It was far more family orientated and fun. Christmas TV today is... nothing. It's no different than any other day. As much as we can laugh at the Noel Edmonds stuff now, how can people not appreciate that is what Christmas is meant to be. Getting together and having a laugh. Not buying the biggest and most expensive present. Sitting kids quietly in front of endless movies while you get drunk. Spent time the kids, or friends, the dog, anyone. Tomorrow BBC 1 has 4 and a half hours of movies back to back, starting at 11:15. Not even Christmas movies. Then there's Strictly, Doctor Who, generic and other generic shows that are played every day. Where's the Christmas? The BBC clearly hate Christmas and want to phase it out.

Hi, For me the BBC in the 90's was better. Not necessarily any particular program but the fact that there were not the number of Ads, yes I know there are no ads on the BBC except there are ads for the upcoming shows. BBC programs seem to be timed to allow for the ads there will be on Dave or US TV. At least the ads on ITV are/were creative.

It definitely was. Compare that BBC '96 line up to this year. You've got the premier of a major blockbuster movie followed by two Christmas special episodes from two of the most beloved British sitcoms of all time. And both of those episodes are classics, amongst the best either show ever put out. The Dibley one from that year is still repeated most Christmases, and is usually still the best thing the BBC shows over the entire Christmas period. This Christmas day on BBC? Total dross. There's no comparison.

It's true to say that most people's viewing habits have changed a lot in the last 10 or so years. Streaming services and the ability to watch what you want whenever you want it, has seen to that. Which means a lot of the occasion of what was once Christmas has been lost. Before, you went out of your way to watch the premiere movie shown after the Queen's speech, simply because it was the only realistic way of doing so. The same goes for other shows, particularly the Christmas specials, in that it was all part and parcel of what Christmas was all about, having opened your presents, filled up with food and drink and settled down to vegetate in front of the telly as a family. Now, everyone has their own personal devices to watch whatever they like, whenever they like, and as such have become far more insular when it comes to watching media of their choosing. The idea of watching something together in the same space at a set time seems to be a lost idea. There seemed to be more closeness and connection with everyone, back then. As for the content; there's always been the choice to either take it or leave it, but back then, there wasn't much else to do other than involve yourself in some way with whatever presents you were given, (which depended a lot on what they were, of course.) Now, people have too much choice in that they can do anything they like on an individualistic level that doesn't have to involve other family members, which might be alright for some, but it does kind of go against the whole ethos of Christmas being a time for families getting together.

Couldn't wait for our parents to buy the xmas double (2 week) editions of the 'radio times' and 'tv times when I'd spend ages checking out what I wanted to see over the festive period. By the 90's the 'best' had gone and tv was in decline on the main stream channels. Maybe I am biased but in '96 they had wizard of oz on at a time when adults and kids are likely to watch tv, the premier of one of the biggest films of the decade and one of the best episodes of one of the best shows ever made. This year its a poor remake of cinderella which isnt liked by anyone but the critics, Doctor Who which is currently so disliked it has some of the worst viewing figures ever, Mrs Browns boys - less said the better and the best thing on all day is toy story 4 which is a movie made 5 years ago and has already been seen by everyone. I am not going to claim everything in '96 was amazing but its clearly a better line up.

I'll also watch stuff on my Firestick, some of the films that I have, reading Kindle books, and I will listen to a lot of music. The BBC will die because of changes to the viewing landscape. The miniaturisation and digitisation of media signal the end of the BBC. Miniaturisation ended the Radio licence (no pun intended), and it will and the BBC as a whole.

When my parents passed away I went into the loft to clean out and I came across the Christmas decorations. My mam had wrapped the baubles in old newspapers going back to the late 60's . The telly page was used quite a bit . Looking at the line up (Some I didn't know because of my age) I saw most of the tv was terrible . The highlights were the classic films of the time and Morecombe and Wise . You remember the good stuff and forget the dross . Christmas tv has always been a mixed bag of highs and lows

It is 'rose tinted glasses'.. There was no competition from the internet. Showing the 1939 movie 'the Wizard of Oz' is a giveaway, it was past the 50 year royalties point meaning it cost the beeb sfa or a token payment at most.. WHO IS GOING TO WATCH A 57 yr old movie in the middle of xmas day? It doesnt even appeal to children unless they are under 7. How could they justify the licence fee (in '96) with this GARBAGE? They did not try to justify it, they did not give a fxkc cos most people had to just 'pay up' and did not think about it. Like buying a tax disc for the car windscreen. The beebs output was pitiful then on Xmas day, now it is pitiful 24/7, 365 days a year. They are still relying on 'inertia' against information movement but at least once a fortnight I educate somebody about the actual legalities of watching content on a screen. The BBC just shrugged at criticism then, they just shrug now. But now is different and they havent realised things have changed_ As they exist today, They are doomed.

You talk about who wants to watch the news on Christmas and I agree but my parents love the news and their soaps. Basically they like the most depressing things on telly

Far better when you had the the cream of comedy shows doing Christmas specials with real stars, now it's third rate so called celebrities.

Being of similar age to you, I think that BBC line up back in '96 was pretty good. Unless you had Sky or cable, which we didn’t, then you only had the 4 channels (5 started in '97). Top of the Pops was a must-watch for me and mum, which I miss now that it’s gone for sentimental reasons, and even Jurassic Park and two great comedies I would have loved that. Way too much choice nowadays with anything on tap you want to watch, making the BBC is pretty irrelevant now.

Looking back, most of the TV was crap back then too. With a couple of exceptions.

Just on the 1986 there was no streaming or many tv channels, so in context there wasn't really much to watch

Who didn’t love Clark’s Ghost Stories for Christmas? Alf getting a cake on his head after telling Mrs Hollingbury she was getting bolshy for refusing to say obey in her wedding vows 🤣 Del and Rodney as Batman and Robin 😂 Definitely better then

It’s Christmas Day and I know what I’ll be watching for many hours. It’s my favourite programme. It’s on at 40 degrees and spins out at 1400 revs, its my Washing Machine. Better than any TV programme. 😂😂😂

On Christmas day the film is East is East, a story about Muslims. Says it all, insulted, divided and ruled by the few. Thank you, i asked you for this. It’s calling programming, and so it is, just propagating the views of the few. It’s even worse than I thought. Looking forwards to another year of desperate begging letters. Is the Scottish Heather Club showing on New Years Eve to complete it all? They lost me for life. You should compare it to what was on in the sixties, horror play on Christmas eve, Beatles film etc. Now it’s stale Morecambe and Wised and Mrs Brown’s boys, Eastenders and a gayed up James Bond for life, nein danke! It’s mirrored the decline of the Viz comic, what happened to that? If it’s still going it ain’t gonna be bought by me either, modern life is rubbish..

Yes, it WAS better in the 70's and 80's up into the mid 90's . Auntie BEEB used to put effort into big shows , Big Comedy shows and Christmas specials . Only Fools and Horses was something to really look forward to weeks in advance as you KNEW it would be good . Looking through this years listings and it is DIRE . NOTHING to shout about . Television will die if TV companies don't start producing top quality programmes again. As you said Jon, BBC rake in £3.6BN annually and they are making cutbacks. Its the old pay more for less routine that corporations are adopting and it is now starting to show .

Christmas day back in the 70's. No such thing as a Video. The Christmas film, generally a Bond film. You wouldn't have seen it unless you saw it in the cinema. TV meant something. Not anymore. Sad but true.
