While heading out fishing in my Honwave T32 I experienced an outboard motor failure with my Tohatsu 9.8HP outboard. As I was unable to get it started again I demonstrated the exchange process with my Yamaha 2.5 HP outboard out on the water including using a jiggle syphon to fill the outboard. The 9.8 HP Tohatsu ran at 20 mph while the 2.5 HP Yamaha ran at 6mph. Details on the problem causing the outboard video can be seen at • Tohatsu 9.8 HP Outboar...

Crazy that I discovered this guy because he built a similar computer to the one I hope to build, then I hear the accent, check the channel, and see a video from Ballyhalbert; where I spent lots of summers as a kid! CRACKING!

Christopher Flannigan I had an overheating issue with my little 6hp yam last year a couple of times. Both times in rowing distance to land thankfully. Great to see you back out again. 👍

You did well there, not an easy thing to do out at sea alone. It would be interesting to see what the outcome is, maybe you could do a video showing the problem?

Chris, for a young chap, you do seem to be very thoughtful of the possible problems and take necessary precautions. Spare engine, VHF handheld, even the ball cock syphon tube to get fuel out of the main tank. I am sure a lot of people don‘t even think of some of the problems of getting caught out by Murphy‘s law. Liked too your videos about how hard it is to row back to shore and how difficult to is to carry the 9.8 hp from boat back to the car up the beach. Well done.

Filming all of that while in that situation is to be commended. I know once again why I like older 2 stroke outboards fo simple and fewer issues in my view. Not good for this to happen on such a new engine

Being there. Done that. Desided time to leave sib and move to same size rib with short shaft transom to use my efi f15 I already had on my T38. Because even though I had external fuel filter, the ethanol in gas contaminated the efi system despite the fuel stabilizer. And despite the only 44 kg of the motor I couldn't move it out the way to place the auxiliary. Add all that to choppy sea and boat near to shore full of rocks and you get the idea. Keep pulling and pulling never quit. A few feet from disaster motor started again. Couldn't rise rpm but managed to get home little by little. Lesson learnt. Auxiliary motor MUST be in its place with its own separate FRESH fuel ready for war every time go out. So either make diy bracket on T38 for auxiliary or leave it all behind and move to a rib.

Nice video. Similar situation happened to me but I had no back up o/b. I had to row against the tide for nearly 6 miles. Not something I would like to do again! It was dark when I got back to shore.

Chris check the inside of the fuel tank, I suspect you will find the pickup tube has become detached. Looking at the video I was out with a pal on his sib with the same motor, same thing happened. Couldn’t understand it until we looked inside the fuel tank and saw the tube floating around on the bottom. Other thing it could be is the breather on the top of the tank is blocked or not working properly. It definitely sounds and looks like a fuel supply issue, in my humble opinion. Quick diagnosis is try a different fuel tank and see if that solves it.

Great video Not bought a Honwave yet but will be, Ive always said to myself I will be buying two engines a small incase my 9.9hp or 15hp ever cut out. my friends keep telling the new engines on 4 stroke never cut out but even the best so called super cars have engine problems and the in the £250,000 mark another video ive saved to my Dinghy library. I was going to ask what is that siphon called, but then you mentioned it was called a jiggle siphon. I will look that up to buy one, very handy gadget. Thanks for sharing, Ray K. UK. YNWA.

this made me nervous, the seas so dangerous, one mistake and suddenly you are in a complete mess, well handled and well prepared. I'm suprised you stayed out to fish, I'd have been worried and gone home. Did you have a radio or anything for contact?

could be something simple like kill switch defective? but theres a lot of causes. carb usually main culprit you can put inline filter between your fudl tank and connector to your engine to stop dirt or water getting to your engine.

Just goes to show the importance of an auxiliary motor, would have been a tasks rowing that distance lol. Might be as simple as a plug failure, probably where I would start, or u sending it to the shop?

Maybe you want to put anextra fuel filter on you fuel line going from your tank to you engine and check you engine filter. Same thing happened to me this summer with my yamaha 15hp after a couple of pulls and throtle twists it was just fine although i did clean my carb again

I think it's a speck or dirt in the carburetor. You could clean the spark, drain the fuel from the carb and everything would be ok
