Love seeing all your antiques. Why is the cloth tied on the banister?

Thank you! We believe the banister was an addition to the house...by addition probably the 1850's. The joint isn't that great where they are attached and I read once the lady of the house would do a repair or cover up with cloth...makes a conversation piece during a farm tour. Good eyes!
