He was the first artist in Grammy history to win all four general field awards in a single ceremony, bringing home Record of the Year ("Sailing"), Album of the Year (Christopher Cross), Song of the Year ("Sailing"), and Best New Artist at the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards in 1981. There’s an instrumental version of this by the late great jazz trumpet legend, Freddie Hubbard, that’s probably cool for driving as well. 😊 You might enjoy to check out a video of a background recording session for Donna Summer, on a song called, State of Independence. Her part is already recorded so she’s not in the video, but there’s about 9 solo artists all called upon to sing in unison on this track, in some other language, almost like a chant. In addition to Christopher Cross & Michael McDonald, it will blow your mind who else is on it but that session predates We Are the World by like 5 years. It’s like someone must’ve just had a camcorder & was videoing, not particularly professional shooting. One thing to notice is how low key, humble & shy everyone seems, like no diva ego. In fact one singer seems kind of nervous cause she was smoking a cigarette in the studio which would be unheard of & totally taboo today, especially for singers. Anyway you might enjoy it. Great reaction! 👍🏾

The "Laura" song is about a real incident that occured in downtown Columbus, Ohio. A family on their way to church one Sunday morning was caught in gang crossfire and young teen Laura sitting alone in the back seat died from the gunshots. Christopher heard of this from one of his friends that knew her. There are the lyrics ..." Friend of a friend, friend to the end ..." A beautiful song, but sad.

The most ballsy thing a writer does is "no-lyrics." My favorite part too. It's just the punchiness and the harmony. When you're writing, you think, "No I can't write that. it's just jibberish." But then you think, "Yes, it's MUSIC." This is a great song for cruising down the highway, wind in your hair, accelerator to the floor, with the siren and flashing red-and-blue lights fading in the distance as you accelerate.

When I was in highschool, the middle school band played this. They blew air through their horns to get the wind sound. They had a kid the bongos. That was wrap. That concert was over. Mind you they played first. That band director had them do that song right. It was magical. I am so proud for the parents of those kids. They got the best show ever from kids. 30 years later I sang this song with my buddy, a professional singer, in my home. Gave us both great joy. We knew every word and phrase. It's a powerful tune. We have to cover this.

It's a kick to me that you go so far back with pop rock music. This one from Christopher Cross was a colossal hit in the late 1970's when soft rock was king of the radio waves. Same with Michael McDonald and them Doobie Bros. Also still much good pop-soul and funk-soul. Can anybody say: "Won't you take me to Funky-TOWWWWN!" I could name dozens more but just check out any top 40 list from 1974-1979. Wish you'd been around then. Life seemed more ... pleasant.
