As someone who replaced my Mac with an iPad mini, I would offer that the difference maker for a tablet is the ability to use apps. Of course, those apps also need to be optimized for that tablet. At home I have a Bluetooth keyboard that’s more comfortable. I actually dictate everything and then go back and make any necessary corrections. It’s perfection, for me.
@mini95033 жыл бұрын
Same here. Another big factor for me also was that good quality iPad apps are often cheaper than Mac apps, and usually don't force you into the awful subscription model. Was pleasantly surprised at how good Tablets are as a daily driver and a work productivity device after my switch.

All you did was replace your laptop with your tablet. His whole point was that there isn't a case where you need a laptop, tablet and a phone. All your needs are met by just two of those devices. He prefers using a laptop + phone combo while you prefer a tablet + phone combo. In the end both of you have a device left over that you don't need have any use for.

This review was good until the end where he mentioned the "jitteriness" of the X2 .. while showing fluid gameplay and multitasking? I'm confused why no laggy game was shown if it was that slow. Instead, the golf game looked like it ran at a smooth 30+ fps and Call of Duty looked like it had no issues. If it couldn't run above low settings, why didn't you show that instead of showing it running at a smooth 30+ fps at low settings?

I have been hoping to see a new generation of Chrome OS tablets from Google. I know they said they were leaving that arena but I still hoped they or someone else would bring out a new device that could compare to my Pixel Slate. Sadly no one has come close. I don't feel my Slate is too large as it makes watching videos (with its excellent speakers) a joy. My i5 8 gig model doesn't lag or stutter. And it made a wonderful companion on a cross-country train trip this past summer. I had hopes for this HP but It just doesn't have enough grunt. Thanks, Robbie for another excellent review. IMO, very nice review. I actually bought this computer based on this channels most recent videos on this device and I got lucky to get it at the $399 price point. TBH.....I love it and I haven't experienced any of the shortcomings mentioned in this video. When I use the cursive app, i experience zero (0) lag when I write with the pen. I watch a lot of tech review videos, and I think Robby may be experiencing what so many other tech reviewers may have and that's what I call "review fatigue." That is when a reviewer has reviewed too many products, particularly of the same type, he or she tends to get a little over-nit picky over details. But all in all, I think this was a very good review. I actually bought the cheaper (older) Lenovo Duet Chromebook for $169, but returned it for this $399 Chromebook. My advice for people is to go and buy this from a retailer, that offers free and easy returns, and try it out. If you don't like, just return it. I know that for me, I won't. Then again, YMMV.

I'm a user of the original HP X2, and I was really desapointed with this new version. And you confirmed all of my grips with this device. I really wish they went with the sane concept of the original, but beefier specs, fingerprint scanner, USI stylus and keyboard light. That would be a killer chromebook.
@Mounta1nKing3 жыл бұрын
Agree, the original X2 is still the best 2-in-1 chromebook out there. It came with the great keyboard and stylus, and same specs of the base Slate for the same price as the Slate sans keyboard/stylus, and did so two years earlier. I was so disappointed that the Slate wasn't really an upgrade over the X2 and cost considerably more. I guess I expected some progress over two years. I wish they had just updated the X2 at some point as well. Backlit keyboard and bit more ram would be nice. It bogs a little with over 30 tabs open, and some Android apps still don't really run well on ChromeOS and bog it down. The smaller screen in this is a real letdown as well, basically makes it useless as a tablet.

Interesting insight. I mainly use a PC and I also have a laptop (work-issued). I'm looking into tablets because I miss having one (Nexus 7 2013 was my first smart device ever). I find that a tablet, like the phone, is a very pickup and play device in contrast to Laptops and PCs. I really want to get simple work (writing documents, reading for work, PowerPoint presentation designs, etc.) done in the tablet. I do believe it's really possible. And I want to utilize it without the need for a keyboard actually. The problem isn't the tablet itself, it's the UI of some apps. I'm looking at the Xiaomi Pad 5 because it's highly accessible in my area and it costs way less. I think my only issue with that tablet, as a work device, is that its usb-c doesn't support external displays which would've been great for PowerPoint presentations. Yeah, it can be casted but sometimes, internet is a real struggle in some areas.

Great review Robby; well worth the wait and still excited to see how you enjoyed the HP Chromebase too! Speaking on behalf of a viewer whom came from the Samsung Chromebook Plus to this 11 X2 is going from a budget yet sleek device to a more premium midrange sleek setup. Typing this review on the keyboard is a joy to write though I will say sometimes the trackpad does get stuck or catches a miss touch. Love that this screen is of great quality and 3:2. Performance can be plucky but you can still get the job done with few moments of saying, I can't get my day to day task done; very thankful that there's 8GB of RAM. Battery performance while running KZbin all day, can get me through a 9 to 5 session. Android Apps will be some hit or miss; for example, don't expect to run the Yahoo Sports app to watch the football game while browsing; it will stop the video. Overall package is really great; especially with 3:2 and a Fingerprint reader seem to be a rare find within the Chromebook world. One additional note I will say is that the speakers could be louder and have more bass but I appreciate that they are clear and forward facing too.

Your review piqued my interest. This is where I'm coming from: I'm using a 13.3-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS touchscreen Lenovo Flex 5 / 10th gen Core i3 / 8 GB Ram / 128 GB eMMC / which I bought on sale for $350 on the last hour of its being on sale at Costco. Great purchase! I'm looking to add a tablet + keyboard device for light amounts of work at coffee shops, etc. (I'm one of the few people who really didn't care for the Duet. Things just felt too crowded for my taste.) The thought of paying MORE for a work tablet than my main device doesn't sit well with me. Hopefully, they'll go on sale for Christmas. One of my favorite HP laptops was a 16:9 aspect / 11.6" diagonal. Loved that smaller screen size with full sized keyboard. Looking forward to having a 3:2 aspect screen at 2160x1440 resolution in a light package. The screen alone might justify paying more than I did for my Flex 5.

Absolutely fabulous chromebook/tablet review. I'm thinking of getting the 128GB version of the x2, apparently only available from HP (unless you count the ridiculous prices on eBay). My motivation is to see how well Linux mode supports my uses, and I want the extra storage. I want a decent Linux tablet where all the hardware including the camera is supported. Here's the problem: HP hasn't discounted that one, it's still 699. And before you say Jingpad A1, it's not there yet.

@Joseph Sakata thanks for the warning. What specifically is the problem with running the Linux mode. Not taking issue with what you said, just trying to avoid buying a tablet whose Linux mode that won't really do what I wanted it to. Performance? Lack of support for some aspect of the hardware, like the webcam? Lack of support for the SD slot?

To follow up, I did get the 8GB/128GB version, and was mostly happy with the result. I was looking for a decent detachable that ran both Chrome or Android, AND some form of Linux. I have to say that the Linux container surprised me. I configured a container at 70 GB, mostly because I have huge config directories for some UNIX/Linux desktop clients that I've been using for decades. The desktop clients, including Thunderbird, Firefox, emacs, Synaptic and Libreoffice, ran well, with excellent graphics (much better than any emulation I could run on high end Samsung S7 tablet), and I couldn't fault the performance. The command shell environment was recognizable Debian, including the apt and apt-get package management. I'm done with this tablet now because I discovered that I needed more than 128 GB total to support all my favorite apps. I thought I might be able to extend the filesystem to the external SD card, but although I could read and write individual files to the card - and I tried several cards - some desktop programs hung on the external storage, as did rsync -av and cp -r when I tried directory copies. I still think this is a great detachable if you want to mix Chrome/Android and Linux and don't have a need for lots of disk space.

Bit disappointed that Snapdragon 7c landed on the shorter side. Great detailed review! I'm going to wait for the Lenovo Duet 5 stores for me, and see how Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 performs on that machine.

If this had a stronger CPU that makes the OS work fluidly, i would have been a pick up for me. Cause that literally the only thing I dont like about my Duet. I love the duet, Id just wish there were a "premium" option/alternative to it.

Hi Rob! Did you noticed that on the latest update Google redesigned a little bit the keyboard on tablet mode? I think it was really needed because I actually haven't used my Duet that much in tablet mode due to that very uncomfortable virtual keyboard, the new one is not perfect but at least is way better than before.

It looks like the kind of thing I'd go for to throw in my backpack when I go out for a beer, but the Lenovo Duet is a much better size for me. I'm looking at all the new devices coming out with a similar form factor and I still don't regret not waiting. The Duet hands down beats any Android tablet I've had.

I found an open box version in excellent like-new condition at Best Buy for around $350 + tax. Since the sale just ended, I believe Best Buy forgot to update the price of the open boxes. They will price match if you ask. Just a heads up for anyone else looking for a great deal but missed the sale.

The Samsung tab S7 is really great. I have one myself. I use Android all the time, and often use the Dex mode. I even use andronix to run Debian linux. However, this linux, like all other Android tablets with Linux emulators, does not give you access to all the tablet hardware. My apologies if I'm straying too far off topic here.

@@NateBraska what are your thoughts one the lenovo duet 5
@NateBraska3 жыл бұрын
@@cobaltblue5523 I think it's a very interesting but worried about the specific parts like the speakers and speed. I recently got the Samsung Tab S7 Plus and it's great with speakers, speed, and 120hz screen. But the Samsung UI, android mobile browser limitations, and cost of the additional keyboard case, really are a drawback. Overall, I think if you want a tablet + keyboard and like/don't mind Chome OS, the Lenovo Duet 5 has some solid value if you can find it on sale. But if screen, speed, or TBD speaker quality are a priority, then it might not be worth it compared to the S7 Plus or even S7 FE, especially with recent trade-in sales. I'm a big fan of chrome OS and with the included keyboard case, the Lenovo Duet 5 is very tempting, but $500 still seems a bit high. Around $380 with good speakers, and I'd try one. Maybe it will have sales like its older, littler brother.

Johnny, have you used a Surface Pro much? Because your comments about how this is used, are a inherent in the design. The Surface Pro is an established form factor so people will know this buying the X2 11. It's negatives are well understood by now.
@andyH_England3 жыл бұрын
Sales of the Surface Pro have declined over the last two years as people realise that it looks cool but the form factor is compromised to some extent. This form factor has been on the peripheral for many years but never mainstream as it is simply sub-par, a Windows hybrid and I suspect that will be the same problem Chrome faces. The iPad and Tab S were designed from the ground up to be tablets that could function with a keyboard, Window and Chrome need are laptops at heart and compromised as a tablet and laptop due to trying to be both. I think Apple and Samsung have proven that separate devices for each is the best solution and those wanting an all in one will just end up with a second rate tablet and laptop.

I used to have a chromebook x2. After maybe a couple of weeks the screen stopped working and I got it replaced with a chromebook duet 3. I mean it still feels like im using the HP but yknow this Lenovo is really better than the chromebook x2 because I am pretty sure it didn't pass one test. To be fair I could have gotten a screen replacement on my x2 but I still love my duet as I use it for school with the same as before x2. HP did do a good job but there are a few things wrong with it. Tablet laptop duo is the way to go!
