I'm in Nebraska (not too far from your beloved Minnesota) and we are going from 50 degree weather to being in the middle of a blizzard expecting 8-12 inches of snow. I was thinking of your wonderful song early this morning as I gazed out my window and watched the "silence of snow" fill my world. When I moved back to New England from Oregon to 2 1/2 years I thought I would be celebrating the holidays with my family again. But my brother has passed away since and my sister and I don't get along still. My niece is with her in-laws, my nephew stays home with his family and my son lives in philly. So I spent the day today with my brother's widow who I love very much. I had never even met her until I moved home but we get along great!

Merry Christmas, Linda. I definitely understand the melancholy feelings at Christmas. I am sorry you did not get to spend the holiday with your parents. My parents are around the same age as yours, and I am lucky to still have them with me. But the way we celebrate the holidays has changed with time, due to their age and other changes in the family. I feel nostalgic for the way Christmas used to be for us years ago. I feel so acutely aware of the passage of time, and how quickly life goes by. It does not help that it is VERY dreary here in Minnesota. It has been raining since yesterday ( 12/24.) NOT the weather to put one in a festive mood. I hope you enjoy the love and comfort of friends this holiday, and I wish you the best in the new year.

I have followed you since Star Search, and you have made many happy days happier and sad days brighter and hopeful. The holidays are sad for me because of the commercialism of it, the all the time christmas music, and the pressures of multiple family, friend and office get togethers. We had one big party this year for family, and that would be enough for me - get rid of all of the rest and I'd be far happier.

Totally get the melancholy feeling; it’s the happiness and love you feel seeing all the festive decorations and gifts, makes you feel like a child again and that is where all the people are who are no longer with us. Last night's sky was crystal clear, and summer solstice warm. Watched the moon chase Venus across the Southern sky. The wallabies got extra pellets, and the ducks got a bean mash to go with their grain. Having grown up in the Northern Hemisphere, Christmas will always be a mid-winter celebration for me. This is something else. Just a summery get together with family and friends. Less melancholy because of the long, sunny days. Thanks for lovely reflection on Christmases up north.
