Yes, I want carols in supermarkets too. I have pressed for this over the last few years. The `blindness` of UK leadership in trying to sanitize society so no religion is prominent will not work. Now it seems your society is in its post-Christian stage. You are warming yourselves on the embers of Western Civilization, and you're familiar with certain cultural symbols and traditions, such as Christmas. But it's empty, void of substance, because the core values of Christian Civilization are no longer present. Such as the relationship with God. So the embers will fade. The great vacuum created by the disappearance of Christianity will be filled by another culture. In that other cultural context there will be no room for Christmas. They will have other things instead. The reality you live in is not permanent and can easily change, especially customs void of true meaning.

I went to a C of E school as a boy 60 years ago and loved this hymn. As it was a junior school I didn't think too much about the meaning of all the words. If anyone had asked about Israel in lonely exile I would have guessed it was a reference to the Babylonian exile. I also thought about our separation from God's kingdom until the son of God came to rescue our lonely (exiled) hearts. I felt nothing but love, hope and peace having sung this and other hymns. The true meaning of Christmas (joy at the birth of our savior) needs to be revived and protected. Happy Christmas to one and all!

Also the greatest deception played on humanity by the Devil, is that he doesn't exist, therefore if he doesn't exist in people's minds then God does not exist and that means that sin is not real and we can all sin to our hearts content with no consequences. That , in a nutshell is how the devil deceives humanity. I am saved by the wonderful gift of God to humanity on Christmas day and ultimately Jesus Christ dying in agony on a cross to save me and all of us from sin and damnation. Have a blessed day. In fact I know that the rate of Muslim children at Christian schools and kindergartens is higher than at state schools because their parents don't want a secular/atheist upbringing for them.
