Under Coppa law I have to disclaim this is not for kids. Included in this movie is a biblical child with a drum, and his house is burnt down. It could cause nightmares for children that are scared of everything. Also, his sheep is killed tragically in a cart, prompting the need for road safety in children. Unfortunately it still causes nightmares. It also promotes kidnapping, exploitation of children, exploitation of animals, as well as potential fraud.

Kids today do not know the anticipation and excitement when these Christmas shows came on. I remember my mom fixing popcorn and my brothers and sister watched this. I’m 58 years old and I continue to watch it faithfully each year❤

This classic needs to be restored and preserved. Among the Christmas classics, this one is mostly forgotten about. The beautiful soundtrack of the Vienna Boys Choir has survived the test of time, but the Little Drummer Boy program hasn't and has been forgotten and lost to obscurity.

I’m glad to see at the tender age of 60 that I’m not the only one who cried when they first saw this Rankin & Bass production. I was 4 years old when it came out in December of 1968. I was watching it in the den of the house I grew up in in a console TV ( that was a TV that was built into a piece of furniture for all you young folk ). I watched quietly. Then when it was over I got up and just as quietly walked out of the den into our living room which was a more formal place than the den designed for guests. There was a couch there as well and I sat down on that and I began to cry. I guess my mom eventually heard me and came to see what was the matter. I eventually told her that Baba died….why did he have to die? And mom hugged me and said “Didn’t you see that he came back to life?” I told her yes but it was still such a traumatic thing to see Baba run over by the cart driven by the Roman Centurion. I guess I equated Baba as being Aaron’s version of a pet dog. And my best and only friend at 4 years of age was my dog Joe, an English Setter. I couldn’t stand to think of Joe being injured like Baba. So the tears flowed: Now, 56 years later I cry seeing this again because I understand the symbolism behind the story. Just as Jesus was crucified by the Romans and also as the sacrificial Lamb of God for the sins of not just His people but for the whole world so too was Baba, the little lamb, run over by a Roman, never knowing what he had just done, which reminds us now of Jesus’s words from the Cross, “Forgive them Father, for they no not what they do.” And maybe, just maybe, that was what REALLY animated me all those decades ago. My child-like mind could only equate it to my beloved companion, my best friend, the family dog, Joe. Because the Spirit of God meets us where we are physically and mentally at any given time. Then as we grow older, acquiring more knowledge and wisdom along the way, when we are confronted again with something like this show we now understand the deeper meaning behind it. That is what we call…. ”revelation”.

Every year, this was -the- show I looked forward to, even knowing what would happen to Baba. And then --we grow up. The rich symbolism, if allowed to germinate, becomes a reality intertwined into the fabric of our lives. Believing in that very real, "Blessed Hope" we have in our adult lives. As you said perfectly, Revelation. All the sad times, the happy times, the gains, the losses, brought to Him. It changes everything, doesn't it? He changes everything. I remember I first saw this in my kindergarten class and it was like I had an epiphany. I then watched it every year and I vividly remember one particular year when I was about 12, at the end when he plays the drum for baby Jesus I started profusely crying. Each time I watch this one I cry. There is such an underlying religious tone to this one. The ending song with the choir also makes me even more emotional. One of my all time favs.

It will always be my favorite of all the Christmas videos… it says volumes on what Christmas means and is all about….LOVE and Jesus’ BIRTH. I'm a 66 year old lady and I love watching this movie. I remember telling my mother: " Mom the little drummer boy " movie will play tonight, and she would get so excited and said: ok will watch it tonight " Mom and dad are gone now, but those memories will live on this me. I miss Mom and dad but every time I watch this movie I think of them. Those are the things that mean a lot to a child and a young person. This is the Holiday Season. Holy Day being shortened to Holiday. December 6th is saint day of Saint Nicholas, Saint Nicholas of Myra, the true Santa Claus, where his name changed from country to country as his reputation spread. Santa being Spanish for Saint. A curious bit of trivia. There is a DIRECT connection with “The Little Drummer Boy” and a MASH episode from December of 1974. Ted Eccles who was a child actor in the 60’s was the voice of the Little Drummer Boy named Aaron. 6 years after The Little Drummer Boy, Ted Eccles played Private Chapman in this December 1974 episode of MASH called “Private Charles Lamb”. It revolved around two story arcs. One involving Ted Eccles character Private Chapman who Hawkeye and Trapper John discovered had shot himself in order to get sent back home. The other involved a Greek combat unit who were at the 4077th during the Easter Holiday season. Of course, the Greeks love lamb. And it was the Easter season. So guess what was on the menu? However, Radar was having none of it. So the gang devised a mad-cap scheme to save the lamb from being served for dinner and secretly got it flown back to the States to live on Radar’s family farm. And although the episode was set during Easter it was actually first aired on December 31, 1974 right after Christmas. I wasn’t watching MASH that early on so I don’t know if during the Christmas season of 1974 that one could have seen Ted Eccles as Aaron in the Ltittle Drummer Boy and then just a couple of weeks later see him again as Private Chapman on a MASH episode involving a lamb about to be eaten as part of a Greek Easter meal but there you go, The Little Drummer Boy and Baba meet again….in South Korea !

A classic Rankin/Bass holiday special! Teddy Eccles voices the title character, with narration by legendary actress Greer Garson and Jose Ferrer as the voice of Ben. The finale is very moving, with the Baby Jesus(the Lamb of God) healing Baba(Aaron's pet lamb) of his injuries.
