In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace - and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." Orson Welles improvising in "The Third Man". @@shaunsaega what do you mean “so called “modern age””? It is modern. There’s nothing not modern about the modern age. It’s as modern as you can get. What’s so called about it? I'm a secular Jew and I love this stuff. It is so like the colors in the paintings-rich and textured. There's Jewish music that is much like this Christmas music. After all, the Moors were in Spain for centuries. I do think, however that this music was the orgy of consumerism as it was back in those days. It was commissioned by the wealthier members of the community and court. The musicians were highly trained. I don't think we can fool ourselves to feel that our commercialism is crass while theirs was cultured. It was, but how did the poor folk with no education feel about it? They had their music back then, too and it was boisterous and joyous and you could dance to it. It's all good. Happy holidays.

Susan Moran is right; there was always conspicuous consumption around Christmas -- partly because they HAD to. It was partly the nature of the agricultural cycle. Some livestock weren't going to survive the winter anyway. As for attacking modern "consumerism", this is an attack on modern capitalism and the beneficial effects of the industrial revolution. To attack consumerism is to attack people's livelihoods (including even sweatshop workers and child laborers of the Third World). ...And your own kids (and the kids in your extended family), the younger ones don't have money of their own. They are certainly happy to receive toys and other items they otherwise would not get unless given to them by some adult. ...In any event, these aren't "Christmas songs". I don't even think Christmas was a very important holiday until the modern age -- when capitalism enabled the masses to enjoy all of the material wealth it created. Easter was always the most important and meaningful day on the Christian calendar, wasn't it?

There comes a point in ones life when the Yuletide becomes more about family and less about consumerism. Each passing Yuletide I have trouble thinking about what I want for as gifts because I simply do not care about material goods in that way anymore. It partly has to do with growing up and developing cynicism in response to a sacred feast turning into consumerism. In a way, I feel guilty and disgusted for not practicing the Yuletide like how my forefathers did, and the gifts I receive are nice, but somehow it all feels misguided.

I'm not catholic and when you say medieval church music were talking exclusively catholic music....so does anyone know how similar today's Christmas masses etc would compare to say...a random year of 1421? I'd love to see an accurate recreation. And of course what did the families do before or after a service. What did they eat.
@susanmoran52264 жыл бұрын
Families fasted before mass. Afterward if they could afford it, they had meat, bread , vegetables and ale. A Catholic mass today as changed beyond recognition. And is more like a simplified Lutheran service of Holy Communion. There are still churches around the world that keep to the old Latin High Mass . There is one in my town. And it is a well attended church. Many people say the new Mass as not got the awe and wonder of the old High Mass. On the twelve days of Christmas, the festivities did not end on Christmas day that was the beginning . The Great Halls of the gentry would open up for the general public for community festivities. Much of the music on this channel is of that kind. Most would not be sung in church. But at the parties afterwards. Where there would also be dancing, story telling acting and other performances. Christmas was a rest period from work and the work was hard. So, it was a brief period of merry making. After Ephithany the last day of Christmas the work started again. Most certainly none of the songs sang in German here would have been sung in church, it was all in Latin . I personally prefer the German songs .
@marlonmunguia1634 жыл бұрын
It is somewhat similar. After the changes of Vatican II, the mass has changed a lot. It would of been said in latin everywhere in the west. Here is an average 15th century mass: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4W2e2qCpr9_j7M
