It definitely was. Compare that BBC '96 line up to this year. You've got the premier of a major blockbuster movie followed by two Christmas special episodes from two of the most beloved British sitcoms of all time. And both of those episodes are classics, amongst the best either show ever put out. The Dibley one from that year is still repeated most Christmases, and is usually still the best thing the BBC shows over the entire Christmas period. This Christmas day on BBC? Total dross. There's no comparison.

Couldn't wait for our parents to buy the xmas double (2 week) editions of the 'radio times' and 'tv times when I'd spend ages checking out what I wanted to see over the festive period. By the 90's the 'best' had gone and tv was in decline on the main stream channels. It's true to say that most people's viewing habits have changed a lot in the last 10 or so years. Streaming services and the ability to watch what you want whenever you want it, has seen to that. Which means a lot of the occasion of what was once Christmas has been lost. Before, you went out of your way to watch the premiere movie shown after the Queen's speech, simply because it was the only realistic way of doing so. The same goes for other shows, particularly the Christmas specials, in that it was all part and parcel of what Christmas was all about, having opened your presents, filled up with food and drink and settled down to vegetate in front of the telly as a family. Now, everyone has their own personal devices to watch whatever they like, whenever they like, and as such have become far more insular when it comes to watching media of their choosing. The idea of watching something together in the same space at a set time seems to be a lost idea. There seemed to be more closeness and connection with everyone, back then. As for the content; there's always been the choice to either take it or leave it, but back then, there wasn't much else to do other than involve yourself in some way with whatever presents you were given, (which depended a lot on what they were, of course.) Now, people have too much choice in that they can do anything they like on an individualistic level that doesn't have to involve other family members, which might be alright for some, but it does kind of go against the whole ethos of Christmas being a time for families getting together.

I remember my mother saying how great Christmas day tv was and as a kid growing up in the 70's I agreed . When my parents passed away I went into the loft to clean out and I came across the Christmas decorations. My mam had wrapped the baubles in old newspapers going back to the late 60's . The telly page was used quite a bit . Looking at the line up (Some I didn't know because of my age) I saw most of the tv was terrible . The highlights were the classic films of the time and Morecombe and Wise . You remember the good stuff and forget the dross . Christmas tv has always been a mixed bag of highs and lows

This year I have complete boxed sets of things that I have yet to see. I could watch it non stop for several days if I want to, but I don't. I'll also watch stuff on my Firestick, some of the films that I have, reading Kindle books, and I will listen to a lot of music. The BBC will die because of changes to the viewing landscape. The miniaturisation and digitisation of media signal the end of the BBC. Miniaturisation ended the Radio licence (no pun intended), and it will and the BBC as a whole.

As much as we can laugh at the Noel Edmonds stuff now, how can people not appreciate that is what Christmas is meant to be. Getting together and having a laugh. Not buying the biggest and most expensive present. Sitting kids quietly in front of endless movies while you get drunk. Spent time the kids, or friends, the dog, anyone. Tomorrow BBC 1 has 4 and a half hours of movies back to back, starting at 11:15. Not even Christmas movies. Then there's Strictly, Doctor Who, generic and other generic shows that are played every day. Where's the Christmas? The BBC clearly hate Christmas and want to phase it out.

Hi Chilli, the 1970s BBC Christmas viewing was second to none. I am sorry you were not around then. People in their 60s now would remember, The Christmas Morecambe and Wise, Dick Emery Christmas Show; both shows brought much cheer, Disney-time (until itv bought the rights), a proper Dr Who Christmas special, decent films without adverts, a Top of the Pops Christmas special ( when there were classics in the charts). BBC Christmas telly in the 70s was a cut above there rest of the year. No repeats. ITV matched the quality to earn their share of the Christmas ratings for revenue. Sometime in the 80s, the BBC seemed to lose their knicker elastic for producing quality Christmas entertainment. Now, it is all around their ankles.

BBC Tv hasn’t been any good since the 80’s. Glad I don’t pay for it anymore.

I don't know what crap was on regular telly on Christmas day because I only have Netflix. Didn't even watch our unwanted King's speech.

Well done on this, you say it how it definitely is! The soaps are total rubbish now with tragedies and other stories just for viewing figures, the old real stories are long gone. Dr Who has gone all tick box and few of us watch now, which is sad as it was a great favourite among the kids especially, but that is how so much of UK broadcasting is going. Keep up the good work!

Not having watched TV for over 12 years, I couldn't possibly comment on whether TV was better in the dim, distance past. I'd wager it was though 🤣

It’s Christmas Day and I know what I’ll be watching for many hours. It’s my favourite programme. It’s on at 40 degrees and spins out at 1400 revs, its my Washing Machine. Better than any TV programme. 😂😂😂

From what I've heard, EastEnders has increased its misandry content hugely this Christmas to give wallies a thrill. I never liked having the telly on at Christmas TBH, even as a kid/teen in the 60s/70s. I know I'm a tiny minority though!

Yes, it WAS better in the 70's and 80's up into the mid 90's . Auntie BEEB used to put effort into big shows , Big Comedy shows and Christmas specials . Only Fools and Horses was something to really look forward to weeks in advance as you KNEW it would be good . Looking through this years listings and it is DIRE . NOTHING to shout about . Television will die if TV companies don't start producing top quality programmes again. As you said Jon, BBC rake in £3.6BN annually and they are making cutbacks. Its the old pay more for less routine that corporations are adopting and it is now starting to show .

Being of similar age to you, I think that BBC line up back in '96 was pretty good. Unless you had Sky or cable, which we didn’t, then you only had the 4 channels (5 started in '97). Top of the Pops was a must-watch for me and mum, which I miss now that it’s gone for sentimental reasons, and even Jurassic Park and two great comedies I would have loved that. Way too much choice nowadays with anything on tap you want to watch, making the BBC is pretty irrelevant now.

It's surprising the amount of cartoons and kids shows BB1 broadcast on Christmas morning in the 96 listings. Been a long time admittedly since I was a kid but the last thing I was interested in doing on Christmas day as a kid was watching TV. Genuinely the only Christmas TV I remember being remotely interested in watching was the big blockbuster movie being broadcast that year, your Star Wars trilogy, Indie movie etc.

I remember that the TV may have been on, as a kid growing up, but it wasn't really given any attention. It was more background noise out of habit of just having the TV on. As kids, we were far more preoccupied with our presents until lunchtime, and once that was over, only then did the TV come into play. Generally, though, most of the shows weren't very memorable until the afternoon movie, once the Queen's speech was out of the way. Mind you, I'm old enough to remember when you didn't get a afternoon movie, but instead a circus, of all things. The, 'big movie', didn't usually come on into the early evening, and even then it was something like, 'The Wizard of Oz', which we'd already seen a million times before. The proper Christmas shows didn't come on until around 7 or 8 o'clock, and were something like Christmas editions of popular sitcoms or variety shows like Morecombe & Wise.
