Thank you for this is a very inspirational tutorial. I'm just gonna have to find out how to modify this. Hollow head and spiky vertical edge multicolor spikes.

A lot more interesting than watching paint dry. ;) As with most of these tutorials, I try to figure out how I would achive this effect. My own idea was identical as far as the 3D-print effect went. I just don't have enough understanding of the Animation Nodes yet, and it was extremely interesting to see how much you can achive with so little effort... if you know what you do. I have to watch it again, multiple times, and read up some references to understand what you were doing. But that is exactly the reason why I appreciate these tuts so much. Regardless of what you already know, there's always something to learn, even if it is only that you still have to learn a lot more. Thank you very much for this video!

Great tutorial, thanks! I have a problem with rendering this animation so I was wondering if you can help me, maybe you had the same problem. The animation works perfect in 3D viewport but the render result is static laser beams. Also, Blender always crashed when I tried to bake particles? I've tried different settings, GPU, CPU, eevee/cycles,...don't know if it's due to some glitch in Blender or I should do something in my setting? I was reluctant to install 2.8 as I expected problems but so far I was able to overcome them all but this one. I would really love to have this work properly so if someone had the same issue and found the answer please share with me, it would be greatly appreciated :-).

Congratulations... besides doing the steps, I like you explain why you were doing which steps... so in my end it is not only doing things but not understanding why. I had problem to install the Animation Node, and the troubleshooting of this doc was very useful animation-nodes-manual.readthedocs.io/en/latest/user_guide/install/install.html. In my case what solved was the tip: "Windows users may encounter errors due to missing runtimes or DLL load failures, in that case, try installing vc_redist.x64." Thanks and congratulations!

This is amazingly powerful, but the bug about the iterator not actually iterating through particles during a render is really quite crippling. View port rendering is good for play, but you can't integrate this amazing technique into a proper animation without a normal render. Hope this gets resolved soon.

Hi Chris .. I enjoyed this tut of yours too .. you have a really clear way of explaining things .. thank you. One question: it won't render. Im not a noob, all is turned on the render and im used to render farm and complex scenes .. the boolean just renders flat. Is it the modifier not being enabled in render maybe? The animation looks great onscreen .. any ideas please?

Rendering AN is sometimes really glitchy and you have to resort to viewport rendering or scripted rendering (see chrisp.zone) ... I have never rendered an AN animation on a render farm 🤔

@@chrisprenn Re Farm 4 PCs we used to use Max with Backburner but the last months completely switched to Blender and also got the farm working (most of the time) too. Your 'Beam me up!' tut did render on the farm (4 connected PC's) with AN installed on each. 'Sci-Fi laser' didn't render at all same set-up. Its interesting to try new things and find workarounds. Thank you for your insightful explanations and responses to your subscribers. Cheers.

I rescaled and repositioned the second cube as you described but when I went back into animation, the second cube lost the position I moved it to and jumped to the middle of my first cube instead..(rather than showing the effect at 6:50) of your clip... please advise! thanks!

Hi Chris very good tutorial, I have a question , I follow all the process but at the end when I render this animation the rays keep static on the last position, I mean if I leave or stop the animation on the frame 50 all the frames from the 1 at the 150 have the rays on the same position was on the frame 50, but if I render manually frame by frame and save the resultanting render image the animation is correct the rays follow the particules ( sorry I don´t speak english ). Any clue what can be wrong? I try with diferent configurations on the Node Tree Tools Activating and disactivating Auto Execute, Always, etc... for now the animation only works fine on the viewport not on the final render process.

Thank you once again Chris. Another excellent tutorial My effort is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqWyp2enZ9iEgNU. It was a real pain to get it to render but I got there in the end. Some time ago I produced a series of B&W images for a resin printer. I seem to recall using the shrinkwrap modifier. It worked fine and was very fast as a slicer also very accurate. Thanks again. Great tutorials and one I've been waiting for since I saw your demo.

@@chrisprenn nodes are not suit me. I can understand shader graph (because shaders have such a structure) but when you need to use loops and other complex operations, according to me nodes are not clear for this, because just plain code is more readable and I can write it faster

I used a still character model and as one would expect, the animation nodes crapped out. They could not handle it. In a 270 frame animation, frame 113 onward randombly began displaying either cube and blocking the model, each time for only one frame. I will try to duplicate this logic via 3.0 geometry nodes. All that's needed is a curve from the particle object to a fixed point. Get these klunky unreliable animation nodes out of the picture.
