Here is a demonstration showing the versatility of self prepared chromatic black versus tubed black like an Ivory Black. Tubed black is generally one note and limits your options and you will get better color mixes with a chromatic black.

What you did with your “chromatic” mixed black…can’t we do the same with Ivory Black? Isn’t Ivory Black a deep Blue Violet? I know it isn’t a neutral black and has to be neutralized with Raw Umber to get a neutral black. Of course it’s fun to play with all kinds of “blacks”, but I’m thinking we give the actual tube blacks a bad rap-after all they are magnificent colors as well!

Yeah, people go on like you can't mix other colours into black pigments. I agree with you that different blacks are good for different reasons. I think the main thing to avoid is always darkening colours in the same way, but people do that with other colours as well as just black (a lot of people rely on burnt umber way too much for example). I used Ultramarine and Burnt Umber as my black for a few years, but I was using it as a crutch. It started to annoy me too much how quick any colour with umber in it dries though, so recently I've been mixing primaries for darks and using a bit of lamp black every now and then (it dries much slower than black that uses burnt umber), but making sure to not use it as a crutch.
