I enjoy Christmas very much, but New Year completely passes me by & always has done. It’s just another day to me & I treat it as such. I have always refused to go out & ‘mingle’ on that night & much prefer to stay at home & don’t even stay up for the Midnight shenanigans.

Christmas is getting harder as I get older. My parents now both gone and the second Christmas without my husband of nearly 50 years. I know it’s life and I have a son and his family (100 miles away but will be with them) and we have to adapt but all the November Christmas adverts are really getting me down - we are not all in the “happy family” space. Sending love to all who are feeling this way ❤ Sue

I don’t have any family left but I see Christmas as a day to enjoy nice food and be grateful for the good things. I have such good people in my life, my partner and I have been together for 35 years, my close friends and my carers are kind, thoughtful, trustworthy and have integrity. They also have superb and ironic senses of humour. I feel supported and loved. It’s good to have a time to be thankful for being alive especially when remembering those who we’ve lost. They would want us to live the best way that we can. Because I’m older I do still send Christmas cards to older friends who don’t use the internet. It’s a good way to keep in touch and I too write them all early to send mid December. My hand aches from writing because I never write much anymore. Young people think it’s mad to send cards. Thanks for a lovely video Caroline.

Thanks for a lovely chatty vlog again Caroline. I know what you mean about Christmas. I too am not a fan, having never had children and worse this year as we lost our precious dog. So, you asked if anyone is doing anything different this year for Christmas. Having just returned off the Queen Anne, we were looking today to see if there was a Christmas as cruise for a about 12 days and the Victoria is doing one to Lisbon and the canaries, so we might do that. The thought of being here over that period doesn’t thrill me this year and sitting down to roast turkey also doesn’t! So, I’m working on my husband to see if we can book this cruise which leaves on the 16th. Perfect. You’ve got your Queen Mary to look forward to. Are you doing it the same way again, NYC to s’hampton? We did it the other way so would be keen to do a return trip at some point. I’m sure you’re going to have a wonderful time and I look forward to your vlog about it. Have a great weekend x

I still love Christmas, even tho sometimes I spend it alone. The Christmas music, the decorations, the commercials, the movies, etc, all make a great season. My mom no longer with me, and I so miss her, and my kids are grown , but I love buying gifts for grand children, even tho my spending has become smaller since I’m retired. Now. I love your videos, and how you spend your day. Love your sweet kitty. I wish I could travel as much as you. ❤️

I love to receive Christmas cards, because sometimes (especially these days ) you don’t hear from cousins and friends as often as we used to and I keep them after and read them properly and love the verses . Then I recycle for next years Christmas cards that I make or junk journals . So yes I’m like your mum , don’t want to lose them. I love seeing Ron , sweet old guy you love him so much I can tell ❤

Love this vlog. Christmas has always been a whole family gathering of around 30-35 people, which is lovely. We’ve rotated around a handful of families to host. Last year it changed for reasons I won’t go into and I celebrated Christmas with my husband and 2 young adult children, still living at home. I was feeling a little anxious at the thought of our day being just us but it was wonderful. So relaxed, intimate and a quality day together. I send Christmas cards to my extended family and good friends. I love the tradition of writing them over several nights the week before December. I take the time to reflect on the year spent with the person I’m writing to and try to personalise my message. I like to enjoy a bottle of Baileys while I write! My gift list has dramatically reduced, only giving to my hubby and kids and close friends. It takes the stress out of Christmas. Gift giving should be enjoyable but I found it a chore when trying to buy for everyone. Spending time with people you care about is what’s important, I feel. I have put the teeth whitener on my wish list for this year! Love Twixmas! You have no idea what day it is, no expectations or structure. It’s wonderful!

Hi Caroline, totally agree about xmas, definitely not as much fun as you get older especially if you've lost loved ones. But my first grandson was born last month so this xmas will be the start of a new era for us. Re presents, we only buy for immediate family but we do play "Bad Santa/White Elephant" on Christmas day which is hilarious and great fun way to replace the traditional gift giving activity on xmas day. It's nice to have presents under the tree too!

Ooh! Your new printer looks fab. As an ex teacher, I would have loved one of those. My eldest daughter is now a teacher too and is still in that very enthusiastic stage that I once was. I am in total agreement with you about Christmas. Two granddaughters do make us make an effort, but that is the rub. It is an effort. I also have my birthday on Dec 22nd (as does my youngest granddaughter) and find that it gets lost in the build up to the big day. By the 26th, I am exhausted! My husband, son in law and two daughters do help, but I still feel enormous pressure. Self inflicted, I know. Yes, we are cutting down on Christmas cards this year. Postage costs are ridiculous. It’s the same with Christmas presents. Immediate family only. And on that bah humbug note, I wish everyone on here a very happy Christmas. 🎄

Hi Caroline, I have hosted Christmas every year since around 1989, 10 being the fewest and 16 being the most ( that was a bit like eating in a bus queue 😆). This year we’re in the middle of building work to extend our kitchen which wont be finished until early in the New Year. So this year we’re going to my daughters and her partner. We have a six yr old granddaughter who is already beyond excited. Apparently I’m still head chef but who knows……..this may herald a change for the coming years. As I have frequently pointed out you don’t know you can’t do it unless you try to do it 🤷🏻. Here’s hoping. I wish you and yours a very happy time together. Give your dad his place. He will still be a part of you all. There’s no greater blessing than a good dad. 🙃🎄

I am sad about the demise of Christmas cards, but understand it. I am an artist, and one of the things I enjoy most is painting each card individually - and I know the recipients appreciate them too. I live away from my home country, so keeping in touch with my family is of the utmost important (at least to me!!). Christmas is a melancholy time for the two of us - and brings into focus how difficult the situation is with divorced children. Not that it was ever easy - we were always passed over for the other family, never invited, as we were the easiest to placate - and that was always miserable. This is the first year I have ever thought that I might not bother to decorate. It seems so pointless - although I may change my mind. The 3D printer looked like so much fun - great gift! May I just say that your post was such a welcome respite from what has just happened in the US - thanks!

Lovely vlog, Caroline. I’m doing my usual Christmas - just me and my cats. I only send a present to one person - the Holland & Barrett advent calendar. And she sends the same to me. Well, H&B delivers them. We both enjoy opening one day at a time during December. With other people, we’ve agreed not to exchange gifts because it’s easier to buy what we need for ourselves. It’s a friend’s 70th next year so I’ll make an exception for that. I’ve more or less given up sending cards because of the cost of postage. I’ll send a few, but not many. I’m always kind of relieved when it’s all over.

For us Christmas isn’t the same these days, 1 son lives in Essex and 1 not far from us. Sometimes we go to Essex and if we stay home we nip to our sons to see the grandchildren but there are 8 people living in their small home and it’s a bit cramped and noisy and we live in an apartment which isn’t big enough to have them all here. To be fair we both like a quiet Christmas at home, comfy chair, watch what we want, eat what we want when we want. It’s different these days that’s all.

Enjoyed that thanks. Living in Spain I find Christmas really hard. Overthink the ones where my daughter was little. Difficult to fly over as its so expensive and nowhere reasonable to stay. Actually going end Nov bit for some reason I want to act like Mrs Claus and give pressies to her in readiness for the big day..honestly put so much pressure on myself. May just do a M&S run and get some nice festive foods for them? Christmas can be lonely here though we try our best to see the City lights etc. feeling very low at the thought. Usually planning the tree decs. Meg is visiting us next week so I may put the tree up on the 17th Nov so she can enjoy my decs. Crazy eh! I feel a little jealous of her going to her partners parents every year and having the big family Christmas day but nice to be here away from the commercialism..does that make sense. Anyway conflicting emotions. Love listening to you Caroline and your day in the life of xxx

I went to Hong Kong last year and returned 8th December. Put my decorations up before I went. It was lovely to come back to. Certainly helped with holiday blues 😢 Greta vlog Caroline as always .

I feel the same as you about the grey dress, I don’t like where the seam sits on the bust. It would be better just under the bust.

Know what you mean about Xmas not being quite the same without little ones Caroline. Our twenty something sons and their respective partners, along with my husband and I, take turns to organize a semi secret (not always kept) fun, light hearted pre, or post Xmas family activity. Last year it was all painting our own version of a reindeer on small canvases, ( the results were varied and hilarious) and this year I hear whispers of a family sand castle competition on our local beach. We live in N.Z so summer for us. It's such a blessing to have two adult sons who are thoughtful and connected, and value family time, and who both have lovely partners who are just as connected to our family. If in the future they have children, then I guess things will become a little more lively and exciting around Xmas, but for now, we are so grateful. These sorts of things don't cost anything, or are even free and it's so nice that they all take a part in doing the organizing to make it happen.

Love Christmas- i dont have children or even siblings but nevertheless love it. Appreciate sadly the cost of postage is stopping some cards being sent which for some people makes Christmas not feel so isolated- buy charity ones folkS!! Xx

I’ve never liked New Year. Not even when I was a youngster. I always looked around to see everyone having a ball, and wondered what the hell was wrong with me. The last twenty years I’ve gone to bed with Jools Holland’s Hootenanny.

Hi Caroline I had some nausea on the first day, but I’ve bought some lemon and ginger tea and put little bit of honey in and been sipping on that and it really really helps, also I’ve seen a lot of people are buying a 5 mg pen but doing 45 clicks (rather than 60, which is the full dose )so they only take 3.75 mg if they are struggling with the 5 ,as it seems a lot of people do . Not sure how as I’m still in my first week so I’ve not tried , but I’ve been watching tons of videos on TikTok and seeing people discussing this. x

Christmas is for children definitely. I spent years feeling guilty about not being in the right place….when at my family home I felt I should be at my in-laws and vice versa! I make sure my sons are happy, healthy and free to do their own thing. It’s only one or two days for heavens sake and the majority of people aren’t bothered about the real religious meaning anyway!! Mad material world xxx

Great vlog Caroline with some top quality ranting! 😂 I love Christmas, and as somebody who didn't have children I find the concept of 'Christmas is for kids' very odd. In fact, (incoming controversial view alert) the 'childrenny' bits of Christmas (the bits that children get most excited about) are, for me, the bits that it should be about the least - presents, toys, Santa Claus etc. For me, Christmas is about that peaceful time of togetherness, reflection, feeling spiritual (in whatever way that means for each individual) etc. Hubby and I have always spent Christmas alone, enjoying each other's company, celebrating in the way that suits us best. I suppose it's all we've known as a couple but I suppose what I'm saying is that I always feel sad when people who DID have kids say they no longer enjoy it as much, when it can be such a fantastic time for adults too! Re: Xmas cards, my main concern is that many charities (especially smaller ones) raise a lot of money through selling cards. It would be a shame if that income stream was lost to them - especially with the added pressures of the recent budget having such an impact... it is a worry to me. 😢 Anyway, it was lovely to see Ron. He is so cute. ❤ xxx
