What would be your #1 choice for a duty station and why?
@futnucks7 ай бұрын
Fort Hood for sure. It really is "The Great Place". Sure, some stuff happens there, but it's really not bad at all. There are pretty much endless places in relatively close proximity to do anything you want. The post itself has a lot to do as well compared to some others. Near by places that offer so much: Belton, Temple, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and a ton of good hunting and fishing all over the state. Oh, and Marble Falls is just a beautiful place. There's not a lot to do there, it's a small town, but just really nice.

Ft. Polk (Johnson) is by far the worst US Army Instillation in the US, but I’ve never been to Ft. Irwin. There is absolutely nothing worth seeing within a 3 hour (or more) drive of that place. I only had a couple TDYs there and absolutely hated it . I could not imagine being stationed there.

It was my first duty station and the only reason I reenlisted was to get out of there. I actually retired rather than go to Ft. Campbell and back into airborne status.

I was at Schofield Barracks Hawaii and couldn't believe it wasn't on the list. I'm from Oklahoma, when I was offered Hawaii, everywhere else wasn't an option. I was there 2 years and 8 months. I only did 3 years. So after BT and AIT of 8 weeks, the rest of my 3 years was Schofield. I spent 7 months on Maui, 45 days in the Philippines, 45 in South Korea, about 2 months in Micronesia and around 4 months total at PTO. Pahokaloa Training Area on the big Island. I saw so much in that 32 months, its unbelievable.

I spent all my time in Germany overseas . It was fun and very interesting from a cultural prospective. It was different we lived in old WW2 barracks .big or smaller rooms .3 stories showers down the hallway. It had a couple of washers on each floor. Sounds kind of Spartan but was not that bad we had a day room TV another with a pool table. Cq desk and Commanders and 1st seargeants office . And that was about it some really weird stuff late at night it was a old German officers barracks . definitely some paranormal type stuff going on late at night. It was still pretty cool steam heat for the barracks and rooms. It was a different experience living in a building like that. Was in the mid 80s.

Chris, can you do a video explaining the army cutting tuition assistance
@christopherchaos7 ай бұрын
Possibly. I've heard a little about it from soldiers but I'd have to research it more. It's possible though.

can I choose an oversea's base as my first duty station?
@allen59857 ай бұрын
Yes. I got to choose my duty station and got Hawaii and Germany as some of my options. I ended up choosing Hawaii to stay in the states

I did basic and AIT at Fort Polk, April to August 1972. Peace treaty stopped me from departing for Vietnam. Fort Polk weather alone is like feeling you're in Hell

Recently I was watching West Point Post Night videos. I saw that Germany, Italy etc were often the first to go. I don't have stats to back anything up, but after watching this video, there seems to be a difference in base selection between enlisted and officers. Do you think that is the case?

It's not just the base leadeship. It's the Army and Washington DC leadership as well. A good duty staruon can become a hirrible one when budget swings move from that base or other items.

Ft Detrick 🙌🏿 I was at ft Lewis, base was good but hated Washington. Too expensive, too much traffic, too many homeless. Wok in wok out was good though

I served in the Army from 1973-1990. My duty station of choice is Fort Hood. I was stationed there from 1973-76. The Army never saw fit to reassign me to Fort Hood.

It's Ft Campbell because the post office is on Kentucky side.

I initially chose Ft Bragg in the 90s because I wanted to go to the 82nd, glad to have served in the 82nd but I hated the unit. A plus at Ft Bragg is the SF units and Delta if you're into that. I reenlisted to stay in Panama but got screwed, by far my best duty station at Ft Clayton. I was then stationed in Stuttgart Germany, excellent duty station. A lot of opportunities to drive to different. countries in Europe.
