*CHRISTOCENTRIC MEAL* *DR ABEL DAMINA* *WEDNESDAY APRIL 13, 2022* *WHAT IS THE SEAL OF THE SPIRIT?* *The indwelling of the spirit is explained as having a bearing on an important reality of the believer in Christ. This is described as a seal, the earnest of the spirit.* Paul in his epistle to the Ephesians mentioned it twice. Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Observe from the above verse that he first pointed to how that they heard the gospel and believed; this is salvation. As a result of this (or in this), he then says that they were sealed with that Holy spirit of promise. The word “sealed” used here by Paul implies a security or a preservation. Hence the term “sealed” further buttresses what had been earlier explained about the indwelling of the spirit as explained by “residence” and “permanence”. Hence, the spirit lives in the believer forever! The second use of that word by Paul is seen in Ephesians 4. Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. The word “grieve” implies to annoy, and it is explained in the fact that what is been referred to is of a contrary sort. However, note that he used the same word “sealed” that he had used in chapter 1. Here, he says we have been sealed by the Holy spirit unto the day of redemption, while in Ephesians 1:13, he said “sealed with the Holy spirit of promise”. We will see the import of the use of the phrase “unto the day of redemption” and what it implies subsequently. A similar word was used by Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians: 2nd Corinthians 5:5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. The word “earnest” implies a pledge or advance security of a payment. In the context of 2nd Corinthians 5 and also in 2nd Corinthians 4, Paul had been discussing the state of the physical body (the outward man) which he described as perishing, mortal and distinct from the inward man: 2nd Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of [this] tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Vs 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: Vs 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. Vs 4 For we that are in [this] tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. The term “earthly house” in verse 1 was in description of the outward man which he had been describing in Chapter 4: (2nd Corinthians 4:14-18) He clearly distinguished the outward man from the inward man in: Verse 16: the outward man which perishes and the inward man which is renewed day by day. Verse 17: the light affliction which is but for a moment and the far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Verse 18: the things which are seen (which are temporal) and the things which are not seen (which are eternal). Now to Chapter 5: The earthly house which was to be dissolved (which perishes, is mortal, temporal) is in reference to the outward man, explaining the physical body in its present state. In verse 4, he then refers to the groaning in this tabernacle, that we be not unclothed, but clothe upon, that mortality be swallowed up of life. Hence in verse 5 when he mentions how that we have been given the earnest of the spirit, it was to effect that change in the physical body which is referred to as the redemption of the body: CONFESSION: The spirit lives in me. I look at the inward man, that which is renewed day by day, which is eternal, I know that the outward man which will be changed by the spirit in me.
