Good day to all, I`m a roman catholic priest in Germany, but having seen this Midnight Mass, I really was so pleased by the lovely liturgy, the vestments and above all the excellent music. My dear brothers and sisters in the Church of England, i only can say: Welcome, wonderful and thank you for this remarkable service!!!

Can anyone give the name of the Latin song sung at the beginning of the mass?
@patrickspiers71552 жыл бұрын
It is the Introit from the Gregorian rite of the Catholic church...Dominus Dixit ad me. It has been sung at the beginning of every Latin Mass for the nativity since written many hundreds of years ago. It is sung in most Catholic churches and ALWAYS in St Peters Rome. As a Catholic choir master, we sing this but I have to say, seldom have I heard it sung so beautifully... well done Croydon choir...what an absolute treasure! God Bless you all. x

Nicely done and I love the diversity of the congregation and choir. No expert on London and surrounding neighborhoods here in Yankee land but Croydon seems very far from the "posh" districts. On a channel named after Archbishop Cranmer it is more than strange to see such Anglo-Catholic "we can do high mass better than the Latin church" . After all Cranmer died a grisly death at the hands of "Bloody" Queen Mary for rejecting both the ceremonial and theological viewpoints shown here.
@colinlavelle78063 жыл бұрын
Exactly....Cranmer loathed the mass and I'm sure he celebrated mass (reluctantly) because he had to to stay in favour with Henry VIII. He also loathed any pretence at the true presence in the eucharist.

@TheRenaissanceman65 Gospel processions are regularly done in both broad church and high church Episcopal churches with enough clergy and assisting liturgical party (a distinct minority these days). The gospel is read "among the people". Modern Roman Catholics also do a truncated procession on Sundays to the speaking stand ("ambo"?) with thurifer and torch bearers. They don't leave the chancel to mix with the unwashed. The sermon length was likely dictated by a BBC production assistant named Jeremy to "fit " in the time constraints of the broadcast. Anglican or R.C. had nothing to do with it.
@eatonjask4 жыл бұрын
@TheRenaissanceman65 "And the sermon was less than 10 minutes - very un-Protestant." As the Anglican Church isn't Protestant, very appropriate.
@eatonjask4 жыл бұрын
@TheRenaissanceman65 "It is Protestant because it isn't Catholic."??????? Claptrap! By that definition, the Russian Orthodox and Egyptian Antiochean churches are also 'Protestant', which is most assuredly untrue. I have read the 39 Articles - I've studied them in a comparative religions class. They make the Anglican Church distinct, but not Protestant. Jan Hus and Martin Luther would roll in their graves at calling the Anglicans "Protestant". That the 'Roman Catholic' church choses to be binary about being "catholic" or "protestant" doesn't make them right. Rome doesn't get to define what is or isn't in the Christian world.
@gillehrer28244 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter if the rites, ceremonies and doctrines are similar, the fact is that the rebellious "Catholic" church in London has been headed by the British monarch since 1534 because the overbearing British ruler wanted it so. Therefore, I'd like to ask: When will we have an English queen/king to make a new reconciliation between England and Rome (Vatican), as Queen Mary I did? Christ's church is unique and the Pope is the only only representative of Christ's church on Earth, it shouldn't have divisions with Orthodox, Protestants, Anglicans and Catholics in separate churches. AM I RIGHT or WRONG? xx== (gilberto lehrer from brazil)
@eatonjask4 жыл бұрын
As long as the Roman Catholic church sticks to unsupported formulations and claims such as " the Pope is the only representative of Christ's church on Earth," claims unsupported by the Gospels, then there will be divisions, into those who follow Jesus' teachings and hear Jesus speaking through the Bible and through his followers, and those who insist that 'a person' - the Bishop of Rome - is the only human God speaks to. In short, you are wrong. But freedom of religion and belief means you are entitled to your beliefs. Now, let's get back to celebrating Jesus' birth.
@jackmorrison73794 жыл бұрын
There are what Senor Lehrer, 200 million to 500 million fully lapsed Catholics of the Latin Rite worldwide? They worship possessions, lust, sport, gambling but never our blessed Lord. Yet you and people like you never seem to worry about their souls??? Instead you come here with your overbearing and arrogant triumphalism to prance about in your alleged exclusivity as if you know more than His Holiness who is never arrogant and always welcoming to us. Are you in full union with Rome or in one of those breakaway sects who do not recognize the current and last 3 Popes??? We are part of Christ's church. You have a psychological need for an exclusive club! So did the Pharisees!
@JeffAvants4 жыл бұрын
Well, you are certainly wrong not ask what the Roman Church's part was in this division. I tire of the arrogance of the Roman Church. If they want real revival and unity, then they will have to humble themselves, admit their faults, and seek their part in reconciliation. Also, you misunderstand the nature of a long running history between the papacy and England, before Henry VIII ever took the throne. His actions were merely the catalyst to a preexisting condition and course that had been set politically, theologically, morally, economically, ad nauseam, in actions by the Churches at Rome, England, and between English royal rulers and Rome and the Popes . If Rome could take one-tenth the responsiblity for that as it has for sexual sins and harm (and ALL churches and society are guilty of this too), then the healing and bonding in Christian unity could truly begin.
