Christopher Walken has done loads more than most film fans realize. This fine tribute to Kelly is sincerely done, not solely narrated, and a good example of his love for the craft and his life's works.

Gene Kelly was amazing. He kept you spellbound with his masculine moves and artistry. He had various consummate talents but his own method of dancing was unique among dancers and just magic. My favorite of any dancer ever, he entertained, wowed you with his athletic style yet also with majestic beautiful expressive routines. He could dance with anyone from a mouse, to a beginner like Debbie Reynolds, or ballet trained Cyd Charisse, easily and with total commitment. Those years he danced into our hearts and into a little girls to woman’s awe, was a privilege and lasting wonderful memory. Tears were even shed upon hearing of his death. He was a joy to behold.

Gene Kelly had a great interest in ballet (more so than Fred Astaire, who wished himself sometimes to be cast in 'Everyman' roles), and incorporated ballet sequences into several of his films (e.g., An American in Paris, Words and Music, On the Town). Cyd Charisse was herself originally a ballet dancer and drew compliments from both Kelly and Astaire.
@helenscott82023 жыл бұрын
But, he hated that Cyd Charisse was taller than he was. She had to work continually to stay very low and into the floor even tho she had the heavy ballet background.

This is another example of why TCM is the best channel on TV, especially for those who love classic films, or just film in general. They respect the films and never show commercials during the movie and show them unedited and in the format that they were shown in theatres - i.e. widescreen. And the network is choc full of wonderful tidbits like Walken's tribute here. You learn so much. For a movie lover, TCM is heaven.

Geez, what a find! I worked with Gene for an hour (recording a short bit in his house as a recordist/engineer (one one one - talk about scary), but he chastised me for being a few minutes late (which I'd absorbed), but one total by the book, businessman, got down to business. I set up in his huge entertainment room (30'+ ceiling, wall-in fireplace entertainment room, and set up at what appeared as a poker table. Long-haired (Sunset Strip rocker, I was at the time), I set my Tascam 4-track up at his gaming table, then made typical adjustments. Once comfy, Gene began to read this script, to be sent to French television, for a Cyd Charisse lifetime award show for France. I was scared shi*less, but managed my way through that afternoon in Beverly Hills. If you want to hear the actual recording, search MacLachlan and Gene Kelly. What a freaking day... Lol

@Salobrena Smith Since they aren't making musicals as often, how do you know most actors can sing and dance? And those that do, just how good are they compared to Old Hollywood? When sound came in, a lot of actors and actresses that went into movies came from theater. Now, some do it in reverse. But there is a difference between being 'theater trained' and joining a Broadway show, as they do nowadays. And while there are a number of good actors out there, they squander their talents making movies for Marvel...I detest them, both movies and actors.
