That F 22 looks like an experiment to determine just how effective an unpainted stealth aircraft can be without its coating. Cost savings? They only want it to be partially stealthy to mimic another plane like a Russian or Chinese Stealth attempt? Who knows?

*The chrome like coating reminds me of the ww2 bombers , the reason why they coated those bombers was to disguise them from ground AA defenses, flying high and the reflection would simulate the sun flash.*
@slickstrings3 жыл бұрын
No WW2 aircraft especially not bombers were chrome coated. It is simply polished bare aluminium. There were several reasons for this. Paint adds weight, and every kg counts. Time. bombers especially needed to be churned out at a high pace and moved to theater. keeping them for weeks to paint was a burden which at high altitude was seen as un-necessary towards the end of the war. Speed. A polished bare skin aircraft is faster due to skin friction than a matt camo paint job. Both fighters and bombers benefitted from this. There is no conceivable way that 'simulating' the suns reflection would be practical or even a good idea. Besides highlighting your position, how could you reliably fly at the correct angles to reflect the sun towards the intended audience? Not to mention that the sun would also be in a different position in the sky at the same time.

@Herkfixer13 жыл бұрын
It's not necessarily a "chrome" paint job or anything experimental. Often planes fresh out of refurb or depot have no paint, just bare metal until paint and tail flash can be scheduled. If it was something "experimental", it would likely be taking off from Edwards not Nellis. Not saying that's what it is but it's much more likely since it is still painted on several critical surfaces and only non-critical areas are bare.
@TheNellisSpotter3 жыл бұрын
It’s not chrome. But it’s also not bare metal. If you see the close up pics on Instagram these are mirror like panels. Nellis has had plenty of “experimental” aircraft take off from here.

F-22 apparently bare without radar absorbing coating. I wonder if they were testing how much just the shape of the aircraft provided stealth. Beautiful photography, by the way.
@rogerbiggerstaff32933 жыл бұрын
More likely it's a new coating being tested. They've done considerable testing of the shape's RCS/IR reduction signature, years ago.
