Hi Ilan, thanks for this video, it's something close to my heart too. Illnesses, disabilities, injuries, mental health struggles and addictions can be a martial artist's biggest teachers - attackers who can't be escaped from or beaten through force. I know aikido has a bad rep but for me, these personal struggles are where never meeting force directly has really paid off. I can't beat my problems by kicking their ass - I've needed to learn to collaborate with my "attacker" through kindness, because it's my own body and mind, always waiting for me wherever I am. Much of the martial arts world is founded on ideas of being able. I got into martial arts because of not being able - in ways I didn't understand as a teenager but learned about myself through training and practice. Nowadays I'm the dad of a 16 year old daughter who has type 1 diabetes (autoimmune, cells in the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system and stop producing insulin) and I see once again how much my daughter has grown and expanded her capabilities as a human being through carrying and essentially learning how to love (not like) this condition that would kill her if she ignored or resisted it. This is why for me there is so much more to martial arts than just being able to fight or defend yourself. All of us will get ill, injured, older, weaker, senile and die - it's inescapable. These are the true tests of what it means to have a warrior spirit. Finding the strength to carry on even when the situation is dire or likely to be terminal. It sounds corny to say, but I am still alive so far because of this deeper lesson of martial arts - which wasn't the lesson I went looking for but the lesson I was taught by my body. Bless you man for opening up and thanks again for making this video! 🙏

Beautifully stated and a truly inspiring insight in to the value of martial arts and the need to not resist but to accept which as you said is very aikido like as a philosophy

I appreciate this vid, and you’re spot on. I’ve had RA for 15 years, and survived a really nasty lung cancer diagnosis last year. Chronic pain will eat your lunch if you let it. Psychoneuroimmunology research tells us that your attitude is everything, because being stressed out will tank your immune system. Negative emotions can increase your pain response as well. If I focus on gratitude and happiness, I feel better. If I let the pain get to me, it becomes a downward spiral, and the pain increases. Same thing with the cancer diagnosis. The docs didn’t even want to remove the tumor, because my chances of survival were so low. They’d rather have given that surgery slot to someone with a greater chance of survival. My background is in healthcare, so I could tell that none of my docs expected me to make it. A year later they started telling me I was the exception to the rule when it came to cancer patients with that diagnosis. I just fought and fought and fought. My life became an obsession with surviving cancer. I lived, by the grace of God. Daily training, same thing. Sure, I hurt. Sure, I can’t train like I used to before I had cancer and lost part of my lung. I still train. You do what you can, and you keep going. That is all.

I did not know how I was going to come out of it and if I would be able to continue to train. Went through some serious soul searching and adjustments, but can happily say I am back doing what I love 3 years later. It was great putting simple and easy quotes on the screen in text. I particularly like the quote "You are not the thing that you do." I've had issues with self-identity and self-worth. I love martial arts, but I'm more into geeking out about it than training. So to explain to people that it's my hobby I feel I would be judged harshly for not being that good. It's a rather awkward thing, but there is no reason I should change if I am still enjoying it and getting some fulfilment.
@inside_fighting2 ай бұрын
What other people think doesn’t matter as long as it’s fulfilling to you. There are people who dedicate their lives to the historical aspects of martial arts. It’s a fascinating world in my opinion and there’s so much to uncover about how ancient civilizations functioned through how they fought.

Keep sharing the message. I've been through similar stuff and I will totally steal the "hand raised" analogy. There were times I had to squeeze every drop of energy out of my body to be able to go and train. Others just came happily full of energy, I did everything with a handicap. Even as an instructor back then. People usually don't recognize it. Only if they get to know you better. Pushing oneself like that is unbelievably exhausting sometimes. So to keep raising awareness for mental and autoimmmune challenges is very important for all of us. I'm just fighting my way out of a hard setback again. Started with some light training. And I know it won't be the last time. But I'm prepared to pull me out over and over again. Love out, stay strong, all of you - and learn to distinguish when "being strong" just doesn't cut it anymore and other options work a lot better. :)

My father escaped communist Cuba and majority of my family are also immigrants and are tough minded as hell, and it took years for them to even understand what was going on and why he's acting different and why we don't see him anymore. I can only imagine the chronic stress and pain from something like an autoimmune disease and then with the loss of your leg and the fear that was thrusted upon you sir. You took it stride and stand as an example to everyone dealing with injuries, illness, or the trepedations of life that weigh upon us all especially for these more complex issues that are only now getting the attention they deserve. Looking forward to getting back into martial arts.

At the present moment I ambulate with a walker, my balance is not so good and kicking is quite impossible. Sometimes I feel kind sad thinking all the things that I was able to do and I cannot do anymore. Getting in a downward spiral is very easy. I doubt myself many times if I still belong to be in a tatami and if quitting will be easier. At the same time, I really understand the spirit of martial arts, like fighting until the very end. My adversary is not not a physical one, but it is inside me, like fear, hopeless and the feeling of quitting. Apologies for the long comment, but your video really touched me inside.

Man this is a really valuable video. I started improving my mental health as a teenager because even though I didn't grow up with a father in the household, or any figure in the household, I still pursued mentors until my mom did remarry but he eventually passed away and at that point I was old enough to work full time and take care of the bills for a couple of years. Some people wait until they're 40s or 50s to start worrying about their mental health but this video itself is just a good concept of taking care of yourself as a person, not being attached to your identity but simply being in reality. Things always work out in the end so there's realistically nothing to worry about unless you don't know how to make plans. I hope this video is a big hit and is one of your most popular videos

This video's topic came as a bit of a surprise, but not an unwelcome one. I've dealt with mental health issues for pretty much all of my life. What you said is something I've encountered in Stoicism (but is present in other forms of mindfulness): the ideas that our expectations can be poisonous, that what we consider important to us (like being tough and good at fighting) can be taken away, and that a bad day inherently isn't permanent. All time-tested lessons that pop up across cultures. Thanks.

@@inside_fighting It definitely has some practical exercises that could be useful as a supplement to what you've come to already believe. I'd recommend Massimo Pigliucci's How to Be a Stoic. It's more accessible than reading the texts he draws upon (which themselves are in either Hellenistic Greek or Roman Latin I believe). For me personally, Stoicism is nice because it's not religious in the way a lot of other mindfulness traditions are. Hope you have a good day, Ilan!

The truth is disability, illness, depression and death eventually touches all of us and the people we care about. Thanks for sharing because, you aren’t alone and anyone else here isn’t alone. There is always someone out there who can relate and share the burden. It might be harder for some people to find their community but it’s out there and you are showing that by posting this. Great message about identity as well. This video is a service to the community.

I needed to watch and listen to this. 2 years ago i had surgery on my spinal cord was 5 of my vertebra was crushed in my neck severely restricting my spinal cord that was getting no spinal fluid there. I like you was told 6 months i would be paraplegic without any use in my arms or legs. Told i could die from the operation. Me and my wife looked the consultant in the eye and said do it. Took me 18 months to recover. I can walk over 5 miles with a 20kg weighted vest. I have gone back with restrictions to my kadichnikov systema training. Yes i am restricted. Am i disabled yes but like you said neuroplascity has taught me another way. Make sure you have good postive people around you. My two martial art instructors would come walking with me even if it was 500yards at first. Never ever fucking give up

I have psoriasis, too. It's in all my finger and toe nails, and looks like a fungal infection. Very embarrassing, and I won't train barefoot (the toes look worse). That and an old knee injury limit me quite a bit. Good to hear you talk about you're own issues- they sound worse than mine, so it gives me cause for a little more optimism.

My joint issues developed because of psoriatic arthritis which develops from psoriasis but the pitting in the nails is so common with psoriasis and annoying as hell i agree. Hope you are doing well

I can't recommend enough to eat an incredibly clean diet to help with this. Nothing with chemicals. Carnivore if you can handle it or keto-vore and stay off processed food. Eat real meats, actual human plant foods (roots, tubers, fruits) and drink water. My psoriasis is vastly improved when I stop eating chemical-rich over-processed foods.

Excellent points & advice. Thank you for being transparent. This will help a lot of people. Regarding the Autoimmune Diseases 2 things-1. Qigong has shown to be very effective & 2. early onset of the disease there is a chance it may be related to ancestral trauma. Many indications the AI disease is rooted in PTSD via genetically transmitted trauma. Something to look into. Peace Health & Blessings

@Ilhan, have you tried keto or carnivore diet yet? It helps me. This is your best video yet. My identity was defined by being a professional elite Soldier and martial artist. So losing health & abilities due to injuries took a massive toll. Then losing my only son after 14 years crushed me. But my faith in the gospel of Christ Jesus has sustained me thus far. You're in my prayers Ilhan.

Thanks for sharing. I have fallen in love with your channel. My wife of 32 years was diagnosed with MS in 2016. At the beginning of 2023, a lump arose in her breast virtually overnight - stage 2 triple negative breast cancer. That led to 16 weeks of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, followed within 3 days of snapping her right ankle into a 90 degree angle and requiring yet another major surgery 2 days later. The chemo further weakened her in her MS, so she is diminished physically. We understand.

@@timkittle5418 thank you. I’m sorry you are both going through that. My cousin has stage four terminal breast cancer and it’s brutal. There are so many new treatments in that space that there is always hope for her. Something i learned is just how hard caretaking is and what a toll it can take as well. Make you are taking care of yourself as well so that you can continue to help her as you clearly do. Wishing you both the best.

Thanks for the honesty. We are all aging and getting or will get some sort of illness. The overlap between martial arts and medicine does not get as much social media attention as other topics. I’m a neurologist and long time hobbyist martial artist. I would be fascinated to hear a more detailed description of your illness. I’m sure it was best to leave some things out of the video. You can always email me off-line happy to provide informal professional opinion if it’s of any assistance.

Glad things are improving for you. I sort of know how you feel in a way. Allow me to share my own anecdote. I had skin issues most of my adult life(severe dandruff and persistent skin lesions). I never could get any answers about it even from the most learned individuals with fancy papers on their walls and white coats. Eventually, and relatively recently, I self-diagnosed myself with tons of food allergies. I lost tons of weight and my skin issues disappeared. I still run into new allergies, though. If this sounds like you, give yourself a strict diet(I recommend rice, potatoes, and eggs) for a few days and see what happens. I shed a curse of over 20 years.

It’s funny how many people think being a strong warrior automatically makes you healthy. I’ve probably never been healthy my entire life. Perseverance is definitely a personality trait I have. My performance as an athlete has changed, sometimes better or sometimes worse, but the objective is always to become a better warrior irrespective of the athletic performance. As for identity, always look towards Christ. The good Lord strengthens His warriors, and all His faithful servants to achieve His will here on earth. Look at Saint Nester of Thessaloniki who defeated the gladiator Lyaeus. Even Saint Sampson, king David, Saint Michael the Archangel, Saint Prince Alexander of Nevsky, or so many more. We can always turn to the Saints who are friends of Christ in our times of need. Of course, we must never forget that our main objective is to enter the Heavenly Kingdom. This is spiritual warfare. The devil and the demons will attack everyone who draws closer to Him. Endure to the very end as good warriors of Christ.

I'm still waiting on the neurologist to tell me why my arm randomly goes numb. I'm eager to get back into what I want to do. I'm getting told by every lupus sufferer that I have lupus because of the rash all over my face, and my joints feel and sound like they need replaced a lot. And I am constantly tired and my fuse might as well be a flash. Thanks for the reminder.
@inside_fighting2 ай бұрын
That sounds a bit like lupus if the rash is butterfly shaped. I get the butterfly rash and very swollen joints and numbness and it was psoriatic arthritis
@whim62872 ай бұрын
@@inside_fighting The rash is just tiny dots, often dry skin. The joints issues are just abuse, I did some rodeo stuff and more than my share of car wrecks on top of martial arts. So far x-rays, MRIs ect show no nerve restriction. The plus side is that strength and dexterity seem to be unaffected by numbness.
