Some of the comments about this video show that religious belief has nothing to do with experience or reason but with deep and irrational needs. The religious will discount anything that runs counter to their beliefs; they are willing to ignore all the findings of thinking minds through all the centuries since the Bible was written. Everyone has an aversion to being lied to but believers willingly sacrifice their critical thinking and logic and accept that they MUST believe in something without doubting it. There is one question for believers that I find to be the most telling when they respond. Going back that far with as questionable as records can be, if you want to believe someone existed or not, you can make a bit of a case for it either way, just don’t expect it to be all together convincing. Just as he said it doesn’t matter if Socrates did exist or not, his teachings, his thoughts and methods, etc. cannot he denied to still exist. The same could be said if you are inclined for the Jesus figure. I'm an ex member of a religious sect, and while being well known for my sharp memory and intellect among the group, I was called and flown out to the HQ of the founder of the sect to help him remember bible verses during his teaching. His health was declining and I filled that lack for him. Yet he was around 70-75 at the time. The point of this story is being 70 and his memory being in such a decline. Since the gospel stories are recorded around 70 - 100 AD, that would put the authors of gospels at well over 70 years old to write down the story of jesus. This being said im sure you can put the pieces together. lol

Yes, the scripture states that we have the mind of Christ. In some respects that is true, such as when God speaks to us from His Word. But, I've found that He is largely silent much of the time. Then we have scriptural teachings to falls back on, but we have to be very careful how such teachings are interpreted. The Resurrection of Christ is also a fantastic claim, as is that Christ's death was to pay for the redemption of those that chose to believe in Him. The New Testament is full of what Mr. Hitchens would call "fantastic claims". And I agree, they are shocking, difficult to believe or fathom. But God gives grace and faith to believe and trust in them. Without such grace man is incapable of believing them in his own strength. I think reading the biographies of Hudson Taylor, Dawson Trotman and Billy Graham would take variance with Hitchens' claim that there is no record that these folks understood the mind of God. On the contrary, I think God used them to bring great multitudes into His Kingdom. Trotman's and Graham's organizations live on today. These organizations' motives are to bring the Good News of the Gospel of Christ to as many as possible. If you want to speak of the exertion of power over other humans in the real and material world, why don't we discuss the corporate world and the corruption there? I've experienced this first hand as an accountant, also with the legal system as an expert witness in a lawsuit. I had to leave a job because of the corruption of the people I was working for. Do you realize the harm, both professionally and financially, such corruption causes? Does Hitchens speak about such corruption or is he just about religion?

Possessions! He has many great possessions which means very much to this man. One could say he is attached to these things, so Jesus tells him what he needs to hear. Renounce those possessions and only then can he have eternal life. But he needn't renounce them physically, all the ruler needs to do is cut his attachment to them psychologically. Jesus is telling him that his attachment to his wealth and possessions will always keep him from enlightenment. My guess is he is trying to explain to his disciples the cost of enlightenment. To live the truth costs everything psychologically speaking. We can no longer believe in any doctrine or ideology. If his argument is based on such false premise, what good is it? Hitchens states the central tenet is "Take no thought for tomorrow." Did he read only one page of the Bible? In its whole context, a much truer central tenet of Christianity is, in short, that all men are sinners, incapable of unity with the perfection of God. I enjoy the criticism that Christopher Hitchens makes about religion but he completely misses the meaning of the sayings of Jesus. Maybe because he misunderstands the nature of communication in the era of Jesus was a kind of story telling which is a kind of parabolic logic. It is obviously not meant to be taken literally. This is ironic because almost all people who believe in Jesus make the same mistake which is to take Jesus literally. Mr. Hitchens is using a mis interpretation to argue against another mis interpretation! This is a kind of supple and Socratic logic but is misguided. For example, when Jesus is talking about not caring about tomorrow will bring and the necessity of leaving the family, he is probably talking about the dangers of tribalism which leads to warfare and conflict. When he talks about not caring about what tomorrow will bring he is talking about the mind based state which is never able to be in the present moment and creates fantasies which distort reality.. This is ironic, because the same tendency to take the stories of Jesus literally exists within both the critics such as those come from the atheistic view and the so called religious view. It is easy to poke holes in the opposition because both views are quite absurd if you are only able to use more contemporary standards of logic which are largely scientific. C.S.Lewis did not say that Jesus must have believed that the world was immediately coming to an end. It is futile to argue with a literalist, believer or unbeliever. If you point out that Jesus spoke only in parables they yawn and go on pretending that that doesn't make any difference. The question for both though is not did Jesus exist in history but is Jesus Christ alive today. I think Jesus is the Word of God, alive and well in every believer, the power of Christ for the salvation of the world. That of course means to anyone whatsoever, 'for God so loved the world....that whoever believes shall be saved.' I dare not go beyond that and add my own wisdom. Hitchens is wrong by virtue of the fact that faith comes from God and not by human wisdom. But we can reason about the prospects of a world without God, hence, morality and the practical advances of culture. If there is no God all things are permissable. Clearly, even Hitchens would agree that not all things are permissable.

I would say that the proper way to address Hitchens, or any deniers, is with the truth. I pray for Hitchens. The kingdom of God has come upon the earth and few there are that find it. Nevertheless, this is my Father's World. That means everyone in it is in the Kingdom of God but it does them little good if they choose to remain in the dark. Does that take away anything from Jesus Christ? He is there for them, too, only they are blind, lost, and dead.
