I'm currently writing a book and I firgured it wouldn't be too bad to final start reading some books. You know to see the material that mine would be competing with. I'm currently reading book one of Eragon its the first fictional book that I've preceded to open and read. But, I got on question. Do all writers have these uneventful chapters. Don't get me wrong its obviuos he has talent or his book wouldn't be doing so, well. I personal would have like more action mixed into the story.

Since the first part of Solembum's prophecy "...When the time comes and you need a weapon, look under the roots of the Menoa Tree." came true in Brisingr I believe that the second part "Then, when all seems lost and your power seems insufficient, go to the rock of Kuthian and speak your name to open the Vault of Souls." means that Eragon must go to Du Fells Nasgaroth, find the rock of Kuthien,

I definitely respect this guy for the time he spent writing such a long book, and sticking with a story idea long enough to turn it into four volumes. But I really think some of that time should have been spent on researching some things and making more believable, sympathetic, and dynamic characters. That would makes these books sooooo much better.

I always thought he got it from Aragorn, from LOTR. He used LOTR runes on the map, and used a line from the Hobbit in the last book when he's dodging that snail. He must have been a big fan.

@dairyduck The problem most fantasy fans have with Paolini's books is that his characters are OVERWHELMINGLY standard. It's true that there are some elements in fantasy fiction that are mainstays: an epic journey/quest, a fictional history, fantastical races, etc. And that's what makes the genre great as a whole. But Paolini doesn't make any effort to bring something fresh to the table. I have a lot of respect for the guy, but still, it doesn't hurt to change the game up a little bit. By the

@Pixiez first of all, it would be stupid of you to think that i don't enjoy fantasy besides inheritance. i love orson scott card, LOTR, harry potter, and realistic fiction as well. so, before assuming that the only reason my opinion differs from yours is because of my apparent lack of experience... don't. i think that there ARE similarities to other books within eragon, because all writers are inspired by one another. but there are enough unique conpets in eragon to make great in its own way.
@Genetic1714 жыл бұрын
@TheKingOfCarmel Like I said before, every writer gets inspiration from somewhere, whether it be folklore, ancient mythology, or any other source of media. Almost every idea has been used before, Inheritance being no exception as you say. But again, every writer has their own style, and own type of writing that differentiates even the closest of story lines.

@dairyduck Well, that's a strange variation you've got there. I've read both the original Norse itself and the organic and synthetic variants on it and, last I checked, Paolini's language doesn't have much in common with either. Teenage girls should have something to think about, not something to ruin their vocal chords on. The literary establishment makes a great effort to get teenage boys reading Pullman and Tolkien, but seems to think that girls should be left with any old plod.

@dairyduck This really made my linguistics students laugh. Yes, that's exactly my point: Paolini came up with the language from scratch, it's just nonsense that he thought up off the top of his head. Tolkien, using his grounded education in linguistics, examined the Germanic and Romantic and made of them plausible dialects and vocabularies that one can imagine could actually evolve in the real world.

people it comes to the point where all ideas etc have all been used up and thought of and something original is impossible to make, as long as hes made it his own story, who can say that there isnt a million hollywood movies that are remakes from the past, or songs that are remakes of old songs, lyrics and tunes, to come up with something original now is very hard i thing, although i hvnt read many books, i am very intrigued by his books and have enhoyed em as much as anything. ;)

@dairyduck A good invented language is ALWAYS a variation on, or an amalgam of, various real-world languages, since that's HOW the real world languages it borrows from came into existence too. Yes, millions do love the Inheritance Cycle. Millions "love" the Twilight books, too.
@lilbluehersheykiss14 жыл бұрын
@homedawg60 the problem is, it's not just similar. the names and places=LotR. (arya and arwen. melian and melian. furnost and fornost. morgoth and morgothal.) the plot is exactly the first starwars. and true names and dragons were not his original idea. aside from that, it's filled with purple prose, innuendoes, underdeveloped characters, and the story is plot driven rather than character driven. murtagh, for example, is a slave of the plot. it's just... bad.

Every book gets its idea from another book. LoTR was not the first book to ever use Elves and Dwarves or Dragons for that matter. Just because they use some of the same races, or it has certain similarities, the book is individual and every writer gets their inspiriation from somewhere and some get it from other pieces of writing. So everyone get off his ass, he's a great writer and I cannot wait for the 4th book and any other series he releases.
@pat516814 жыл бұрын
speak his true name to "open the Vault of Souls" or to unlock a secret stash of Eldunari that the wild dragons disgorged before death. This would make Eragon much more evenly matched against Galbatorix in the fourth book and I think that this just fits in too well so Chris Paolini must have that planned for book four

Its obvious :consciously or not Paolini's borrowed a lot of his ideas from books like LOR,and Its also undeniable he's been inspired by some words from Tolkien's "invented"languages.But I think he's put sth more in his story,the link between the Rider and his dragon for example, he described it in a really moving and inspired way!That nd many other thgs make his story unique and maybe not a masterpiece but a really good one which can transport the reader elsewhere,and that's the point of fantasy

Nice. So I can rant without being interrupted? If the only argument you can muster up still is that Arya isn't Eragon's sister (with equally unimportant side notes) then you're not worth arguing with much either... Han did, btw, disappear from the story for some amount of time. Also even Yoda has a counterpart in that elf dude whoever Eragon is training at. I forget the names. The wise old hermit. Last of the jedi/dragon riders if you discount obi-wan/brom, title character and the villain.

@lilbluehersheykiss It's quite different from His dark materials (which, I have to agreed, is awesome, better than Eragon, but that's not the point). My point is that CP has is own way to describe it, it is not a copy of Pullman's, he has put something from himself in his books and they aren't just a copy of something else.

Funny you don't think that IV isn't the best one. Since that is the one which is ripped off. Lemme make it clear to you. The main character is Luke/Eragon, farmer who lives with his uncle. His parents are unknown. Later imperial stormtroopers/ra'zac come and kill his uncle. He flees with the wise mentor Brom/Obi-Wan. He meets a princess arya/Leia and a rouge Han/Murtaugh. Brom/Obi-Wan get's killed. And he restores the last hope of the resistance vs the empire in an epic battle. Clear enough?

I agree that these books lack the quality that mature readers are used to. But look at children's shows: they seem predictable and insubstantial but they achieve exactly what they intend. They appeal to their audience. Popular books feel watered down or bland because they need to appeal to unreasonably wide tastes. And these books are geared for young readers who don't know much about the scope of literature. For them is serves its purpose, and it's unreasonable to say it shouldn't.

@dairyduck Yeah, well, everybody borrows from the old Greek and Roman legends (stuff like Homer's Odyssey), they're the bedrock of fiction today. Ancient mythology is one of the few fields from which a writer can (bar copying it down word for word) plunder at will, since those stories are so old that they've become ingrained in the global consciousness, and the world expects every writer from Blake and Milton to Eugenides and Franzen to borrow from them. You can't "rip" from it.
