“And tho Captain Kirk isn’t real, is he not in history?” Most fire bar of the whole battle!
@accywacky26994 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, Kirk and the star trek original show had profound impacts on society back then... It was I believe one of if not the very first show where you'd find a black person, a woman no less, working alongside several other explicit ethnic and national groups (such as, gasp, Sovjetski Russians!) and other more implied diversity (back when this word actually meant something besides hypocrisy) all working together on what was effectively a military ship bridge, party of an idealistic, Optimistic image of what human society could be like in a more enlightened and openminded age. It's had its share of inspiring ideas that one day came to be realized with technological innovations, while most phones these days are of the brick or solid plate style... Pretty safe to say any kid who's owned an old flip-style phone used it at least once to pretend it was a communicator or a tricorder. Calling Kirk and by extension the show a "fictional stain" just cements the fact that the actual Columbus was a pretty damn horrible human being by most, let alone modern standards though I am not entirely sure if that's on purpose. Either way this was indeed The bar, bar none.

The cadet can choose to leave and the ship will be destroyed, or attempt to battle and help but their own ship will eventually fall in the battle. Also, Kirk is the only person that beat the test and saved both ships.

It kinda bothers me that people write Columbus off just because there we inhabitants there already. If an astronomer decerned a planet we had never seen before, and found new life there, we would herald it as groundbreaking and amazing. The point is to bring knowledge to a group that didn't have it. In that time, people had no way of knowing what was across the ocean or if there even was anything there at all, so Columbus confirming the existence of another contanent and bring back that knowledge was a big deal. This may seem overly serious and i apologise, i simply dislike how bad of a reputation Columbus gets and how ithas become common to believe that he accomplished nothing of note.

I grew up sheltered, middle class white and was not exposed to rap too much and subscribed to the jokes about rap not being a good genre. I didn't find it 'jarring' on the first listen at all, I suspect it's not for anyone who's musical - it's syncopation, that's all, more technical and interesting than most of the raps you hear. And Shatner's exact cadence and intonation patterns , how else could it have been done? It's probably the most perfect musically-integrated impression the channel has done. I remember when it dropped comments from the musically-simple how it was bad rapping or off-beat - he's not off-beat he's just SILENT on the beat a lot, there's a difference

It was second season, right? They had more resources available to them, so the video quality had gone up, but they were also starting to ramp up production, and their writing wasn't quite as polished as it is today. I think this one could have used another few weeks of workshopping. But the real problem is that both performances were hampered by the (funny, and arguably necessary) caricatured impressions. Hearing someone trying to rap like Shatner singing "Rocket Man" is undoubtedly hilarious, but it doesn't make for a great rap battle, in the traditional sense!

Columbus is also a vastly misunderstood historical character, like people claiming he thought the earth was alot smaller than it actually was, which he didnt, it was just believed at the time (due to marco polo) even by very skilled cartogrophers that Asia was alot bigger than it was, he wasnt aiming to go straight to india, but he theorized there were islands of the cost of "shipangu" aka japan, which there are but it wasnt known, so when he landed in hispanola he didnt think he landed in india but in the indies, close to japan.

I just feel that Kirk's bar about Columbus not being an explorer what a miss, not a hit, because every explorer discover worlds that are already inhabited. Every single world Kirk went to was already inhabited. Exploring isn't about whether it is inhabited or not, it is whether or not the people you represent know about that world yet or not. An explorer can set out to search for civilizations that already exists, and trade routes, and still be an explorer, and that is what Columbus did. So I am not having that one. I do not feel it was a good hit or punch at all. It failed. Miserably. He was spot on though with the follow-up India bar. - You didn't give it a DD because of the rap style, but it shouldn't be a DD in anyway.

Star trek made history several times. First scripted interracial kiss on TV. Diverse cast well ahead of its time. A positive view of the future with a Russian character on TV...at the hight of the cold War with Russia. It also gave young people of the time inspiration to go into stem fields and make many of the technologies that were fiction at the time of the show. To call the show groundbreaking is so understated as to almost be insulting. It's earned its place in history many times over.

Christopher Columbus influenced centuries of human history. In fact, the first scripted interracial kiss on tv can even be tied back to Columbus. If there was no new world, there's no colonization. If there's no colonization, there's no slavery. If there's no slavery, there's no racial discrimination. And if there's no racial discrimination, there's no scripted first interracial kiss on Star Trek. Obviously just a tad oversimplified but I think you can see my point. Centuries of history, started by Columbus being a shitty mathematician, eventually resulted in Star Trek.

Well, pretty soon you'll have watched all of Season 1. I again suggest continuing your Reactions from Season to Season in order. You'll have much less "this one is much better than the other" usually because the more recent one will be the better one. You'll see more progression and evolution, which you have slightly noticed, but forget from time to time because you're constantly jumping from Season to Season. Curve your expectations based on Season as opposed to ERB as a whole. Like you can't fairly compare Season 1 ERB to Season 3...they're almost 2 different things at this point. Season 1 was the Beta Test, and they continued to work out the kinks, designs, raps, etc until they've gotten to where they are now.
