About the stabilizer, I put the lens on the sigma dock and change the OS for dynamic and it work a lot better. Its like the stabilizer start to work only when you press the shutter but at dynamic, it start working half press using the custom c1 or c2. I got rid of my canon 70-300 L for this one and so far happy with it. You didnt mention that we cant put a tripod collar on it and that is something I miss a lot when traveling, I used to attached my rapid fire on it leaving my body free for changing lens. Anyway, really sharp when micro adjusting with the dock!

I've got a feeling that could indeed be the situation. I wish I had a Sigma USB dock, to check. But really, it should come out of the box working the right way (IMO)
@dhawrylkiw7 жыл бұрын
I agree that the stabilizer is limited out of the box. I just returned from shooting a week long motorsports event, and it was frustrating to pan in mode 2. IMO both stabilization modes function more like mode 3 in Canon's big glass, where stabilization is only active while the shutter is open. Sigma seems to limit the angle of correction that the stabilizer offers before the shutter opens. Looking through the viewfinder, you can see it working, but only in a very small 'range'. Presumably this allows the rest of the correction to be available during exposure. Stabilized shots seems to come out as expected. I have a Sigma dock for a sport lens, but I haven't had a chance to use it with this lens yet. Good to hear that the dynamic mode functions better through the viewfinder.

I don't know if this is a recent change or if I just didn't notice it, but B&H and Adorama in the US include the USB dock for free currently. Maybe that's their way of solving the problem?

Hi Chris, Thanks very much for the review. I have this lens and have updated the firmware with the USB dock. I sold my Canon 70-300 mm, my Sigma 170-500 mm and a fine ukulele to buy it. The Canon was sharp at 300mm (f8), but I think the Sigma is as sharp (or sharper) at 400 mm (f6.3). I don't do video, so the OS is good for me as I generally shoot little birds in morning/afternoon sun at 1/1600 or faster. I find its autofocus is generally as fast as my old canon, and I'm getting better result with flying birds. It is way faster and sharper than my old Sigma, which was in fact very good between 3 to 20 metres (400 mm at f8). I have used the Sigma 100-400 mm on my Canon 600D and 70D. I'm very happy with it. BTW, Canon's DPP (version 4) recognises this Sigma as a Canon 100-400 mm lens.

I use this lens on my EOS 90D and it works great! I use it for wildlife and it gives me some amazing shots; slightly soft (as pointed out in the video). The image stabilization works amazing. Your lens used for the review definitely needed to be updated, or had some other issues wrong with it. The auto focus does the job, but if not the manual override comes handy. The biggest downfall I'd say is the appersture range. Although, the 90D isn't the best in lowlight either, so combine that with this lenses aperture and images can start to become noticeably grainy in anything but ideal lighting. Regardless, I'd say it's a quality lens, especially for the price. Im very happy I got it!

Hello Chris. Thank you for the review. I have the sigma 150-600mm and I'm very happy with it, it's still a large telephoto with all the compromises and a steep learning curve if you are used to them. From your video the OS of the 150-600mm seems to work better. I don't know how it is with the 100-400 but for the 150-600 sigma tells you not to manual focus in AF mode, if you intended to both auto and manual focus use OF mode. Manual focusing in AF can damage the motor according to Sigma.

Hey Chris, so Sigma actually released a new firmware update for this lens the other day, and one of the improvements was for the stabilizer, and I gotta say the difference is night and day. Previously, I had to use the dock to turn on the Dynamic Mode setting to get stabilization that was actually useful, but now even the standard mode is very good, if not even better than the old dynamic setting. The current Dynamic mode is maybe a little too stable now haha.

I’m sure that Sigma will argue that this OS is, indeed, correct out of the box. I, like you, was disappointed at first. The explanation I got was that the OS is ‘held back’ until shutter press and experiment bore this out, but I found it disconcerting. Using the USB dock I was able to set one custom setting to give steady view while shooting and allowing as fast focus as possible. I set another custom mode for movies which slowed focusing to emulate ‘focus pulling’. I’ve had this lens now for a year and it gives me a lot of keepers. Better photographers would get more keepers, I’m sure 😊

Hi Chris, As you probably remember I am watching all your videos and love them. I wanted to leave my opinion here regard this lens. I bought this lens a month ago and took it with me for whale watching in Portugal and Azores Islands. First I must say that this lens is amazing!! Second, I have to disagree on the OS.. I did not try it in video but I could shoot a photo at 400mm and 1/4 seconds and still get a perfectly stablized image.. Maybe it is not the best in class but absolutely worth the money.. You said that the canon 100-400 mark 2 is sharper.. that is absolutely not true.. Both lenses are showing almost exact sharpness in almost every configuration and the Sigma is even sharper at times. I could find that if you shoot something very far on 400 mm closing aperture will show better results and sharper

You should start including sigma tap in console in your Sigma reviews since a lot of the performance can be tuned one's taste with it. I think you can improve the OS performance from being favourable for video to being favourable for stills. Also I guess you can customize it to be more performing better in the viewfinder or final image.

Thanks for the review. I have this lens with the Canon mount, and use an MC-11 adapter to work with my Sony A6500 and A7RII. I also have the USB dock which has allowed me to upgrade firmware and adjust the lens. I have not had the same problem your video shows regarding image stabilization. Plus the Sony bodies have 5-way internal stabilization that helps. I agree with the many reviewers here and elsewhere about there not being a tripod mount for the 100-400 being something of a drawback. Optically, I'm happy with the lens.

My thoughts exactly - you just beat me to the comment! One thing I find slightly puzzling is the lack of a tripod collar and no real possibility of fitting an after-market product, although with a bit of DIY tape it's possible to adapt a Sigma TS-31 collar, as shown here:- www.dpreview.com/forums/post/59616116. I don't trust the lens and MC-11 mount adapter to dangle from the A6500's tripod screw without long term harm ensuing!

The stabilization on the Sigma was my concern. While I think the Sigma is probably sharper than the Tamron 100-400 in the corners, I'm concerned about the stabilization. However, I don't think it's as bad as you make it seem in the video (based on other video's I've seen of it). HOwever, at the same time, I have heard the Tamron's is a bit better overall 3:52 Are you sure that's high pitched "squeal" is normal? I'd think the lens would be quieter than that when focusing. Tamrons are very quiet, and the only other lens I had that sounded similar to that was my 70-200 Nikon (VR) when the AF motor was going out.

Does anyone know how this compares to the Sigma 150-600 C in terms of image quality? I have that lens and I find it to be a little too heavy and awkward to lug around, especially since I'm not a tripod photographer. This one weighs significantly less and is quite a bit shorter, so I'm wondering if it would be worth switching it out since I can still return the 150-600 atm.

Wintereater I have rented the Tamron 150-600 (G1 & G2) lenses and this lens. I liked the reach of the 600 mm but in the end I prefer this lens. This lens is sharper and I prefer the image quality. The final thing for me is how much lighter and compact this lens is. The 150-600 is a big and cumbersome beast and after swinging it around at an air show I realized it’s just not a practical. I’m saving to purchase this lens. It’s one I could definitely carry with me at all times.

I'm looking at similar options. A 150-600 seems great on paper for maximum reach. If the 100-400 is a lot sharper, it would be more convenient most of the time, and add a 1.4x teleconverter when wanted.

Can you please review the new Tamron 100-400? It seems great value for money and it seems very sharp but with a more reliable AF than the Sigma... :)

Hi Chris, I too have the M3/Sigma lens combo and have a very tough time getting the sigma lens to auto focus at a distance - have you resolved the issue yet? Your help is much appreciated! I really like my M3 and use the new 10-18mm and new 18-105mm canon lenses which both perform really well for me. Any Advise? Maranatha

I don't have the lens anymore, sorry! All the best

Hi Chris, what did you replace it with; in sync with your M3?
@STAG1623 жыл бұрын
can this lens be adapted to be used on a Canon EOS M50 (APS-C)? I'm trying to find a zoom lens for astrophotography to be adapted to my current camera, and I'm coming up short.

This lens is of interest to me, would love to see a comparison against the older (but IMHO very good) Sigma 120-400 OS which is significantly heavier!!!

Avea stabilizare bună, claritate a imaginii foarte bună. În cele mai multe cazuri necesita trepied adecvat greutății sale dar eu am tras cu el din mână . Per total ...O sa-i duc dorul.

@@ceadinurmazi I have no idea what this says. What language is it so I can translate it?
@ceadinurmazi Жыл бұрын
@@stephenpartridge686 I had the Sigma 120-400 mm. But for a little while. I was really happy with it. Purchased secondhand for €300. I once repaired the guide mechanism because I dropped it, it's too heavy at 1750gr. And the repair cost €100 somewhere in IAȘI Romania to a former television cameraman. Unfortunately, I haven't experienced much with it. It was stolen from me along with all my photo kit, through Italy in Delta Del PO Veneto, I was studying the wonderful flamingo birds. It had good stabilization, very good image clarity. In most cases, it requires a tripod suitable for its weight, but I shot with it by hand. All in all...I will miss him.

@@ceadinurmazi I too own the 120-400 in Canon EF Mount and would be curious to see the difference between it and the new 100-400…

Does this fit canon do’s 1200D?
@mrcoolwebsworld7 жыл бұрын
I found the tamron 100-400 was a lot better and I can not see the differance to my 100-400 canon other than the weight so I sold the canon for a nice light easy carry around lens.

What, besides price and the initial 50mm, is the reason to choose this over the 150-600?
@christopherfrost4 жыл бұрын
Size and weight is also a consideration

Request: Review of the Tamron 100-400mm f/4,5-6,3 Di VC USD

Just the review I was looking for. I'm between this lens and one of the cheaper 150-600 options. Do you have a preference, specifically the quality at 400mm between this and the Tamron 150-600?
@christopherfrost7 жыл бұрын
The picture quality on this lens will be a bit better, a bit sharper
@JacobDragyn7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for answering. The minimum focus distance and weight were on my mind too.

Hi, thanks for your very useful work mate, I've got SA version and it's quite soft on sigma sdq on 400mm against the light of bright sky but I didn't have a chance to adjust af yet and it's a bit off. AF on sdq is only fairly useful in very good light conditions for things like elephant or slower imo ;) I can confirm OS makes very little difference. On A6500 picture quality is better AF is million times better and actually very good if you use distance limiter, I can't believe OS works with A6500 IBIS but it seems to be better than on sdq, maybe because it's surprisingly well balanced with mc-11 and little A6500 body comparing to sdq. I don't think there is better option to A6500 for wild life with this lens BTW. Also you can put tripod collar on mc-11 with little help of duct tape as I've seen somewhere on Internet. I'm thinking about adopting some collar to fit where lock switch is making two cuts for it at 90 deg so you can turn it portrait. Should be fairly well balanced especially on 400mm. Even that I had it delivered together with 24-105 f4 which this lens looks like piece of junk in comparison ;) it still feels like extremely good value for money. No regrets. Happy shooting.

Sorry, just noticed it was solution Ian Wilkinson mentioned and it was on the lens rather than mc-11, my bad.

Would you recommend this over the Canon 70-300mm L or 70-300mm II?
@christopherfrost7 жыл бұрын
Not over the 'L' lens, but maybe over the 70-300 II, if you really want the extra 400mm reach
@RyvnMusic7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! That definitely narrowed down my choices to two lenses. 70-300mm L and 70-200mm f/4 IS USM with a 1.4x teleconverter.
