I think that’s the most important part. Art literally says: “coach me”, then Tashi says: “i’m gonna leave you”, and then she says “does that really works?” For me, it’s a way that Art can manipulate the situation all over again, because after the affair, Tashi looks Art sharing the bed with their duaghter. A cold reminder that she’s risking everything just to “coach” Art.

i have challengers brain rot, it has consumed me body and soul. i see a lot of theories that lily is actually patrick’s and not art’s and like, i see where you guys are coming from, but that just doesn’t track with who tashi is. she feels like a woman that TRACKS her cycle and made a concious choice to have a child. the only unpredictable thing in her life was her knee injury, she HAS to be in control. an unplanned pregnancy with patrick just doesn’t sit with me. her and art PLANNED lily and i won’t be convinced otherwise.
@thiswolffbites

@@mulkiabdi3081 “our daughter” as in “me and art’s daughter”, not hers and patrick’s. i know one can infer that, but it’s very common to say “this is our child” when introducing a child to a third party. does not make that child the product of the third party, if that makes sense. it would also be incredibly out of character for patrick to NOT say anything about lily’s paternity to art. he was so pissed off that tashi was going behind his back to try and get patrick to throw the game so art could win. doubt he would let a lie as big as “your child is not your child” slide, regardless of how manipulative the 3 of them are. he would have tried to weasel his way into their relationship earlier if he knew lily was his. she’s also never brought up again between the two (tashi and patrick) because lily is not his.

Patrick reminded me of Gatsby in the way he kept forgetting that Tashi had a kid because that messed with his idea of her. It also shows how he's a child. People grow and change, especially having children. He can't give a crap.

patrick flipping off art was actually him signaling where he wanted art to serve. it’s very common for doubles players at the net to use hand signals behind their back in order to communicate to their partner (who’s serving) a plan to start the point. in this instance, patrick was telling art to serve to the middle of the service box.

I just realised - during the last match, when Art and Patrick are finally playing real tennis, there are close shots of their knees/legs in the exact same lunge that ended with Tashi's injury. She lost her focus because of her fight with Patrick, but they GAINED their focus after their "fight". They thrive in competition with each other.

I saw the ending as Patrick finally showing Art he doesnt need Tashis validation and see the embrace and smile as a moment of freedom between the only 2 people who actually cared about eachother in the entire movie. Tashi screams because its good tennis but she also has the freedom of not being a god to this man anymore. Great vid as always 👌
@i_ate_an_ant

I love this take! I've never seen anyone else saying this. I always thought part of why Art needs Patrick is because he needs affection and Tashi doesn't seem to want affection in the same way Art does, but Patrick is overflowing with affection for Art. And with Tashi I love that - she does not have to be a god to this man anymore. I actually think that's a key part of why she's into Patrick, everyone including Art sees her as this genius prodigy tennis player and stellar coach, and Art literally says she's Jesus to him, but Patrick sees her as a fucked up person she is. So now that Art is validated in his need for affection and Tashi is validated in her need to be seen as human, they can both be more authentic with each other.
@Toribell1928
@Toribell1928 3 ай бұрын
Yeah there’s that scene where Art says “I’m playing for the both of us” and then Tashi says “I’ll leave you if you lose, does that help you?” Like she clearly is sick of this role she’s playing as his passion or motivation (and she’s also not anymore since he’s been losing and I think she senses that) so I think her “Come on!” is definitely her being set free (also Art and Patrick’s passions being reignited)

I do find it interesting that Tashi says multiple times in the beginning of the movie that she doesn't want to be a "homewrecker" and that she doesn't want someone to be in love with her, but by the middle of the film, she's asking Art if he's still in love with her then cheats on Art twice. 🙃

I mean, the three of them act awafully as each others friends but imo Tashi takes it to the next level by going to her CHILD bedroom to watch her sleep knowing what shes about to do will destroy the family, and does it anyways! When Art wakes up and goes to the childs bedroom Tashi is sleeping with the lil girl, she cant bear the guilt and refuses to sleep with his husband. Art is already pretty much out of the picture, its mother and daughter now

as someone who grew up in the professional tennis wolrd ( i'm fifth generation but i'm the art kid lol , but my brother has a scholarship because of tennis) it's a real thing what they were doing with both Patrick and Art . Patrick is what they called the born talent , players who have the spirit and enough talent to bullshit around because it works, they adapt quickly but they are hard to control because they don't listen and get frustated quickly (tashi saying that patrick falls apart in the second set is very accurate for this kind of players ) and also talent is not all , technique always comes into play in later years. Art is the technique player, what they lack in passion they excel in technique , they are cold with the game which is great because it keeps you focus on the next set rather than staying angry with the last, but because they lack that passion sometimes they fall behind to the passionate players that will rather DIE than loose the match Tashi is the perfect player, technique combine with passion. She is cold on her technique but passionate with her game.

I think that Tashi was authentic and was clear about her feelings for him and her feelings for tennis. While she and Patrick can be unlikable, I think Art was sneaky and conniving, which I respect less. What he did in college was bad, yeah, but I disagree that it ended there. I think the movie hints at him doing nefarious things to keep Tashi around even though they both know she doesn't care for him. Like proposing to her with his grandmother's ring when his grandma was on her death bed so Tashi would have to say yes or how, after Atlanta, suddenly they have a child together (I think holes were poked). They mentioned how he plays percentage tennis, which is waiting it out until another player messes up and then swooping in. And I think that philosophy applies to all parts of his life.

another thing to note is when art looks PISSED after patrick serves normally its not just because he slept with tashi but because he has been able to and is able to serve normally, he just chooses to do his wack ass little serve. to art, at least he had a better serve than patrick but he doesnt even actually have that. also patrick at the end choosing to do the racket move again is 100% because of the churro scene and how he loved seeing that fire in art when he was jealous and how he said “thats whats missing from your tennis” so he brought it to his tennis. fucking love this film

Tashi says in the beginning “Tennis is a relationship” and that’s just the synopsis for the movie
@jessicahartgrove6931
@jessicahartgrove6931 3 ай бұрын
No one is talking about the context in which Tashi says she's going to leave Art if he doesn't win tomorrow. She immediately follows it by asking if that's what he needs to hear. I think they're two people who are exhausting all of their options, trying to ignite a figurative fire in Art and nothing is working. I really do think that Tashi loves Art, but their symbiotic relationship only works if he fulfils what she sees as her spoiled prophecy
@white_v
@white_v 3 ай бұрын
OK NO because I've heard someone else describing the final scene as "they both jump for the ball and collide" but Patrick doesn't jump, **he drops the tennis racket in order to catch Art** Like. Not only is it a beautiful, renaissance painting like shot, but you could also tie that into your point about how "Patrick has a passion for Art" and that in the end, Art shows some goddamn backbone and ignites a fury inside himself, and both Tashi and Patrick see it - see Art playing Real Tennis -- and Patrick drops his racket, choosing Art over tennis (?) Idk idk but that finale has been engraved in my memory, the jump, the slow mo, and the "COME ON"... ✨Cinema✨

17:26 When talking about her parents not wanting her coming-of-age in "an environment like that" (so preppy, upper class, maybe even gender-segregated to some extent boarding school with majority white attenders), I think Tashi definitely meant her parents were scared of her sticking out or being the other when attending a school like that.

a small detail you didn’t mention- Patrick tells Helen (tinder date) that if he wins the challenger he’ll qualify for the open. So he’d be giving that opportunity up if he let Art win, although idk if he could just play another challenger

The Aston Martin billboard holds so many different plot points. I think I remember at one point we see the billboard where it’s called down a bit over Art’s face, and this later we see the billboard fixed, which parallels Art’s arc through the movie as well

I watched this movie three times, and each time I watched I felt like Tashi is less toxic as I originally thought. She cheats on Art twice (which is awful), but she makes it known from the beginning that she'll always love tennis more than any person, and Art knew that. 🤷🏾‍♀️
@dreamslove1184
@dreamslove1184 3 ай бұрын
Loving tennis more than a person doesn't mean that you have to cheat. Now people don't tend to notice how tashi tend to cheat when she is shown in a vulnerable state,she is always shown sad before always ,one with watching anna Mueller and then art 's conversation in the hotel room. Those moments are always shown as something is in turnmoil,dark.

also, idk if you pointed this out but in the order of the movie, when they're playing the match, patrick is winning when they intersplice the scenes of him getting with tashi, and then when art gets with tashi, art is winning the game, so at the end they both end up winning bc they both get with tashi & each other

Like Tashi says, “tennis is a relationship” and it’s basically like the two players making love on the court, considering it’s a game with the term ‘love’ meaning zero points and playing not for points but for love of the game

Yea I love how intimate and beautiful this movie is, how they bamboozled us all into thinking there were rated r scenes and by the trailer I didn’t know what to expect so I almost didn’t go see in in theaters and I’m so happy I did just for the cinematic experience and the performances were so great. Kind of a perfect movie (9/10 bc the music threw me off at some points but you mentioning it leading the scenes instead of being in the background makes sense) can’t wait to see it again on streaming when it’s out

I think this movie ultimately is about how winning doesn’t matter, you’re friendships do. At the start of the movie they couldn’t care less who wins the juniors, they had each other and that’s all that mattered. In the third act winning against each other literally becomes the greatest most important thing of their lives. But in the end they remember what it was like to be friends and not care about the win
