Christopher Reeve’s Kids Discuss Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story Documentary

Despite the “Snyderverse,” the DCU shakeup, and all the iterations of the superhero that have been adapted to screen, for many, the title of Superman is synonymous with the 1978 portrayal by Christopher Reeve. The image of him in that iconic suit and cape is a part of pop culture, and Reeve’s tragic accident, too, is well-known. But what about the man himself, and the subsequent journey following his paralysis in 1995? Filmmakers Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, explores just that with candid recounts from those closest to the Hollywood legend.
Through never-before-seen archives and home videos, Super/Man reveals an intimate look at how Christopher Reeve seemingly found overnight stardom when he made the leap from television to portraying Clark Kent/Superman in Richard Donner’s Superman. Not long after Reeve made the world believe a man could fly, tragedy struck when a horseback riding accident rendered the actor quadriplegic. Under such a spotlight, this life-altering event and his own activism brought widespread awareness of disability, but the road to his new life was a challenging one. With the help of his children, Alexandra Reeve Givens, Matthew Reeve, and Will Reeve, Super/Man shares an unflinching look at the man before and after, and the legacy he and his wife, Dana Reeve, left behind.
At this year's Sundance Film Festival, the cast and creatives behind the documentary stopped by our Media Studio, sponsored by Film.io, to talk with Collider's Steve Weintraub. During this interview, which you can watch in the video above or read below, we learn how the documentary finally made its way to the big screen and the importance of showing the man behind the legend. We learn about the editing process and how difficult it was to remove certain storylines, and Matthew, Will, and Alexandra share how they've continued their father's work through the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

When Reeve was injured in his horse-riding accident, he was unable to pay all of his medical expenses and was about to fall deep into debt. So his friend since acting school, Robin Williams, paid ALL of his bills. Also, for those folks who keep making the same mistake, there is NO "S" at the end of his name: George REEVES - 1950's TV Superman Christopher REEVE - The 1978-87 Movie Superman

God thinking about what Chris Reeve meant to me as a kid and this documentary. Alll I could think is how did America, rap fans or otherwise put a scumbag in my opinion on a pedestal who made fun of the fact that a man who he was old enough to remember in Reeve's prime. Who throughout their lives inspired so many people by playing a very heroic, God like character ro acheive their goals and try to be the best human beings they can be! How can Eminem have had the nerve ,to use that man's crippling injury, an injury that severed Reeve's head from the rest of his body, permanently, with no surgical solution, made him a paraplegic for life! With such insensitivity and unapologetically exploit what happened to Chris Reeve and his family to sell albums? I hated Marshall Matthers before, but I never knew years ago that he talked about Reeve's paralysis in his songs until this past year. I never liked the guy or his music so I only heard it when I was forced too and never heard the songs about Reeve but read about them ny accident! Now more then ever I hope Eminem gets some kind of bad illness even temporarily so maybe he will repent and apologize to Reeve's family for using what happened to him to further his career! But the public has to be blamed too because they made him into a superstar. What kind of asshole makes fun of a paraplegic, the man who played Superman to become famous and what kind of animals wanna sing along to songs belittling any paraplegic period?

Since the Documentary Film was screened at Cannes Film Festival Warner Bros. has since bought the international distribution right's and is likely to provide a Theatrical release this September 2024 and further l on after to ive-stream after.
