What a fantastic video, I really enjoyed the market with all the produce on display, more than the nativity scene at the start of the video. It was great seeing all the craftspeople with their diverse wares for sale. It really makes me want to revisit the island. The 'anona' translates as a custard apple or sugar apple in English. You have to wait for the fruit to ripen, initially it's hard to the touch but then it goes soft, but then eat it quickly before it deteriorates. They go off quickly. It's a soft white fruit, not too sweet. Madalena didn't translate the 'maracujá' which is passion fruit in English. I've met retired people in Portugal who showed me the 'pião' spinning toy they used to play with as children, which Madalena showed us. I've taken part in basket weaving classes and have a couple at home from these classes. Thinking of the stylish embroidery, if you want a quality and classy present to take back home, consider buying a ceramic piece from the Vista Alegre brand, a Portuguese company whose history stretches back to 1824 and is renowned for top quality and stylish plates and dinner service. There must be an upmarket store in Madeira that sells Vista Alegre. Lastly, you need to conscript Madalena into your Brazil task force (!), the planning committee that will decide and organise your next trip to Brazil, with Madalena taking centre stage as tour guide over there.

Thank you and Madelena did a marvellous job and has been so good throughout our stay at explaining her culture and traditions. She really has made this trip memorable and I have been lucky to be here with her. Her whole family have been very welcoming. I have tried anona since and it is very delicious. They also have the best tasting bananas ever from their farm! The baskets are lovely and the pottery but as you know I’m not buying anything anymore as the house is packed up and there is no point me having any more stuff to store away at this time. It’s been hard though as I love buying things to remind me of where I have been and could have spent a fortune on nativity figures! I have bought traditional Maderia cake to take back to the UK! Xxx
