matter how many times you tell them to go away. You cannot even go to a bar for a quiet drink because someone will sit down next to you immediately and try to sell you something. And there really isn't anyone on the island who isn't running some kind of hustle. I'm glad I went but I would never go back.

Is it best to use US currency or Tanzanian shillings on the island?
@ChristineLozada3 жыл бұрын
In all the places I visited on the island, I only had the choice of using Tanzanian shillings. There are places you can exchange your dollars and better rates are given to larger bills (ie 50s and 100s vs. 20s and 10s)
@lucciannersylvester25503 жыл бұрын
Another thing change your dollar into Tanzanian Shillings before you go to the island (let's say you if land first at mainland Tanzania) because the exchange rates at the island are quite high unless you find a Bank and it's not possible to find a bank at Nungwi or Paje, so just be ready with that.

What malaria drug you take in Africa?
@ChristineLozada3 жыл бұрын
Because I didn't go to Tanzania mainland on this trip, I didn't do malaria pills
@lucciannersylvester25503 жыл бұрын
There are different types of malaria pills, but on the island, there no many mosquitos and sometimes no mosquitos at all so do not worry about catching malaria there. unless you going to the mainland but also depends on the region you are going to. If you going north there are no mosquitos to few mosquitos like in Arusha and also south like Mbeya. but if you're going to Dar es Salaam from October to January there are not many mosquitos but from February to September there are a lot of mosquitos mostly at night but also depends on the area you will be staying in. However , I would advice to sleep in mosquito net here or sometimes you will find hotel rooms with mosquito-proof so you will be okay. if it happens that you catch Maralia do not be terrified because it can be cured. There are different type of pills as well, there are strong ones you just take once and you will have to drink a lot of water and there are not too strong ones which you will have to take for a couple of days, I recommend take a strong one and drink a lot of water rather than taking less strong for a couple of weeks (speaking from experience). but don't fear you will really catch malaria its not like how it is shown on medias
