Chrome Inlay Trim Install on the 86 Cutlass

Olds Guy's Garage: In this episode I am swapping out the lower chrome inlay trim in the front bumper of the 86 Cutlass for a new piece. In this video, my first attempt did not go well as the trim I had did not want to press into the bumper. fortunately I had a roll of other trim I bought years ago and used that. I think that was 3/8 half round chrome trim that you were trying to use at first. That's probably 1/4 half round chrome trim that you end with, the one that actually worked

Unfortunately both were stored in my basement so Im guessing I had a problem installing one of them in the past. I do however remember buying a kit off of ebay that I believe did work. The kits on ebay for this trim were sky high like 200$ at the time of this video. Somewhere in the video I did call out the widths, i think the one that worked was 5/16. My guess is it is really measured in millimeters.

I don't. I know I've seen similar trim in O'Reilly's or advance auto. I think there is a guy on ebay selling a kit but it's way too much.

I need to replace probably all of these strips on both bumpers, and I did one of the rear sections years ago then quit because scraping out the old tape was just a nightmare. I really want to get back to replacing the rest of it, but I have a question - I recall the strip I replaced having metal tabs that each end were attached to, which then clipped into the bumper. Are these necessary? I mean, if the trim is held on by tape regardless if it's to the bumper itself or the metal clip, what's the difference? Also, while we're talking trim - I had also made my own version of the bodyside trim pieces since properly formed pieces aren't available. Naturally, the "chrome" edges are peeling just like the original had. Is there any fix for this, or any reproductions of the original, correctly-cut pieces out there?

Great question. I really only remember metal tabs on the rear bumper. Those i did reuse for sure. Not sure if you can bend the chrome inlay trim up and around that section of the rear bumper. I think the metal clip provides an ease of installation as well as insuring the trim doesnt want to pop out because of too many tight bends. great question too on the bodyside trim pieces, I am not familiar with but always liked the look. i almost took them off a parts car back in the day when wifey and i would go out junkin but I did not have the tabs welded on my car to accept those nice looking trim pieces. I do not know of a fix for pealing chrome. Only thing I can think of off the cuff, is to use 0000 steel wool to knock edge down and topcoat section with an automotive clearcoat to lock things down.

I wish I knew. LOl. it may have been from the local advance auto parts. The chrome strips that worked were in my basement for who knows how long. Ive seen other chrome strip for sale on ebay and boy is it pricey.
