I'm assuming they were all in vacation mindset and weird sketches like this that usually would get tossed out or "cut for time" were left in. It didn't seem like anyone was really into the sketch except Kevin Hart, a lot seemed off with it. Same for quite a few of the other sketches this episode.

I can see what they were going for, the humor of taking the premise: him not being allowed to have a drink, all the way to being forced to make love to a giant teddy bear, especially if you consider driving an absurdist joke into the ground the comedy that gets you going. "Let's just see how we can build off of this premise and make it more and more absurd. The guy who is obedient to his stern wife, what if he just kept listening to her and making everyone uncomfortable." It was probably part of the goal of the sketch anyway. It just came across more depressing and sad than funny, because you felt humanity in Kevin's character, Gene, and wanted him to stand up for himself.
@danielsteel5251
@danielsteel5251 6 жыл бұрын
It's "more sad than funny" because people like that actually exist. And only sadists could be amused by that kind of scenario. The whole thing seems like it was Leslie's brainchild [1], informed by Kevin's knowledge about (i.e., experiences with) being a battered man [2], with finishing touches put on by Cecily Strong [3]. Because the writers collaborate, it's always hard to tell whose influence is more dominant in a particular piece. Altogether, there's no definite 'group voice' noticeable in SNL sketches. (This might be the way Lorne Michaels wants it. Who knows.) But every so often -- and I've only noticed it happening in the last few seasons -- there's a whiff of various individual writers' inner disgustingness. 1. Leslie Jones was in a similarly uncomfortable sketch with Chris Rock at some point. It seems that it was so unfunny that it was taken off KZbin. 2. Kevin Hart talked about that sort of thing (more than once) in his older stand-up acts. 3. Somehow Cecily Strong is always in these sketches where a male is being humiliated. In one of them she likely cowrote with Kyle Mooney (about Lewis & Clark, I think) the 'punchline' is that a man is anally raped. Not exactly mainstream humor. (Obviously there are twice as many people in the background working on these things; it's not only the people who eventually act them out.)

You weren't expecting unprofessional, grating, half-hearted attempts at comedy from an institution like SNL? SNL has not been synonymous with professional comedy for decades. It is now firm in its decision to enforce liberal tropes at all costs. Any attempts by SNL producers and performers to create comedy are a minor afterthought in light of this ongoing campaign.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that really uncomfortable about those skits. I'm a woman and a hardcore feminist by the way---just a note to anyone who thinks females abusing males is part of the "feminist agenda". Sorry to break it to you, but society's attitude of 'women abusing men is funny' is not reverse sexism but is a result of misogyny. Women being the helpless, subservient victims is "supposed to" be the default--which is a reason why there are more female victims of abuse in real life. However there are still plenty of men (probably more than we know) who experience abuse from their female or male partners. But since women are the ones who're "supposed to" be the abused partner, a male abuse victim isn't taken as seriously as he should be. According to a patriarchal society, this puts a male in the role that women are "supposed" to be in. A man being "like a woman" is seen as a joke. Because a patriarchal society treats women like they're inferior to men, so a man "lowered to an inferior status" is supposedly shameful
@MajiggerRose
@MajiggerRose 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, that got long, but I feel that comedians won't stop using abused men as punchlines since too many people have such a warped perception of feminism. What's 100x worse is that the sickos who abuse their male partners will likely never be brought to justice. There's already a depressingly low percentage of criminals getting jail time for sexually abusing /women/. It makes me sick to think how many scumbags abusing men have gotten away with it.

I love this sketch. Seeing this man, and the BOSS no less, show up to a Christmas party with a demanding grinch of a (perceivable) wife who shows absolutely no regard for the occasion or Gene just makes this absurdist excellence. There is no restraint on Crystal's part, and Gene's smiley reluctance as if to discreetly and embarrassedly dismiss Crystal's requests strikes me as hilarious. Crystal's unflinching bellowing of "Do it Gene" and the sympathetic and embarrassed reactions of his employees just carries this skit on to outstanding for me personally.

intalent I wish it was Michael Che and Cecily Strong on weekend update. Jost is just too.....white. he's funny, but he's not SNL funny. His best bits are always when he's reacting to the characters they have on. I feel like Cecily would do so much better.

As awkward as this sketch is … I appreciate Kevin Hart’s acting, it’s not his usual over the top performance. I believe Gene as a character, I don’t just see Kevin Hart .

Regardless of people's opinions on this skit and Leslie's performance we must truly appreciate the fact that at least SNL keeps its comments section open for criticism and debate thus truly being a supporter of free speech without disabling it you know.

That was awkwardly unfunny. I'm a feminist and this bothered me a lot. No humor...so just the situation itself was supposed to be funny? No. Even if a couple is into dominant and subordinate role play, which means it's (I suppose) not an abusive relationship, it's STILL not funny. Also I just realised that this is at least the second time Leslie Jones has been in a skit where the woman is abusive. STOP stereotyping black women as violent!! I'm so fed up with this shit!!

MsZephyra who gives a Fvck if you’re a feminist? With your corny over analytical psych degree 🙄🙄🙄. It’s not a funny skit, that’s all ..... your analogies are a reach .... lame

77tele Psych degree, lol! You're funny. The whole point of me mentioning I'm a feminist is because some people think feminism is only about women's rights. And as you all know this is a comment section so I'm allowed to make a comment, just like you! And SNL is supposed to be funny - another obvious point. Wishing you all a beautiful day!

MsZephyra yes but we don’t need the constant disclaimers of “I’m a feminist” ... nobody cares...... a HUMAN BEING knows right from wrong..... that’s like me saying “I’m a mechanic and I don’t condone hot dogs being sold at in and out burgers”...... like no one really cares about this feminist bs anymore........ just a bunch a crying women looking for attention...... I was raised in a household of women who are ALL educated and successful..... never heard the “feminist” chants one time..... but these days every woman wants us to know she’s a feminist....... no one cares........ the reason why I’m this direct about it is because it’s a the boy who cried wolf point...... nobody cares.......

I feel like there was a good premise here. I could see Kevin Hart having a movie called “Gene” with this character. Some kind of feel good comedy about a pushover man who learns to stand up for himself by the end of the movie. Gene’s journey to becoming a man with a backbone could be set up through various funny scenarios but paced in a way that has heart and character growth. “Coming this fall, it’s time to put your foot down and demand some respect! Kevin Hart is, Gene…in theaters everywhere November 1st…”

I’ve been trying not to say it for a while, but Leslie’s gotta go. I can’t remember a sketch that I’ve seen that she has timed her lines correctly or not mumbled up her words. Edit: Also I notice that they try to give her more commanding roles in sketches but they’re just roles that do not fit her comedic style.

Like many liberals in the public eye, Leslie Jones lashes out at criticism of her lack of ability with false allegations of discrimination. She has a job on mainstream television because she is black and a lesbian. SNL consistently strives to foist its liberal rhetoric upon the American public. Producing quality content often seems secondary to this goal. Leslie Jones is simply a cog in this agenda. Her ability as a performer is of minor importance relative to this campaign to reinforce the Obama-era mindset that mediocre is better than excellence, especially if you are a minority. Her lack of talent can never be truly addressed in most mainstream media and popular social media content because Leslie would falsely brand the comments as racist or homophobic. In doing so, she would trigger the collective liberal bullying machine that engages when those of certain demographics receive criticism, no matter the validity and nature of said criticism. As a country, we have to collectively push back against this liberal media trend. We cannot allow the inept to receive impunity and praise by default simply because of their minority status. They deserve to be praised and criticized based upon merit and ability, just like anyone else. In fact, it's essential to preserving the free speech culture that is uniquely our own. The media's tiptoeing around Obama's incompetence and blundering due to his racial identity is an example of how detrimental and pervasive this campaign can be. It is an anathema to free speech. It is a tragedy that more people are not collectively speaking out against these tendencies. Leslie Jones is inept, unintelligent, oblivious to her own short comings, and physically unappealing, much like Ellen. What sets Leslie apart is that she is angry too. It is not beneath her to be the willing faux messiah for whom the liberal media will construe criticism for bigotry, for whom the liberal media will bully and endlessly lie in an effort to destroy those who would be so bold as to address her gross lack of talent.
