What would be your #1 choice for a duty station and why?
@futnucks

Fort Hood for sure. It really is "The Great Place". Sure, some stuff happens there, but it's really not bad at all. There are pretty much endless places in relatively close proximity to do anything you want. The post itself has a lot to do as well compared to some others. Near by places that offer so much: Belton, Temple, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and a ton of good hunting and fishing all over the state. Oh, and Marble Falls is just a beautiful place. There's not a lot to do there, it's a small town, but just really nice.

My brother was there the year before. He was on his way to Vietnam and this was AIT. While there he said people returning from Vietnam guys claimed this place was actually worse than being in country except for someone shooting at them. I personally went to Fort Leonard Wood basic base 1970 for me and Fort Carson which for me was a good base to at.

Ft. Polk (Johnson) is by far the worst US Army Instillation in the US, but I’ve never been to Ft. Irwin. There is absolutely nothing worth seeing within a 3 hour (or more) drive of that place. I only had a couple TDYs there and absolutely hated it . I could not imagine being stationed there.

Lot of young men caught up in government subsidized lunacy,,on an industrial level....We signed out at Ft Benning in '70...6 of us lined up at a table with a warrant officer, getting our paperwork.. guy at the head of the line turned around to us and said.. "Holy shit,,, we're still breathin'.....that was a VERY good day....

My life as an Army Brat gave me chances to live on many Army bases around the world. When the joint forces were stationed at Albuquerque,NM, went Air Force, my dad was asked what his dream duty station was. Schofield barracks Hawaii. 1972-75. Fun, right? As a former Marine, I loved S.Korea and Okinawa Japan, and of course Little Creek Virginia.😎🤙

Did 3 tours at JBLM. It was easily the best base in the Army in the 80's/90's. My first duty station was Ft. Carson. Didn't mind it, but I spent 8 to 9 months a year in the field, 6/32 Armor. It was my first duty station and the only reason I reenlisted was to get out of there. I actually retired rather than go to Ft. Campbell and back into airborne status.

I was at Ft. Carson after Germany in 1988 and I hated it because I had so much fun in Europe and I was still only 18. We couldn't go to bars or clubs to meet chicks and Colorado Springs was a small town feel even though it was a city. Denver wasn't so fun even though it was away from Carson, state side was lame. I finally got my 4187 approved and went to Panama and I had fun their and being a Paratrooper and it was a single mans paradise.

Fort Bliss is underrated. The Mexican border there, perfect place to find a senorita, girls who ‘s mind has not been twisted by woke ideology. The best duty station that I have been to is Fort Huachuca Arizona, but you have to be in an MOS that's needed there. There's no combat arms there as far as I know. I was stationed at Fort Bliss before all of the build up, it was pretty good, but if you wanted to leave the area you had a drive ahead of you. San Antonio was 8 hours away, Dallas was 10 hours away, Tucson was almost 5 hours away, and San Diego was 10.5 hours away. The closest place was Las Cruces (48 min) and there was nothing going on there.

Yeah so I’m at fort bliss about to reclass (I’m a 19k)I’ll let you know. Area, if you like city and desert. You will love it. How ever if you have a family… that is a different story. Short and simple. If you are in 2nd brigade. Be prepared to spend little to no time with family. The op tempo is very high. Expect to go to the field for an accumulation of 3-4 months out of the whole year. And then expect to go on a rotation for at least 7 to 9 months every other year. PT is 6:30 am to 7:30. And your work day will end at 17:00 Monday - Friday. Yes. Most of those days you will be in a COF (company over family) or an office waiting… for what? No one knows. Fridays people will tell you release is at 15:00… maybe the battalion releases at that time, but most companies do not. So be prepared… btw this installation has the highest suicide rate. 2nd brigade makes up most of those deaths. Also, it has the highest divorce rate of any other ARMY installation. It also has the lowest retention rating in the army. Sorry if I don’t have a lot of good things to say. But people have to know the truth.

I was not in the army but I had a friend who I grew up with that years ago was assigned to an army unit that operated out of Ramstein Airforce Base had the chance to visit him in 2009 when I took a two week vacation to Europe so we got to meet up and hung out over a three day weekend in Germany and France got to meet his future wife . Had a blast btw German beer makes American beer taste like pig swill. Sorry but its true.

Go to Germany or Korea first. I only went to Afghanistan, Iraq over and over. I was always jealous of the troops stationed in Germany. Italy was a closed second.

As a Tx Veteran Army, who's maternal ancestors fought under Gen Hood's command, I refuse to recognize the name change. I'm the son of retired Air Force Vietnam vet, I was born on Mather AFB. His only brother is retired Vietnam & Desert Storm Army veteran ( chopper pilot). Of my father's family, five members served in WWII, my Great Uncle Donald gave his life to freedom in Italy, 1944. My mother's 3 brothers are/were retired from the US Army. 7 great uncles served in WWII & Korea. My G. Uncle Ray had half his face burned by white phosphorus grenade explosion in Korea. He called the burn his sacrifice to freedom, also did reenactments of "Phantom of the Opera" spot on. His twin sister's husband, my G. Uncle Nix was a WWII member of the 101st Airborne. Mom's family is the Scottish Abernathy clan of Tx, tracing it's ancestors back to Robert ney Abernathy. P.O.W. Scottish army, fighting for King James 1 against Oliver Cromwell at the battle of Bennington 1651. He was sold by Cromwell orders as an indentured agricultural servant and shipped to the Virginia colony in the same year. My plan for today? Hmmm, Memorial day! I'm going to Veterans Cemetery, visit my Mom and Dad's & Uncle Jerry graves.

Interesting that you show Ft. Polk (now Ft. Johnson) in the thumbnail. In the opening monologue in the film, "Patton" (1970), Patton, played by George C. Scott, makes reference to "...shoveling sh*t in Louisiana," he was referring to Camp Polk, as it was in WWII. Ol' Blood 'n' Guts got it right. BTW - Louisiana natives still refer to it as Ft. Polk, and screw the PC name change.

Army Brat and retired Army, so a lot of time around different posts. For combat arms duty stations, my top 5 are Germany, Italy, JBER, Bliss, and Hood (or whatever they are calling it now). For all posts, Germany, Italy, JBER, Huachuca, Bliss. Gordon and Hood would be runners up. Bottom of the lists are Stewart, Benning, Polk....

Hard to fathom what modern day soldiers consider good duty stations since they are alien to soldiers of my day. I was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO in 1962 for training for about 4-5 months, and then shipped overseas for 18 months before returning to spend my last year of my enlistment at Fort Campbell, KY. I liked Fort Campbell because it was like a small town. Very quiet and peaceful outside of my military duties, but my best duty station was in Ankara Turkey for 18 months. Duty was good there and I wanted to extend for 12 months and be discharged after i returned from there. The guy I replaced did that. I had it approved,, but the new Commander that came in about two months before my 18 months was up vetoed me staying on for another year. His only reason he gave me was he thought American Soldiers should not stay away from home too long in a country like Turkey. I was given the choice of going to Germany for one year or returning to the US. In a weak moment I decided to return to the US. But it worked out.

I’ve been stationed at both Fort Campbell and Fort Hood (now Cavazos), they are great places. But I don’t see how they could exclude Schofield barracks in Hawaii, Vicenza, Italy along with Wiesbaden, Germany. Those three places are awesome. 👍🏾🇺🇸

I spent all my time in Germany overseas . It was fun and very interesting from a cultural prospective. It was different we lived in old WW2 barracks .big or smaller rooms .3 stories showers down the hallway. It had a couple of washers on each floor. Sounds kind of Spartan but was not that bad we had a day room TV another with a pool table. Cq desk and Commanders and 1st seargeants office . And that was about it some really weird stuff late at night it was a old German officers barracks . definitely some paranormal type stuff going on late at night. It was still pretty cool steam heat for the barracks and rooms. It was a different experience living in a building like that. Was in the mid 80s.

So all these bases are on Option 19, which is given to certain MOSs, basically it’s a list of 9-10 bases and it’s 100% that you’ll go there after AIT. So based on those 9-10 bases, those are the top 5… Stewart, Drum and Polk are on option 19 as well. Can’t remember the full list of bases

I recently just sign a new contract to reenlist in the army in my old MOS. I was given a choice of duty station between Fort Hood, Texas and Fort Campbell, Kentucky. I choose Fort Campbell as I have not heard good things about Fort Hood.

Was stationed at Fort Hood. Didn't like it. Very hot and humid there. Did like being stationed at Fort Leonard Wood. Thought it was nice. The Bastards of Bastogne. Why did they change the name of Fort Hood? Was stationed at Fort Hood. Didn't like it much. Fort Hood was very large. Part of the Fort is restricted. Didn't like being at Fort Hood. Did like being in the Third Infantry Division at Wurzburg.

I’m stationed at Fort Hood/Cavazos right now and to be honest I “Hate this Place.” Yes a play on words from it being called the great place. It isn’t. Been here for almost three years now and it has gotten worse with each passing year. Some people will say that it is the place that will kill your career in the Army and I have to agree. I have really considered getting out of the Army because of this place. Soldiers are nothing more than a number to the units here regardless of your MOS. And they will use and abuse you as much as they can. And they wonder why no one wants to stay in when they get stationed here.

Don't know about the Army...but i did 26 years in the Marine Corps. And a MAJOR consideration when ranking assignments was always the cost of living in that area. Military pay is much better than it once was, but still lags behind civilian wages. Some installations in high-cost regions can put a very real stress on your lifestyle and budget. Having a bunch of great local amenities you can't afford is not an appealing scenario.

For the continental 48 states, Hood and Bliss were at the bottom along with Sill, Leonard Wood and Polk when I was serving in the late 70s and early 80s. Eustis, Hunter AAF, Carson and Lewis were usually most requested from what I can remember that long ago.

Did temporary duty at Fort Bliss in the 1990s. They can have it. Too hot. Warnings were posted not to leave items in cars because of theft. Had no desire to visit Juarez. My first duty station was Germany. If I was enlisting again, I would choose an overseas duty station.

When I Joined In '79, They Gave Me The Choice Of Ft Lewis, Polk or Hood. I Chose Ft Hood (2AD). With Ft Lewis, All I Could See Was Cold And Snow. Ft Polk, Swamps Came Mind. So Ft Hood Won By Elimination.
