Less of an "interview" and more of a conversation between authors - love it :) So interesting to hear about the difficulties authors face.

Interesting discussion. It is always pleasing to see two colleagues being so positive and constructive towards one another.

Dem beards tho. Fantasy writers so hardcore they ate dragon scales and grew their own face armor.

Pat wasn't kidding when he said he leans into the 10 year spectrum of authors. February 2022 and Doors of Stone still isn't out. 🤣

Re: the paradox of writing less to write more: I've always found that making any kind of art is about capturing a moment or experience. And sometimes you have to go out into the world and sort of collect your inspiration - get experiences, talk to people about your ideas or your life, etc. So that definitely resonates with me, you two talking about that paradox here.

I also use the "build the world, then writing is easy" strategy, but I have to keep plot in mind as I go along because on my first attempt I made this very fleshed-out post-apocalyptic/sci-fi setting I was super passionate about, before realizing I had literally no plot and no ideas on how to make a plot that fits there...

As an author myself, I can relate to everything about this. Even though I'm only 16, I've nearly ruined myself. I'm failing in school, hardly have a life, haven't spoken to my father in a year... but I have my book.

you and me both, assuming its going to take the same time as name of the wind per word 11 years for 250k words we are looking at some time 2031-32 for a 400k book and pat is doing less writing per time and other projects now so add 2-3 years and the book had a major rewrite add 2-3 years so like 2035 maybe? maybe it'll get done in time for 20-th anniversary in 2034 this is my wise mans fear

Patrick Rothfuss was also saying that his mental health isn't really well right now and that it's making it hard for him to be creative

Pretty funny that allegedly, Paolini's mom wrote most of his books, and there are now rumors that Pat's dad wrote most of his books. Two famous individuals with very talented parents.

You fantasy writers are cool people, but there are too many of you! I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean to many to get to in good time. I haven't heard of Mr. Rothfuss here, he seems like a nice guy. I like you Mr. Paolini because you're novels were some of the first Fantasy novels I read (plus they're good(, though if I remember correctly the first I read was Tolkien's Children of Hurin, which is one of my favorite books (and on one of your topic points, it's not that long either :P), along with his Silmarillion, and The Hobbit. Lord of the Rings is great but it's probably my least favorite work of his that I've read. The last fantasy novel I remember reading (though I could have read some not re-memorable) is Prince Armatus and The Dragon by TS Church, they guy who also wrote the Runescape novels which are pretty good. The book doesn't really scream fantasy but I would classify it sort of as such. Also Sword At Sunset, which isn't fantasy really at all, it's more of historical novel, but a really, really good one. And I'm currently reading a couple books about Celtic myths and paganism in Europe, which are pretty good! I also like Sci-fi of course. Ender's Game and Halo: The Ghost of Onyx being among my favorite in the genre. I'm not much of a writer. I have great ideas but I can never get them down on paper. Maybe someday. This is a really cool video, thanks for uploading!

Callum McMillan I have just started and you're right. Rothfuss does such a good job about alluding to future events, too. You know the basics of what may happen but no idea of how. I will be sad to see Kvothe leave the university, though.
