Which mallet would be best for porgy? I have the 4, which seems too dark, and the 6, which seems too heavy. I'm leaning on the 3, but if anyone has a thought before I spend the money, let me know.

Austin, I use the 5 for porgy. It's my "general" mallet, and it's the lightest I own. My concern with the weighted mallets is that they may slow me down.

+Alex Braud thanks. I went with the three, but this is good to know. I've actually been less concerned with weight and more concerned with the handle. the thinner rattan seems to spring the head to its next objective a bit quicker than, say, the Jim Ross brown.

I used the 5 and they sound just perfect. it also depends on the instrument that you are playing with !

My band teacher says dont look at the bars

Usually, musicians should know where the bars you need to play are from memory so you can focus on the music and the conductor.
