Fear is the enemy of faith. Fear causes your muscles to tighten. Fear causes you to doubt your abilities as a musician. Let's face it, if someone is playing a guitar or other instrument and there is a mistake, the musician playing that particular instrument can blame the instrument. When you are singer your voice is your instrument. There is nothing to hide behind.

My vocal cords have been strained for two years and the doctors have confirmed that I have no infections in my throat. I was prescribed a vocal rest and oral reeducation but these have not really helped

So I guess a cold would make a voice hoarse. Singing and adding grunts makes it hoarse, too.

Yes, cold can affect the clarity of voice. Singing with a voice that is already compromised can add to the problem. Grunts may also be harsh on a voice that maybe requires TLC at this time.
