You have had the hate and the fiction now the TRUTH ... The Missionaries of Charity established in 1950 by Mother Teresa, now known in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. In 2020 it consisted of 5,167 religious sisters." A member of the congregation must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and the fourth vow, to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor." Missionaries care for those who include refugees, former prostitutes, the mentally ill, sick children, abandoned children, lepers, people with AIDS, the aged, and convalescent. They have schools that are run by volunteers to teach abandoned street children and run soup kitchens as well as other services according to the community needs. These services are provided, without charge, to people regardless of their religion or social status. Their mission is to care for (in Mother Teresa's words) "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone." It began as a small community with 12 members in Calcutta (now Kolkata), and in 2020 had 5,167 members serving in 139 countries in 760 homes, with 244 of these homes in India. The sisters run orphanages, homes for those dying of AIDS, charity centres worldwide, and care for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Europe and Australia. They have 19 homes in Kolkata (Calcutta) alone which include homes for women, orphaned children and homes for the dying; a school for street children, and a leper colony. Those who are sisters or Priests in the Charity visit their homes every five years but do not take annual holidays The first home of the Missionaries of Charity in the United States was established in the South Bronx New York, ] Their first rural mission in the United States, in 1982, was in one of the poorest, former coal mining areas of Kentucky, where they still serve. The quality of care offered to terminally ill patients in the Home for the Dying in Calcutta was the subject of discussion in the mid-1990s. Some British observers, on the basis of short visits, drew unfavourable comparisons with the standard of care available in hospices in the United Kingdom. Remarks made by Dr. Robin Fox relative to the lack of full-time medically-trained personnel and the absence of strong analgesics were published in a brief memoir in an issue of The Lancet in 1994. These remarks were criticised in a later issue of The Lancet on the ground that they failed to take account of Indian conditions, specifically the fact that government regulations effectively precluded the use of morphine outside large hospitals In Phoenix, Arizona, the sisters' accommodation for 40 homeless men is funded by a clothier, featured in Vogue, who grew up within a few blocks of Mother Teresa's original home for the dying destitute in Kalighat, Calcutta. Princess Diana, who was very close to Mother Teresa, wrote that she found in her "the direction I've been searching for all these years". Mother Teresa's sisters were particularly hard hit by the 2020 outbreak of COVID-19, as in places they continued to distribute food and minister to the poor who had been affected. Violence against missionaries In July 1998 in Al Hudaydah, Yemen, three Missionaries of Charity, two Indians and a Filipina, were shot and killed as they left a hospital. In March 2016 in Aden, Yemen, sixteen people were shot and killed in a home for the elderly operated by the Missionaries of Charity. Among the dead were four missionary sisters: Sisters Marguerite and Reginette from Rwanda, Sister Anselm from India and Sister Judit from Kenya. Bishop Hinder described the attack as "religiously-motivated". A Salesian Syro-Malabar priest who was living at the facility, Fr. Tom Uzhunnalil of Bangalore, India, was taken prisoner by the attackers.

I like the principle of objectivity. It's a great aspiration. I like the denouncing of harmful actions, whoever perpetrated them, and especially when they are irrationally excused due to some perceived saintliness. What we must be cautious of, however, is thinking that embracing "objectivity" is like innoculation, over in a shot, thereafter protecting us from all rational error. Through his subjective, fallible lens, Hitchens cites wickedness of a religious person to condemn religion.

I am a Christian, but I apsolutely agree that mother Theresa was a fraud and the people who run the Catholic Church (as well as any church that profits off of their congregation). For any catholic person, don't jump down my throat- you were probably born catholic so it's tradition and family time, I don't blame you. Jesus wanted to help the poor and lived a humble poor life hisself. I don't believe he would approve of the Catholic Church one bit- they have enough money to probably feed and cloth the world yet they do nothing. Mother Theresa gave her time to the poor but collected millions in their name while watching them suffer, that doesn't make her an honest Christian in my eyes. Not judging her-just making an observation. And don't attack me if you are atheist- my beliefs are mine and yours are yours

She never lost her faith, she doubted, and this is a sincere human experience That many great lives experienced. But of course I do not expect a superficial neo-atheist to grasp that. Yes there was a time when atheism was represented by sincere and respected intellectuals. That is not the case today.

Well you just answered your own question. He MADE is money, earned it. He didnt accept millions of dollars that was stolen from the poor. Pretty obvious distinction, i would hope. BTW Hitchens has a hate for religion and what it does to people, its not a vandetta against Catholics

Really? The amount of keyboard warrior-ism here is disgraceful. Even if all the bad things she did here are true and they may well be,she still helped a hell of lot of more people in the worst parts of the world than anybody here or any one you know ever will. There are two sides to everything and the fact you are all gathered here focusing on the negative and ignoring all the positive indicates something else. Just look at the insults supposedly grown adults are throwing out. I'm a fan of Hitchens but the lack of respect here for an iconic figure that no one here personally knew is disappointing. Anyone with a varying opinion please post away but just keep the conversation respectful. Thanks!

The fact that's you're trying to excuse bad behavior by some type of justices good is fucked. Their are two sides to every story, didn't realize one was worth over looking more than the other.

Dread Supreme Thanks for your comment, I understand what your pointing out but I must ask where in my comment I dismissed Mother Theresa' s wrong doing? No one in this world is perfect and as you correctly stated there are two sides to every story it's just some people are more influential than others I felt I had to point that out because every one here is just bashing her. Have a good day :)

Now is a good time for everyone to start smoking tobacco. It has recently been proven that 96 per cent of people who don't smoke die anyway. Unless you live to be 100. We know that hardly anyone dies after 100. Thank you Chrisopher for you message, and your bravery for saying publicly what many are afraid to.

You are beinoor g delusional by thinking world in an idealistic way which it will never be and when shit hits the fan you are the first one to be mentally traumatized. I can't imagine the kind of idiots the westerners are that they some "guru" to learn shit about the world. You have money? Spend it and travel around the world. Give to the deserving people who sell you stuff, not to the undeserving who act poor aka professional beggars. Give money to children for education and food in poor nations. Don't call on other's attempts to make the world a better place cheap. It's just shameful for humanity to do that.

For anyone, not just Christopher Hitchens, to make these kind of statements about an individual who has presented themselves in the way that this subject has, need to make absolutely certain that what they are saying is based on fact. If it were not, then a defamation case could certainly be actioned against the person who has said these things. Of all the arguements Hitch has offered to anyone that is willing to take him on in an adverse position, he has responded with a depth of knowledge and understanding on any subject he has been challenged on. This happens because he is willing to research his subjects in great depth. If only many people were willing to do this, then maybe, just maybe, human beings would spend less time fighting about who's right and who's wrong and spend more time living harmoniously.

@PTSD101 I should also mention that Mother Teresa saw it as as her God given right never to have to pay anyone for anything. Once she bought food for her nuns in London for GB£500. When she was told she'd have to pay at the till, the diminutive seemingly harmless nun showed her Balkan temper and shouted, "This is for the work of God!" She raged so loud and so long that eventually a businessman waiting in the queue paid up on her behalf.

@Murdulo Well reasoned argument. I suppose if one wishes to be critical of Hitler or Stalin or whoever, then (with sufficient evidence) one may be critical of Mother Teresa as well. Having listened to what he has said I think one can feasibly argue Mother Teresa deserves some criticism, although one can also defend that point as well. But on the whole I think she was a good person

@CondorDM Not really. God has a problem unicorns do not have: it is based on a logical contradiction, as it is: (1) Everything needs a creator, a designer (2) God is the creator, the designer (3) Oh wait, we must exclude God from #1 Unicorns aren't based on a logical fallacy of this sort.
