It is so great that we now have people such as Hitchens who are openly debating and exposing the falsehoods of religion. We've needed this for ages. People need to get off their duffs and take in awesome beauty and ugliness that is reality. Science is the poetry of reality, as Richard Dawkins says.

Atheists know that morality should be practiced for morality's sake. The religious are working an angle by being good. They are hoping for an eternal reward.

+NortonsNestMonthly Sorry for responding a full year later, but in adding to your statement; Not only is the reward-motivated behavior worrying, but even worse is it when they say they would otherwise pillage, rape and torture if they didn't have those morals and laws from their religious texts to guide them through life. That they are punishment-motivated to keep them from acting out terrifying behavior, that the only thing holding them back from killing someone else is the fear of a god punishing them after death. Statements I have heard several times from religious people. I don't believe them when they say those things, I believe and hope that they are just ignorant propositions. But just imagine if that weren't the case...

Because it suited her so well, and she wanted to wear it all the time, she came to be known as Little Red Cap. That one is MY personal favorite fairy tale!

Hitchens is a brilliant man. He speaks in such a way as to leave no doubt or ambiguity as to what he means. Nor is he afraid to offend anyone who seeks to stifle the progress of secular freedom. Hitchens will own a motherfucker from time to time. My favorite interview is when he speaks to the host of Wretched Radio. He actually said "Who gives a shit" on the air.

"The smashing of your individuality only begins at the point of death". Hitchens, as someone who is deeply suspicious of earthly tyranny, can be forgiven for extrapolating such nightmares into the realm of faith... but only insofar as he is ignorant of the realm of faith. As one who has encountered God supernaturally hundreds of times, I can tell you that 'smashing your individuality' is not what God is about. Rather, he 'came that you might have fullness of life'. Atheism causes hopelessness because after death their is nothing. It causes selfishness because their is no reason to care for others. It causes arrogance because their is nothing higher than your thoughts. God based religions offer hope after death, care for Gods creation and humility in the face of greatness of God.

Also, we're all self-made people, whether you'd like to believe it or not. I simply choose to forsake my chains where you are glad of them. I am no one's slave, the least of all Jesus, who is long since dead. The only thing in this world that I worship is my wife. And I was once religious. I grew up in a Christian/Catholic home. I will NEVER return to something I abhor so distinctly and deeply. I laugh at it. I hope you free yourself of your chains one day. Truly I do.

Let us say (by analogy) . . . that Hitchens were instead claiming that hamburgers don't exist. He argues INTELLECTUALLY that hamburgers are a self-serving myth propogated by the beef industry . . . that people believe in hamburgers because they are hungry . . . and so on. But . . . he doesn't ever go to Macdonalds, order at the counter, put what he's given in his mouth, chew, and swallow. That's all intellectual -- not empirical . . . and lacking in personal integrity.

@TomFynn Actually there is: Titus, Flavious Josephus, and many others. The Gospels were written between 64 & 71AD. The Gospel of Mark, the first Gospel that we can date by the oldest Book of Mark found in Atioch, dates between 64 & 66AD. There are more copies of the Gospels throughout the Middle East & Asia Minor than anywhere else. When you actually read it in context..there are no contradictions! There are archeological and history findings of the Exodus. They even showed it on PBS!! :0)

For example take a person, a person is made up of organs, those organs are made up of tissues, those tissues made up of cells and so on all the way down to molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles which are, as of current, the smallest observable form of matter. Following this pattern you will eventually encounter a particle that cannot physically explain its existence within itself, thus proving the necessity for a non

You need a reason based on fact and hard evidence for every belief you hold. If there isn't a reason based on facts or hard evidence then you don't just pick an alternative because you can't answer the question. That is called guessing and it won't get you anywhere. In those situation the smartest thing to do is throw your hands in the air and say I have no idea. That way of thinking is dangerous and can slow down progress for all of mankind. I agree with Christopher about the Gods of the Bible and the Quran, they are tyrannical Gods not loving Gods... but if there WAS some kind of God or higher power out there that was true love who truly did care about us and wanted us live happily after we die. Then I WOULD want to meet and be with that type of God. But sadly I don't think such a being exists or the likelyhood of such a being existing is slim, but I would love to believe a true loving God like that exists.

On the one hand you look at reality where no one has ever seen anything but matter change forms but never its creation. The Council of Nicene were Bishops, Deacons, and Priests who went over the Scriptures and made sure that all the Books of the Bible were from the Original Hebrew, Aramaic, & Greek. Also, the entire Bible was put together where the books coincide such as when the New Testament quotes the Old Testament: i.e. Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, & Acts. :0)

It's a shame that so many responses to the Hitch is to bastardize his stance. I.e., the old "believing that there isn't a God is an act of faith," and other inane twists of logic to avoid their burden of reason. Invasive religious belief is one of his targets, and those who won't acknowledge this ideal are probably perpetrators themselves, or at least enablers to that mindset.

I don't see how you can say "matter is not self existent" since that's all anyone has ever experienced. All we see is one existent thing changing into another existent thing. But even if you conclude that "the first cause argument is a good reason to believe in God", please explain how it's a good reason to pick any particular God?

Communism was not a doctrine based on atheism. It was a belief in human authority. Just like religion, except that religious authorities say they have divine guidance. Atheism conflicts directly with communist ideology for the same reasons it would religious ideology. I'm not sure why you are debating this point.
