Could you please correct me if i am wrong, as far as i understand. This product helps to keep painting wet in wet ? And you could use it to opaque paint to dilute it ( create more paint when you add the medium ) but you can also use it to paint " glazerly " with semi opaque/transparant paint by adding medium to it? When adding the medium to transparant colors, will it have the same effect like a glaze but with more substance ( Transparant paint + medium )? how long does it take for it to dry? If you use it with opaque paint and with transparant, will it need different drying times?

Hello Dzastater - this will not really help with a wet over wet type of painting approach. On the contrary, this will will slightly speed up your dry times (will vary depending on the paint pigments). I have not encountered any problems regarding how much of this medium I use. So from tiny amounts to large amounts with transparent colors to create glazes. It works great as is to "oil in" over any dark areas that need get that wet look back. The best thing you can do is to get some and experiment with it - it is a great product and extremely versatile.

@@edheim87 thank you so kindly for your answer. Can i ask a few more questions? do you have any idea about the drying time? for example if you work with this medium in large chunks, how long would it take to dry? most likely faster than painting without a medium as you say that this medium speeds up the dry times. I might try it to see if i could finish a painting faster by speeding up the drying times, also i am not 100% sure if i understand you correctly on the oil in part, thank you for your time and effort to explain !

I like the asphaltum too. It seems to work when I try to use it in landscapes whereas the the others don't always work.

Can I varnish with this medium? I had an instructor who used to varnish with Liquin.
@edheim87
@edheim87 Ай бұрын
Good question. The only varnishes I have ever used are the Gamvar and Damar based products which would be the final protective layer on a painting. I have brushed over straight Neo Megilp and Liquin over finished paintings to "oil in" any matte spots that mainly develop with the darker painted areas but I will come over the whole painting with a true varnish. Remember that a varnish can be removed/melted away and redone so something like a Neo Megilp may prove to be extremely difficult, if not impossible to remove and replace with a fresh protective layer in the future.

Yup, it seems to work great! Although becomes tedious to apply to larger panels. a 40"x30" panel takes about 3 full cans and about 20 minutes of non stop spraying. When I find something better I will certainly share it.

So when painting layers with this, you never have to worry about the fat over lean rule?
@edheim87
@edheim87 4 ай бұрын
Correct - this is much easier to work with in this regard. You can also "oil in" over dark areas that cure with a lighter flat finish - going over with additional product or liquin (very similar) will restore the deep wet luster.

Flake White Replacement IS Titanium White with an additive they refuse to list to take down the tinting strength. I have it and it is not even close to Flake White. Since I don't want to use Flake White anywhere in the house I will buy Barium from Natural Pigments. You can add more Barium to your mixtures so the tinting strength is less than the Flake White Replacement. I will have to call them up to see how much you can safely add though. Flake Replacement is still chalky and dense. I also want to try Lithopone which is supposedly a safe Zinc type white paint. I like Zinc white, it just causes cracking. Maybe the Lithopone is the ticket. Natural Pigments and a few others sell Lithopone. Titanium is actually quite good with the blues. Flake White is more useful for flesh tones.

Thank you, very helpful. Most of the videos I have watched on signatures are focused on why we should sign our artwork, and I've had a hard time finding something that shows the practical aspect of mixing the pigment with the medium to reach a certain consistency for fluidity. That's what I was looking for specifically, so thank you for taking that approach.

By itself this will cure more towards a gloss finish. It can be layered up indefinitely to build up a more luxurious glossy finish.

If you use Neo Megilp as you would with real megilp, Neo Megilp will gunk up your brushes and paintings. Neo Megilp looks like real megilp but they behave nothing alike. Real megilp is a tradition recipe from centuries ago. Neo Megilp is just another modern alkyd based medium like Liquin - and much stickier.

What you did with your “chromatic” mixed black…can’t we do the same with Ivory Black? Isn’t Ivory Black a deep Blue Violet? I know it isn’t a neutral black and has to be neutralized with Raw Umber to get a neutral black. Of course it’s fun to play with all kinds of “blacks”, but I’m thinking we give the actual tube blacks a bad rap-after all they are magnificent colors as well!

Yeah, people go on like you can't mix other colours into black pigments. I agree with you that different blacks are good for different reasons. I think the main thing to avoid is always darkening colours in the same way, but people do that with other colours as well as just black (a lot of people rely on burnt umber way too much for example). I used Ultramarine and Burnt Umber as my black for a few years, but I was using it as a crutch. It started to annoy me too much how quick any colour with umber in it dries though, so recently I've been mixing primaries for darks and using a bit of lamp black every now and then (it dries much slower than black that uses burnt umber), but making sure to not use it as a crutch.

You forgot to demo how you remove the coil to clean the jar. I find it very difficult. ALL odorless mineral spirits are toxic to lungs and skin. Read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Always wear nitrile gloves when handling turps and paint.

Just signed up to an Ian Roberts brushwork course, having completed his composition course. He recommends one of these and I was not sure what a ‘turps tank’ was as I have not seen them in the UK. I have seen the video and am now enlightened. I can see it does a very useful job and will maintain good brushes. Many thanks.

With me my go to to make my Black is from Alzarin Crimson and Phthalo Green because that's how Bob Ross made his black and that is how I was introduced in how to make Black. However I might try your method of making black from Ultimarine Blue and some kind of brown such as Asphaultm.

You can also make black with ultramarine blue and burnt sienna or burnt umber. I also sometimes use your mix. It depends on the other colors in the painting.

The silicoil jar is quite expensive $10 about $11 & change with tax ( I live in a tax state) & I was hesitant to buy it at first, but I was successfully convinced to purchase it after watching KZbin demos. It lived up to my expectations once I tried & used it for myself. I consider the silicoil jar to be worth the price tag, it's a very useful little invention that will prolong the lifespan of (in my case $$$ pricy) paint brushes. 🛢 Oil painting is a steep $$$ hobby in general bc supplies canvases,brushes,oil paints, mineral spirts & everything in relation to oil painting is a costly luxury & privilege hence, taking the best care possible of those high-quality paint brushes only makes sense.🖌 🖌 🎨👩🏻‍🎨🖼
