I thought it might be more appropriate to have had a Portuguese Christmas song here. Do you know any? My three favourites are below (search KZbin for them): 1. 'Um Sonho de Natal', 'A Christmas Dream' by Ágata, with a lovely saxophone introduction. 2. 'É Natal', 'It's Christmas', by Marco Paulo, Zé Amaro, and Ágata, this time with a more religious vibe and beautiful lyrics. 3. 'O Natal Chegou', 'Christmas has arrived', by Márcio Pereira. Very jazzy, you'll need your disco shoes to dance around to this one!! Let us know which, if any, you like.

looks like little england with sunshine on the other side of the planet even if there is nothing to compare the 20,000km distance apart from all the poms there...all those convicts sent there and there's still zero legitimacy in any ownership claims...blatant theft occupation and theft of a continent if ever there was...not such glories of empire that one..haha....apart from that you seem like nice people having a good holiday

With Australia gone, done and dusted, now you must focus on your next long trip. Don't put your life on hold waiting for your house to sell! You can still travel while it's on the market. I already gave you some tips about Brazil in a year's time (since it's mostly southern hemisphere, so the seasons are reversed). How about a trip to the western desert states of the US late spring/early summer? Choose only two or three so as not to spend all your time on the road. Fly to a major city like Phoenix or Las Vegas, stay a couple of days there to soak it up and visit the parks and museums, then hire a car or campervan and hit the road. Lots of quaint little towns with their dollar stores, museums, second hand bookstores, restaurants and bars. Plus, the people are amazing! Plenty of hiking trails, canyons and national parks to explore, a bit like the wild outback in Australia. What are you waiting for?!

If your house was in Australia and you sold it, you'd never be able to get into another property again. The price of real estate is rising so rapidly, an area I was looking at has risen by 25% since January...Have you thought about swapping properties with a person in another country for a while? There are websites for this....
@RetireandTraveltheWorld
@RetireandTraveltheWorld 2 күн бұрын
Hello Pam! 25% increase! Wow! We certainly have not seen that this year in the UK but they are rising. The problem if I house swap is that if I do not live in my house for a certain amount of time and then sold it I would have a capital gains tax which I really want to avoid. If I was to return to the UK in the future I would buy a smaller place up North that are a lot cheaper than where I am now. At the moment I do not know where I will end up living! But I could look at house swaps if I am unable to sell to just get a few months in another country. That is a good idea as I am sure people would enjoy living in Stratford upon Avon. Xxx

Wow, a gruelling 45-minute video, I'd have preferred if you'd split it into 2 or even 3 shorter videos, as it'd be far easier to 'consume'. I'm also impressed by how much there is to see in Funchal. I only have a vague recollection of my trip there 25 years ago, some places in the video did seem familiar, like the cathedral. 'Excuse me' is 'com licença' in Portuguese, literally translating as 'with license', as effectively you're asking another person's permission. 'The bill' is 'a conta' in Portuguese. In Spanish it's 'la cuenta', a different word with different spelling and sound. I noticed a big age gap between Blue and Madalena, at least 10 years I'd guess. She looks even younger from a distance. You are so lucky having a Portuguese sister-in-law, if that was me, I'd be yakking at her all day to perfect my Portuguese! Today I got the first oranges off my trees. I don't eat them, I squeeze the juice. There are hundreds more hanging for the taking.

The clementines they grow here are delicious! Although lots of the fruit is fresh and so tasty! Surprising how much Portuguese I am starting to understand after just a week! @RetireandTraveltheWorld Not flattering to Blue! He looks very late fifties, even 60, Madalena a decade or more younger, but at the restaurant, seeing her face could put her into her early fifties. In the street, from a distance, she could pass for late thirties! Her long hair makes her younger I think.

@@RetireandTraveltheWorldYou'll have to get yourself to Brazil, with Madalena and Blue, for her to act as a guide since she speaks Portuguese. Far better than venturing there without any knowledge of Portuguese. Visit Rio and São Paulo, some of the colonial towns and beaches, and make sure you visit the Pantanal nature reserve in the west. Since it's in the southern hemisphere, you'd want to go when it's winter in the UK (i.e. around year end 2025/ early 2026) so that you get the warm sunny summer climate in Brazil. I think you'll like it even more than Australia. Don't forget who gave you this great tip!! 😀

I remember liking Albany when we visited, and going to those museums. I also like museums that are about people and their lives, generally from the 19th and 20th centuries. I'm not so interested in places like natural history museums, I've been to the Natural History Museum in London and I think the building itself is stunning. But inside I turn into the petulant bored child dragging my feet, asking regularly 'Can we go?'!
@RetireandTraveltheWorld

I did really like Albany and thu k it has plenty to offer whatever your interests are and a place I would definitely go back to. Sounds like we like the same things! History museums are my favourite and learning how people lived. Now the joys of going alone is if I do not like it, I go! 😂

I don't think I'd want to drive a manual car in a place with so many ups and downs. I had to drive one onto the ferry and was worried I'd have to do a hill start on the ramp. Luckily the car in front kept going.. So maybe you could investigate if Portugal is an economic place to retire or not, compared to the UK. I think there are videos on youtube of people buying very cheap but very rural property there.
@RetireandTraveltheWorld
@RetireandTraveltheWorld 4 күн бұрын
We have an automatic and it still rolls a bit! We were looking a bit at that yesterday and some houses on line. I will see what I can put together. In general so far I would say the cost of living, eating out and groceries is cheaper than the UK. There are some rural houses going very cheap however, they are usually old houses that need a complete renovation and in some cases completely rebuilding and talking with the family, getting permission to build can be difficult! I’ll see what else I can find out!
@perolagrande
@perolagrande 3 күн бұрын
@@RetireandTraveltheWorld That's a very large topic you could write a book on. There's a massive pay gap between the UK and Portugal, Portuguese minimum wage from January 2025 is just over £10,000 equivalent compared to nearly £24,000 in the UK. Similarly, average salaries are around 2.5x Portuguese levels in the UK. That means labour-intensive businesses (hotels, catering, builders) typically charge you less in Portugal, because their costs are far lower.
@RetireandTraveltheWorld
@RetireandTraveltheWorld 2 күн бұрын

@@RetireandTraveltheWorld I think that cheap house refurbishment content does really well. Only issue is things always cost more than you expect and it can be a false economy putting money into a cheaper house that would be better spent on a more valuable house.
@RetireandTraveltheWorld

I can't wait to see your videos on the farm and Madeira in general. What you're saying is true. Most people live their lives in a screaming mad rush and have no time for each other. That's no good. I say a rushed life can't be an enjoyable one. Portugal is a good country to enjoy what I call 'slow living'. Take the time to savour the moment and enjoy it, rather than rushing. There's always tomorrow.
