Amen. I wrote him off years ago, but lately-and I say this as one whose religious faith has only grown stronger through secular study-I've come back to Hitchens for his sincerity and articulate inquiry. Christopher Hitchens level of lucidity seems hard to find in today's shallow but vast sea of information and quick-buck "influencers." Thanks for the comment! Take care, James.

It is, and has always been, the source of all morality on Earth. Please forgive our mistakes, we're getting better at it." The Grand Lie is directly causing child abuse by being allowed to exist...it must end because the believers CANNOT unpoison themselves because of the generations of lies. +Sid Kid Depends on how you define "God", of course. If you define it as a flying man in the sky, it doesn't exist. If you define it as an organizing principle, it must exist, since we see organization in the Universe. The latter is most likely what most religious people really believe deep down. More often than not theyre too dim to articulate themselves without breaking logic. Some are in fact experiencing hallucinations, however, and a flying man in the sky may really exist for them, for all intents and purposes.
@sidkid40759 жыл бұрын
God does not exist in any form. Its either a set of rules that are the basis of nature and the universe or its not and that is what most people cannot get their heads around. I was once a believer, changed when I was nine years of age as I could not square the pious crud taught by many about what was occurring in the world as it is. When I learned about DNA and the Big Bang I was finally convinced. I just wish I could articulate as well as Hitch but that is the limitation of my own natural brain, a brain given to me by genetics and ultimately the Big Bang and perhaps previous Big Bangs, and I may come across as dumb and dull minded by some, but I know that Hitch and we other deniers are right. Tim is actually a very civil and thoughtful person when he executes his questions... though i must admit most of them have been addressed before... he's probably one of the few theologians i can listen to. no wonder hitches was able to stomach him, he's quite nice.
@blindsquirrelsnut79395 жыл бұрын
I think his opponent was secretly atheist but has a reputation to uphold. That wasn't a debate at all. They were good friends. Tim basically allowed him to speak the entire time and didn't rebuttal anything related to religion.

I would add that nay christian who partakes in communion has committed cannibalism . After all the priest proclaims the words " this is my body which will be given up for the forgiveness of sins ".

I must say that all the debates I've watched where Hitchens debates religion, this is by far the best, Here both men are trying to explain their positions rather than win an argument, Well done.

I am sure he would appreciate your irony. Once Hitch said in a debate with Dr. Demski something like; "I can meet Shakespeare in this life because he is immortal in the works he's left behind." Hitch too, is immortal in the works he's left behind. There are a number of new books coming out. I cannot wait. Every time I read his books, I can read it in his wonderful voice. It is as though he is talking to me. What an insightful mind and wordsmith he was. Simply outstanding.

Hi! I need help.. I don't get that part after 16:02. Right before that point, they were talking about how Tim hasn't made any proselytizing remark to Hitch and at that, Hitch was saying he would've been impressed. But then it suddenly transitioned to a different topic (at least to me; apparently I'm not getting the connection). Tim started saying "Someone might ask you a question, and you would be available in response, but I think this undercuts this notion that... that... and it's one of the threats that runs through this book is the necessity of making valid arguments in this absolutest way.. and I was wondering if it was necessary to state these propositions quite so absolutely to find any use of them; to say that some forms of religious expression are destructive just in the same way.. I mean, look, there are some religious systems, and sets of religious beliefs, like some people who are no damn good. BUT, that's not the tenor of the argument you've advanced here." Call me dense, or whatever, but I really don't understand how the part right before 16:02 flowed into the quoted paragraph above. Help?

I tried, but I don't understand either.
@deloford5 жыл бұрын
You are overthinking! As you say the point Hitchens made was ALL Christians (including Tim) should want to proselytise. Tim denies that stating it would be deeply disrespectful and then states the book is too absolutist (your quote above), so this is his response to the accusation that all people of faith will proselytise. No that is too absolutist, it is only a minority that behave badly. Hitchens then responds by attacking the idea of 'moderates' saying ok then 'on what grounds' do you deny/cherry pick from the bible.. its a crucial part of the debate.

Funny, because unlike many commentators I thought Rutten was actually a very good interviewer. He really knows his stuff, he asks sharp questions, and most importantly, he never really tries to make it about HIM. The problem was, an hour turned out to be really a bit too short, and at the end, he had to cram in a lot of questions. To anyone who says Hitchens DESTROYS him, I sincerely do hope you know the difference between an interview and a debate. I'd have much liked to see these two debate.
