Chrollo’s Pain and Burden HxH Chapter 397

This is one of if not the best hunter x hunter chapters I've ever read. The art dialogue story and emotion all add up to be a chapter of absolute perfection. I believe this chapter puts Togashi's strength as an artist and writer on its best display. Just going over the chapter and diving into it could never do justice to the intensity and quality of this chapter. I really can't wait to see what comes next and recently it's felt that each chapter Togashi surpasses the quality of the last.

This chapter made Chrollo make more sense to me. A child who took responsibility for the loss of another child. There was no adult to come in and tell him that responsibility is beyond him to bear. Really his only guidance is the other kids around him, and even all of them look to him for answers. He must have snapped mentally. Because this child still feels he needs to take responsibility for his friends death. Every little thing they found on the way to her body were all just hammers beating into his head that it was all his fault. This event surely broke any innocence in him, and with all that blame to bear we see him sacrifice whatever innocence he had left.

He reminds me heavily of Shinobu Sensui. Dealt with huge trauma that broke him, so he changed his mentally in order to navigate the world he’s more aware he’s in. Difference is that Sensui split his personality in order to shield his more innocent self while Chrollo was already great at tapping into different emotions and used that to almost distance himself from getting to personal or close.

The woman who talked with Machi said that Machi had Beautyful Eyes and she hate it (and we know who has the most beautiful Eyes in Hunter x Hunter, the Kurta Clan). And said woman is implied to be the person who made them Nen Users. Maybe their final "exam" was killing the Kurta. So they decided to make a plan using Sheila as a decoy.

I think the clan was killed off by the troupe because Tserriednich wanted the eyes whom he found out about through Sheila. Tserriednich (and maybe Sheila) convinced the Troupe that the Kurta killed Satasa. In exchange for intel, Tserriednich promises them a large number of eyes after if they pull it off. As for Piro, I think the Troupe would've taken him to Tserriednich to see what he wanted to do with a ind Kurta. Tserriednich saw Piro was one of a kind and cut off Piro's head since a blind Kurta would've been one of a kind. I see Kurapika and Chrolla finding out the truth and joining forces to kill Tserriednich. Togashi probably has a much better plot line that'll leave us all shocked.

I think Machi actually could see aura earlier. When Chrollo went villain mode in the fan dub (I still love that they were fan dubbing!) and had what looked like aura around him, the entire crowd felt something. As Chrollo was channeling an evil aggressive feeling, the children felt fear and awe. Similar to when Gon and Killua could feel things before they knew what nen was (Hisoka's aura, Wing's aura). Only 2 kids did not look scared or shocked. Machi, who looked nonchalant, like this was not unusual. And Nobunaga who was smiling. It is not clear if Nobunaga could see aura or just actually enjoyed the feeling of attack aura even if he had no idea what it was. But since Machi was indifferent, it likely means she has seen and felt this before. This would also mean that Chrollo unknowingly unlocked his aura prior to the trauma too but interestingly it was while playing the villain and not one of the rangers. I would agree though that it was this iconic scene of horror and tragedy that would shape HOW these kids developed their abilities regardless of when each individual one discovered nen/aura. And it was definitely after this event that they all started to know and understand what aura and nen are.

The “beautiful eyes” line feels like she was reflecting on how innocent these children are and yet she just had to reconstruct one that may or may not have had their eyes brutalized. I do think it’s fascinating that Machi is this nen prodigy, and I wouldn’t mind a one shot of that backstory or something. I just picture her relaying all the info she learned to Chrollo and him creating some nen learning program for the spiders that’s super streamlined and efficient.

You missed the whole crowd surprising Chrollo on effortlessly and joyously joining the search team for Sarasa, without a single complaint about the cancelling of the show. There was the most pure emotion of suprise coming from Chrollo and you didnt mention it. It is such an important event 'cause that shows how not only the Genei Ryodan were connected emotionally but all the city was vibrating at the same energy. BTW Togashi is challenging the anxiety in all of us.

Machi wants to rebuilt her Uvo became a weapon of vengeance Shalnark controls people so this never happens again. Chrollo gave up on is individuality as a human to reach the killer But i can't find anything for phinks and franklyn so, again, could be a reach, fun thought non the less

I think that The Kurta Clan discovered that Sheila had found the Village so they paid Silva to kill her in the hopes of the secret location not being revealed. But that made the Spiders wanting revenge, so they killed the Kurta Clan.

One thing that bugs me is Uvo's response/reaction to Kurapika during their fight. "Those eyes were beautiful. The boss really likes them." And Uvo's reaction is excitement, not a pissed/angry Uvo if it really was for revenge.

My theory is the troupe massacre the kurta clan in order to get the informations. so here is the question what information that they want the most? - who killed sarasa - who was behind the kidnapping crimes those murderers took pictures as their crime’s reward which they think is an art to them, and there are bunch of people in this series that like to collecting art. maybe those murderer’s boss are one of them. so in order to get the information of that person (or group) and to get close to the person behind it, chrollo need to bring something that can interested them, and the kurta scarlet eyes are an answer. then why the troupe had to left the meteor city’s motto note after the massacre? I think it’s because they want an evidence that they are the one who did it, to show the world that they are the one whom responsible for. chrollo himself said that he gonna kill a lot of people from now on and he surely made this heavy declaration in such a young age. he is the type of person that when he made his mind, he gonna go all the way for it no matter what the process is. that’s why the dialogue in those dubs are something like “…begrime, get dirty, living in filth” it’s not some ordinary power rengers story like we used to see but it is power rengers ‘cleaner’ In order to get cleaned you need yourself to be the dirty one

This chapter makes the Sheila theory stronger. It would appear that Shiela wanted the Troop to be blamed after getting the Kurta killed. Another interesting thing is that Sheila wasn't going to play the next villain in their voice-overs.

I disagree with the humanising argument. Sure. That forest scene was some seriously heavy stuff but it's not the only bit of humanising they get. The one I can't get over to this day is just Phinks solemnly looking at Gon and Killua, remembering Paku's memories and her feelings then him saying "Paku... Paku wanted to thank you." That scene alone I think does A LOT to humanise them. Especially Phinks. But there's also Melody's inner dialogue when Kurapika is making a deal with Paku and Chrollo. That she wants the same thing he does - to save her friend. I don't get the distinction you draw being depicting them being humans and humanising but hey.

I disagree with you about the humanization of the troupe, you don't need to have a long deep back story for you to feel something for the them. I guess not humanizing, but I think people felt the PT redeemed themselves a bit when they defend their city from the ants. It makes them as anti-heroes or something like that. Are they humanized after this chapter though? They should know that the death of one person's life matters because of their experience but they slaughter many instead. The twist that would make sense would be that Uvo doesn't remember slaughtering the Kurta because they never did. Instead they could be framed for it. I'd need to re-watch/read York New, but I'd probably ask this: - Does Chrollo or anyone else respond to the eyes being in the auction's inventory? - Does anyone besides Uvo see Kurapika's eyes? Is there a reaction there? - How about after Pakunoda dies? Should any memories trigger about the clan? I think if they didn't massacre the Kurta then we could assume the PT has only killed bad guys and then I can see them being humanized.

Those instances were indeed humanizing the troupe, you spent an inordinate amount of time parsing and splitting hairs. While 397 could've wholly humanized the troupe and Chrollo in your eyes it DOESN'T lessen the standard for humanization. Showing grief, remorse, camaraderie, etc, are all valid instances in which their humanity is validated. Thus can all be described as humanization. I'll only agree Ch.397 does this to a further and more understandable degree.

Just a comment, since a point is raised in the video (30:16), there is a theory that the Hisoka shown on the ship is Chrollo in disguise using Bonolenov's "Battle Cantabile: Metamorphosen" (Chapter 377), along with "Convert Hands". The way Hisoka was acting, the way he was hiding his hands in his pockets (something customary for Chrollo, but was never done by Hisoka), and the dark clothes he is using, all that leaks of Chrollo. Btw the two most important details in my view are: The way he asks who would win in a contest between him and the troupe is very reminiscent of the question he asks Zeno at the end of their fight, it is even written similarly, even asking for permission to make the question; And the way he subtly retracts his hands when he's about to grab the VVIP ticket (if he is using the "Convert Hands" he will have to keep his palm hidden), even though it's pretty simple there's a panel just for the hand and another to emphasize the gesture. The theory even goes so far as to say that his bookmark "Double Face" would probably have a restriction like "I can't lie" since in his time on the boat he always deviated from stating that he really is Hisoka, but that's more of a detail. then a central point of theory. (English is a language that I'm not fluent in, sorry for any writing error)

What do you think about the Paraston = Shiela theory? Could it still be true? Look at Shiela’s reactions in 14:02 and in 16:34 it’s almost like she was expecting this. I mean I’m all of them were. But Shiela especially. The two of them could’ve been best friends. And because of that, Shiela/Paraston set off something horrible to happen. And maybe afterward she felt too guilty to stay with the spiders. But she still kept in touch with them which is why she helped them find the kurta village. Or maybe that’s just the way she looks. I’m just going to write things down that I started to wonder about after this chapter. Is it possible that the mafia that killed Sarasa was involved in the Kurta massacre with both having a note left behind? Is it possible that the mafia is the Heil-ly or directly connected with them and therefore connected with the fourth Prince? Is it possible that the Troupe is aware that the Heil-ly has ties with the mafia that dealt with Meteor city, but just don’t know what they did behind the scenes. Based on the flashback so far, the troupe are only luring villains to them as a safe haven off the grid to kill them. That makes the Kurta clan massacre seem uncharacteristic unless the troupe saw Shiela’s death similar to how we seen them respond to Uvogin’s death. How would the troupe currently act if they knew the Kurta weren’t involved and potentially the same people who killed Shiela also killed Sarasa? At this moment, no one can pass from tier 3-5 to tier 1 outside of royal guards. We also can expect the Troupe and Kurapika to have an encounter. Is it possible that the one to trigger that encounter is Hisoka? Hisoka knows the Troupe is seeking him and wants to be entertained. If Hisoka knows that Kurapika is on the boat and knows he would want to fight the Troupe as well then maybe Hisoka made himself known on purpose once everyone was on tier 3 only to escape to tier 1. He knows the Troupe, especially Chrollo, will seek him out no matter what. We already seen the Troupe not show much care for the current power structures while playing along to their rules for now. Hisoka could lead the Troupe to tier 1 and cause chaos with the defense of Tier 1 being nonexistent. That can throw off a lot in the succession war and possibly see nen beasts becoming more active in deaths If that were to happen I don’t see it happening until a few more princes die or maybe until 1st Prince dies causing his Royal guards to lax on guarding tier 1

One more thing Let’s say the Heil-ly were involved in Shiela’s death, Sarasa’s death, and planted the seeds to the Troupe that the Kurta killed Shiela leading to the Kurta massacre. With the Kurta eyes being mainly with the 4th Prince I think it makes a lot of sense that he indirectly through the mafia fed the Troupe a false story that the Kurta killed Shiela even though it was likely the mafia. They used the Troupe to get revenge on the Kurta to not have the massacre on their hands and hurt their reputation then afterwards they steal the eyes with no one knowing their involvement. Sarasa’s death is likely unplanned and just shows how sick the mafia under him are, but Shiela’s death seemed to be planned once they saw what came of the Troupe after Sarasa’s death. If the Troupe found out then will they hold that grudge towards Kurapika knowing that he only killed Uvogin based off their actions that was aimed at his family off the mafia giving false information? Could Kurapika do the same if he knew the backstory of the Troupe and how they both targeting each other only because of false information that spurred on tragedies towards each other. Heil-ly and, most importantly, 4th Prince are the source of both their tragedies, but would Chrollo or Kurapika ignore what each other did to one another to take out the 4th Prince? Even if you could justify their actions, the Troupe directly massacred the Kurta and Kurapika directly killed Uvogin, so the ones pulling the strings may not even matter to them at this point to try and work together to fight 4th Prince

Uvo isn't black, not just in anime but even in real life there are so many races that can have afros,while not being black (Berbers or amazigh/ middle easterns/Egyptians...) The better theory is that the Kuruta was part of a larger conglomeration of clans(an empire perhaps) from the Dark Continent, the positive thing known world humans can get from them is the knowledge of nen or aura manipulation, the Calamity is that they can take over the known world and kill its inhabitants since they are the only ones who had nen.. The kuruta maybe the good ones from that conglomeration who taught humans how to use nen, therefore giving humans a fighting chance, they were however, been left behind by their people due to this betrayal, and yhe humans they helped also shunned them because of the death and destruction their people inflicted.. it may also be the reason why they prefer to be hidden. They want to keep their bloodline pure and their natural affinity to nen not exploited..

That is up to Togashi, but if you want to know in 2013, he gave an interview that said that Kurapika along with the Phantom Troupe were all gonna die, it can be a joke or something serious, we only have to wait, Togashi always loves chaos in his stories and that's why he loves Hisoka so much, cause it gaves him tha chaotic element he needs, about Gon he had a conversation with his father and he mentioned he wasn't able to use nen, Ging said that when he made that pact with his nen in order to defeat Pitou he paid a prize, so in order to have nen again Ging said that another prize must be paid as well

The Nazi example only displays that you are confusing "humanization" with "justification" which aren't interchangeable in many contexts. Just to further clarify, many german soldiers were indeed humanized and met with both victims and enemies. These people came to understand each other as HUMAN but it never justified their actions in the war. Justification on the other hand is the act deeming acts just due to uncontrollable circumstance or acts rendered just by circumstance. The Uvogin, Pakunoda, Shalnark displays offered no justification but it can't be said their grief wasn't humanizing, we ALL can relate to grief.

Seeing chrollo acting a villain was a hint from togashi . Its like togashi is saying chrollo is great at actig it could fool others , he can make everyone convinced of whatever he want . Its like he wears the character hence his ability, stealing abilities . He is not a human anymore , he doesnt know what he is. He takes his idendity from his friends , the troop . One of them dying means some part of his idendity died. Once all spiders die , he will have no idendity anymore . Maybe thats what chrollo wants ... Chrollo knew that sarsa will die , he might have plotted everything , he acted worried and sad to convey that he is sad. Ofcourse we will believe him either us as readers or the young troop . He has formed the troop with a motivation that they should protect the children. Themselves as a troop. This motivation grow stronger each time one of them dies . He is seeking to create the best performance as an actor , he want to be seen , to be felt as someone with no idendity feels.he is creating a great show , a perfect show where he can controle everything . Hisoka understood his relationship to the troop , this is why he want to kill them.

To put everything into perspective: Sarasa goes out and doesn't come back, the young troupe go to look for her, when they find her in that horrible state, Out of nowhere, chrollo decides to become a villain? So what is the goal of Chrollo and the troupe now? why was this chapter so brilliant in peoples opinion? did i miss something?

Well, to the point of chrollo becoming a villain suddenly, you basically have a group of literal children and teens go through a traumatic event (more traumatizing for Chrollo since he claims responsibility for her death) and from what this series has taught us, kids love to plunge into extreme things if it means revenge/satisfaction (Gon making a super nen contract because of kite and kurapika becoming basically a mob boss to retrieve the eyes of his clan) Their plan does make sense. With how things are now, there's virtually zero way to track Sarasa's killers (Gon knows how kite died and the troupe left a note for kurapika so they had a funnel for their hatred) but the troupe had no direction, just pure hatred. Because chrollo knows/assumes they recorded their disgusting act of torture, they need a way to get them to share it, but who in their right mind would upload there crimes to the Internet...unless they had protection. Chrollo's plan isn't to track the killers down, but to bring them to him. Jaded people love congregating together, so by turning meteor city into a villain's paradise, it's like a moth following a light. However, there's a problem, if we had no leader to govern/dictate the villainous city, it would just be anarchy: killing, kidnapping, etc....well even more than there already is anyways. So chrollo not only has to turn meteor city into a villain's paradise, he has to become the dictator of the city and must be a villain that even OTHER villains are scared of. Machi awakening nen also answers the question about how the troupe learns it, including how all of the original member's powers relating to Sarasa's death in some way (like machi's needle nen for healing and repairing). Also the fact Sheila doesn't join the troupe which is what alot of people potentially thought. Sheila is either the catalyst that makes the troupe end the kurta clan, related to the princes somehow, or another hxh explanation. But my main point is the fact the troupe didn't have a funnel for their trauma and hatred, if kurapika never knew it was the troupe who ended the clan, what's to say he wouldn't have become just like chrollo.

I still believe Tserriednich was the fire that lit this whole situation on fire. In the end, Chrollo and Kurapika will find out the truth and will temporarily join forces to take him Tserriednich (Chrollo will be the only alive in the Troupe anymore at this point). The Troupe killed the Kurta because they believe the Kurta killed Satasawhen it was actually Tserriednich who killed Satasa due to his sick joy of militation and body parts. I think Kurapika will kill Sasha at the start. Then Kurapika and Chrollo will face Tserriednich. It'll be unbelievably hard to kill him; has a ridiculous grasp of nen, two nen beast, a hatsu which developed on it's own (through use zetsu of all things). We're yet to see his ability yet but I imagine it will be OP and terrible tk face. Tserriednich will be beaten but either Chroll, Kurapika, I r both will die in the process. *By the way, how do you kill Tserriednich? Two nen beast, time manipulation hatsu during Zetsu, and unknown(s) abilities. Togashi really knows how to make the craziest scenarios.

Even in the story, it doesn’t show that dynamic. Ging gives gon guidance after messing up in the CA arc (not Mito). Silva gave Killua guidance with the blood pact thing (not the mother). Just wanted to correct that, because that is not what mothers typically do. They nurture, heal, love etc. fathers lead, guide, protect and provide. Even in the CA arc at the end when that girl came back to her mom, the mom just embraced her and showed her LOVE. You're 1000% wrong about the troupe not being humanized in prior arcs. They're very humanized even just in Yorknew. Your argument for why is extremely weak too. You just give examples of them being written in very human ways and say the ones before aren't humanization and the newer ones are without justifying that difference that you claim is there. I could use your same logic to say even the flashback isn't humanization because you haven't substantiated why it's different (probably because it isn't). You might not have seen the humanization, but it was definitely there from the beginning.
