I bought the toiler one for my boys (23&18) and it was one of the best f*** *t gifts I have ever bought, they were so surprised and delighted by it, we had great fun chopping it with a hammer and chisel and it lasted for ages.

“What’s the big deal with peanut butter and jelly?” Emma, have you never had a PB&J?! You don’t have to buy goober, but do try peanut butter and jelly at some point. It’s a classic here in the US! I had it almost every day for lunch as a kid.

As an American, PB&J is a classic quick reliable nostalgic little snacky. As a kid I had it ALL the time. As an adult, I make a quick one when I’m in a rush or just want a somewhat filling snack. However we don’t often buy them the pbj in the same jar. 10/10 highly recommend 😋

The deal with PB&J actually goes back to the Great Depression and the American GI’s during WWII. During the Great Depression in the US in the 1930’s, there was a lot of food insecurity in the US and a lot of people were living in “shantytowns” or “Hoovervilles” which were areas of cobbled together shacks and tents. People were starving. The US was also having a major drought. The US government and experts in nutrition were looking for products that were very nutritionally dense, high in calories, and shelf-stable. Peanut butter fit the bill. So peanut butter sandwiches became a thing served at soup kitchens and schools to give starving children a boost. They would add jelly or jam to give it a little extra flavor and more carbohydrates for energy (nowadays that freaks people out but you’ve got to remember, people were starving and needed more calories). When WWII began, the sandwiches became a standard in the US military because they were calorically dense and could feed an army cheaply. GI’s came home from the war with a taste for them. And from there they just became an American classic. Cheap, easy, and mostly shelf-stable. In fact, recently a group of government dietitians here in the US promoted them because deli meats are now known to be slightly carcinogenic and lead to health problems like heart disease. Plus, you can overload a deli sandwich with high calorie toppings, but there’s only so much peanut butter and jelly you can put between two pieces of bread before it falls apart. And it’s completely plant-based. (Side note: American jelly is made just like jam only it’s made with just fruit juice and no fruit solids. In the US, jam has pieces of fruit in it, and preserves contain whole fruits. These are actually legal definitions regulated by the USDA.)

Goober is a nickname for peanuts. Goober Grape is marketed to kids really but are you ever too old for the PBJ? I've never been a fan of the mix in the jar though. I like my PB on one slice of bread and my J on the other. Put some potato chips in the middle and it's perfection in a sandwich.
