I spent over 11 years overseas out of my 20 so I loved being overseas. I was in Japan stationed at Camp Zama and at Hardy Barracks. Stayed there until they forced me to leave country. After a short 1.5 year assignment at Atlanta, GA I was sent to Ft Shafter in Honolulu which technically an overseas assignment as long as you are not from Hawaii. Then the Army caught up with me and I was assigned to Ft Irwin, CA. After three years there I went to Heidelberg, Germany. I loved Germany so much that after retirement in 1992 and then working at USPS for quite a few years I got a GS join back at Heidelberg in 2009 and haven't left yet. I retired from civil service in 2019 and bought a house here in Germany.

I was one of those lucky airborne infantryman that got Italy as my first duty station instead of Fort Bragg. Italy is by far the best duty station in the Army in my opinion. Your chances of getting Italy are much higher if you enlist as a 11B1P :)

I got Italy for my first duty station and everything about it is amazing the training and the sites and all that have been great. the barracks are actually pretty good it's like college dorms. literally went through basic training with airborne in my contract and my drill picked four us that had airborne and told us that we were going to Italy, and I was excited to go. I'm a 11c and 25 of the people that I graduated with got Italy.

My son is currently stationed at Camp Humphrey's in South Korea. It was his first choice and he got it. He loves it there and is having a great time traveling the country. The army put like 5 or 6 billion dollars into Humphrey's and from what I've heard and see in videos, you would have everything you could possibly need there.

I was stationed in both Germany, it was West Germany at the time, it was a good time but depending on where you were stationed you could have spent 260+ days in the field, I was in Baumholder which was and is a major training area, so we did not go to the field that often because we were there, Korea on the other hand was the Army's best kept secret, without going into a lot of detail, in the 1970's and 1980's it was a much DIFFERNT army, and what was expectable then could not exist in today's world. So, Korea was by far the best assignment, it was a 12-month hardship and dependents were not allowed. but times have changed, and the country that I knew is definitely changed, and the "fun" that was there is definitely gone too.

shipping off the 28th. Ideally i'd stay in texas and be with my mom- i have my comfort zone for a reason and the army is in many regards a means to an end for me getting my masters & law school. That isnt to say at all that im not going into service with a hooah attitude, but if i do get an assignment outside of somewhere i can visit my mom then i do have my fingers crossed for Germany or italy there since the units assigned to those locations do have a solid chance of getting me a slot in airborne school (im joining on a medical waiver and was denied the course as a contract incentive despite scoring a 97 on my asvab & picking an MOS that airborne units tend to be in short supply of- however i can still volunteer if given the opportunity)

In 1964 I walked into the recruiter's office, and, said "I want armor Europe" he said "No problem, sign here" . Did basic and AIT got a 15 day leave, reported to Fort Dix, spent a week there, then on to the Brooklyn Navy Yards and onto a troopship. About nine days later got to Bremerhaven Germany and then onto a train. Then a day later I got off the train in Munich. Munich is the party capital of Germany. The only drawback was being a tanker was a lot of time in the, especially in the winter, when the ground was frozen, so we did less damage. I loved Munich, however, I did get into some trouble there. I got two company grade and one field grade, Art XV,s phase to make PFC twice. After thirty-one months went to Fort Irwin for about six months, then back to Germany. This time it was Baumholder, the place sucked. Stayed out of trouble, and left nine months later as an SP/5. That 1SG was begging me to re-up, but I ETS'ed.

Good information regarding the Enlisted side. It is somewhat different regarding how us US Army Officers get placed anywhere overseas. Your Human Resources Command (HRC) Officer Branch manager (Field Artillery, Engineer etc…) will determine which region as well (along with what you need, for career progression). However, Personnel Command (Perscom) from that region will pinpoint your exact duty location in that country. Having been a US Army Personnel manager for both Officers & Enlisted, I believe it is easier to do assignments for Enlisted members versus the Officers (Field Grade Officer slates is the hardest to do). 👍🏾🇺🇸😃

USArmy transferred him to Killeen Texas June 2022 and she came with him on her tourist visa to help him get settled here and also married in Houston Tx Harris County Courthouse. She was only here 10 days on her tourist VISA and is back in Bavaria. Well now Jan 2023 USArmy has deployed him to Poland. My question is how can I help them so she can get her greencard process started? Can the USArmy help them with processing her application for greencard? They want to be together.
