I don't think anyone would consider this video to mean your support of abuse. Its fucked up when people who make cool art make bad decisions. Seperating art from the artist is probably the most difficult thing we do as an audience and i choose to look positively at this movie which kickstarted a lot of cool actors into getting recognized. Its a shame people do bad things, and by all means whatever negativity comes to Max is deserved of course. Hope the people he has hurt get the help they need. On the point of shared interests, I spent a _year_ oblivious to my current partner (6 years as of yesterday) flirting with me because _I_ thought she was just nerding out with me about the nerdy shit I was doing. As she tells me, "it was both, you dork". My obliviousness aside, that year laid the foundation for my interest in her, because I enjoyed sharing things with her. And when life is hard, as it gets sometimes, that foundation is what I lean on. And that's important to me in particular because I spent years after high school splitting off from everyone I knew every 3-6 months when life got hard, and those people were cool and awesome people but we didn't share anything foundational. That splitting off became something of an impulse by habituation, so what I share with my partner now is vital to me holding onto what I'm going to want in my life when things are better again.

man i watched chronicle by chance as a kid around the same time you did. i was over a friends house and barely understood the nuances of the movie but still felt profoundly impacted by what i saw. the movie was so important to me even though i never watched it again. it just served as sort of a mental milestone i guess and really opened my mind up to a lot or moral quandaries and complexities that comes with being human. i think that paranormal or sci-fi is often more authentic or human than reality because it really serves to highlight what humans are like by contrasting their behavior or actions against their strange circumstances. chronicle was always a landmark in my mind but i could never quite put into words why. so thanks for making this video. it was super cathartic.

Its hard to find movies that tell their story so well that you feel no need for a sequel. It might be nice to know what Matt does after the story, how the world handles knowing there are super powered humans, what the all about the rock. But as you mention in the video, those things don't really matter. It isn't Matt's story, its Andrew's, and Andrew is gone. Anything more to this story and it just becomes X-Men or any other generic superpowered human story. This was a story about a young man dealing with things he couldn't handle alone and he felt unable to talk to others about. He felt helpless and no amount of support from his cousin or his new friend were going to make that better because others made him feel worthless and unworthy of being loved and helped. It was a story about being a teenager that just happened to involve super powers.
@phicks7963 Жыл бұрын
One thing I know for sure. Andrew didn't deserve to die, no matter how evil he got nor for how long. Andrew needed more compassion from Matt and a really needed Steve. The death of Steve is the First thing to truly break Andrew and without Steve Andrew became truly lost in the world. The Moment Steve yells "I'm your Best Friend!" At Andrew really breaks my heart, Steve genuinely cares for and likes having Andrew as his friend.

And I love how you didn't paint Andrew Detmer as a villain because he's not really a villain but really just misunderstood... When Andrew was apologising to Steve at his graveside, telling him how much he misses him is the last time he was open and vulnerable. Andrew completely gave up on being a better person after Steve dies so he decides to be the apex predator. Mannn... thank you so much for providing such a good video 👍

This is easily the best found footage, because when you watch most found footage films your wondering "why are they still filming" but it makes sense in Chronicle because the main character uses the camera as a part of an escapism from reality and the abuse he suffers. Also, the way they told a story about people getting powers and showing the tragedy of going down a dark path when everything is going wrong in your life and you become too far gone, incredible film.

You guys are missing the point that OP said in the beginning. Chronicle nailed it better because it answered the question of why the people are still filming the events when the events are simply just that crazy. At a certain point in most found footage films, it really doesn't make sense as to why they're still filming shit when people are going through what they're going through, but towards the end of Chronicle neither Matt nor Andrew are actually filming anything anymore, and the only one who tries to is the one who's going on a rampage and about to die

I loved the screenplay to the sequel of Chronicle called Matyre. It really did show that anyone would be capable of going to far once they have been push all their buttons. I'm glad Max Landis even gave an answer to MOGO is. No longer in suspense on the origins of the glowing rock and the direction the film could have gone granted it was given a trilogy. But i also understand why Josh Trank did not want to make a sequel, the ending of the movie was perfect as it was. I just wish we could see more relatable movies that are down to earth and relatable. Not everyone would becoome superhoes or vigilantes off the bat. Chronicle is my all time favourite movie and it's inspired a lot of concepts I have developed in the past. Thank you for making this video. I really hope we get another adaptation because I'd love to see a more realistic approach on how the world would react to videos of teenage boys flying around and causing so much distruction. There's absolutely no way the higher ups can cover up such a story.

I don't remember seeing this movie when it came out (I was 14 at the time and was never much of a cinema guy) - maybe I saw (parts of) it on German Free TV, but didn't think much of it then. But after watching _CinemaWins_ video on it in 2017, I immediately knew this was something for me, watched it and really came to like it, trying to find video essays and other analyses after, as I always do with films I like to find out about details I may have missed myself, but finding few such videos. (Only other one being one by _CaptainMidnight_ ) Now by some YT-coincidence I found this, your, video on it and it has so many aspects I (and others I watched) never really considered but hearing about them I found myself thinking "Yeah, that explains a lot" and "That's what I liked about it, too...". Thank you for this, nice job : ) As a kid I considered myself "half autistic", being very introverted and socially awkward as hell, never knowing what to make of other people and partly "living in another world". As an adult I now know that's not that far from the truth, as autism is considered a spectrum now and I'm probably on the light ("high functioning") end of it. Another possible aspect may also be my anosmia (lack of a sense of smell), which may make it even harder for me to "read" people, especially when it comes to romantic interaction, as much more of it is subconsciously based on or at least enhanced by smell than most think. As a result of my social awkwardness and not "fitting the norm", I was of cause bullied at school, with my coping mechanism essentially involving an imaginary version of our world where, thanks to a new kind of technological device, I and a few other so called "agents" were able to control the two fundamental forces of this world: Matter and Mind. I used the same model to rationalize (and thereby also cope with) almost every fictional superpower or machine, so I could use it for myself and, sometimes more importantly, it couldn't be used against me - justification being that if _this_ was real, my universe would be, too. _Chronicle_ to me was essentially this kind of scenario, as a film: A realistic depiction of a clearly defined but creatively used superpower and what "normal" people would do with it if they got it. I of cause identified particularly with Andrew, being outcast from society like he was and dreaming of super-powered revenge on my earlier tormentors all my life - although I'd never wanted to kill them, not even really cause them (physical) pain if not necessary. I only wanted for them to acknowledge my superiority over them, thereby leaving me alone.

Hi, sorry, I know this video is two years old (and it’s GREAT btw), but I just had to say this… When you opened up about your experience with autism/neurodivergent/whatever it is, it really resonated with me. Obviously not 100%, everybody’s different, but there are some key points you said that lined up with me greatly. I can personally relate to most of how you described it, I’ve seen them described in text, I know other people with these characteristics, and I’ve seen characters in media that portray some of these, but I couldn’t really connect with any of them. When you opened up about it, it’s the first time I’ve ever HEARD it from someone else. I don’t know why, but it made me feel… idk, understood? Like I’m not alone i guess. I’ve always known LOGICALLY that I’m not alone, but, actually hearing you describe your experience made me FEEL it. So, thank you. I don’t have too many issues, but after hearing what you said, I almost teared up (not in a sad way). I don’t know why, maybe because it’s late or I’m stressed but hearing that REALLY helped me. And I’m sure there’s someone out there more messed up than me who needed to hear that a lot more than I did, so… thank you. Again, great video, and sorry to comment on an old video, and I wish you the best ❤

As an autistic person, idk if people said this already, but plenty of autistic people are able to make friends easily, we just need to approach it differently than neurotypical folks. I don't think you talked about it without tact, just wanted to mention that many of us find it easy to make friends but dont connect with friends in the same way. and many of us say that it is better as a term to describe how our brains are wired different than most, and is best used as an identity descriptor around that than a formal diagnosis.

Agree somewhat with the autism allegory, though as a female with low needs/Lv. 1 autism, I want to stress that Chronicle speaks specifically to a violent tragic experience of *male* autism. Females/AFAB go through ASD hard too, but in markedly different ways, and this distinction is critical to make when resourcing and helping ASD people. Actually--this has me thinking about how the same premise would unfold if the trio were female. Like the original I don't think it would end well at all, but I'm not sure it would be quite so bloody or end in psychosis either. Or perhaps it would be gory, and I'm flattering too much. How do you see it playing out?
@Plutoniumcube3 жыл бұрын
I have not seen or heard of this movie before, but now it has piqued my interest. I think the themes of the film, as described here, resonate with me in a bit of a different way than what you described here. You say here (oversimplifying of course) that Chronicle is a sort of reflection of your life and interests. Yet, to me Chronicle feels like the type of adolescence I wanted to live (killing people aside). When I was really young, I had a lot of creative side projects and ideas that I either didn’t pursue out of confusion on how to achieve them or because I had a fear of failure, both internally and externally. One of those things was documenting my life like Andrew does. When I was in High School, I even did it a bit through keeling a diary through COVID and, before that, recording the sound of the busy shop during robotics meetings and all the chatter. I still have those and I cherish them a lot. The whole film kind of reminds me of my friends and I mucking around in the creek near our house and walking around the neighborhood. Something I didn’t do nearly enough of because of school. And with them…. Well, it certainly gave me mixed feelings about the whole cast analogy. I’ve had a lot of my friends for around a decade now, and I don’t really share any interests with most of them. It really sucks, and at the beginning I tried to force my interests upon them, but over time I learned to just do stuff together, and it kind of evaporated. But, there sometimes was a sting of emptiness with that. We would just walk around and not really know how to talk. It’s really a prescient thing that makes me think….

In regards to the apex predator line, I always saw it as an extension of his camera. A way for him to further separate himself from everybody else. He's clearly got anger issues which he's suppressing, which unleash during the climax, and thinking of himself as "superior" to everybody else is a way for him to alleviate any guilt he has for his violent thoughts towards others. Giving himself a "logical" and "scientific" reasoning why it's ok. Also after the party, he spirals back downwards, separating himself from even Matt and Steve, because his life suddenly getting better falls apart (Which for someone in his situation, is understandable, given his mental state). So, thinking of himself as "superior" to everyone else is also a way for him to convince himself that he's not like them. Humanity has rejected him unfairly (in his mind), and he's better than that, he would never do that. So he's created a perfect cocktail of mental reasoning for him to go on a rampage at the end. Although, if you notice, Andrew never once attacks anyone without provocation (outside of Matt, who's trying to stop him, and his dad which... yeah, understandable). The closest he comes is when he shatters the glass to steal everyone's phones, and some people may have gotten hurt from that, but he didn't intentionally hurt anyone with that action. Any time he intentionally tries to hurt anyone, they've always attacked him first.

This movie meant the world to me then and when I recently re-discovered it after watching "The Place Beyond The Pines" (another GEM) and recognized Dane DeHaan's face and couldn't figure out why I was already in love with his character at first glance. Did a little deep dive and realized I adored him bc he played the shit out of Andrew. I decided to give it a rewatch last night to see if it would still amaze me the way it did when I was 13 at 23 and I'm even more in love and obsessed with it then I was back then. One of my favorite movies of all time and definitely one of the best, if not the best found-footage film of that genre and I think the only "super (anti-) hero" movie masterfully done in this style to this day. As a neurodivergent, it also scares me sometimes how much I relate to Andrew but I think that's what makes his character so complex and multidimensional as u mentioned. The actors and their bond really brought this script to life.

i remember just walking in the living room as a kid seeing my mom n step dad watching movies like project x or chronicle & i fell in love with these found footage films. especially with powers they had ofc i was all over it as a kid😂. growing up i always wondered if people even knew about this movie because no one would talk about it so i forgot about it until one day my friend spent the night and it hit my brain as a movie we can watch & he fell in love with tht shi😭

30:41 I mean to the Sydner Cut people kinda riot to have the 4 hours movie 39:00 I'm sorry but no you can not put what happens here on Steve, because let's pretend that he didnt vomit on the girl and had his first time there , do you think he would still would have go as crazy has he did ? NO probably no , so the problem was more so that Andrew did not know how to deal with bad experience and being hurt than Steve pushing him to far.

You may have ADHD. There's a lot of overlap between it and autism and the things you said you can relate to seem to fall within that overlap. I have ADHD-PI and can also relate to most of that.

Alright about the underlying autism/on-the-spectrum messaging on this entire thing, the exact moment you mentioned the bouncing knee or moving feet when you're overstimulated. I realized that I was bouncing my knee as well. I have the opposite! If I'm not stimulated enough, I need to move just because it keeps me in the moment (I feel)

I stim (eg knee bouncing, tapping, etc etc) when I'm _internally_ overstimulated. Too much going on in my head, it's distracting from whatever outside of me I'm trying to pay attention to, and stimming feels like a pressure release valve kind of. Like venting that excess mental energy into my body so I can pay attention better.

Still trying to love that flick, could have been something epic like Akira. Sadly the quick decline of Andrew didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Everything going down the drain because he vomitted on a girl. Even getting a girl into the bedroom was probably further than 90% of dudes in his school ever got, so they making fun of him didn't make any sense, and him getting so butthurt about it that he completely goes off the rails didn't make sense either lol

uhhh i dont think Andrew is autistic... hes a product of an abusive household, buddy, chill out. neither is Tetsuo, again, they are products of abuse, whether by their gang or by their parents.

Great essay. The only thing that I didn't like it was the last quarter about the possibility of you being on the spectrum... It seemed quite out of the tone of the video.

Just dunno why dey don't continue dis franchise, I can think of a million different plots dey can take it. First of all at the end when Jake takes Andrew camera to dat village he always wanted to go, I would've made the camera shake n fall as Jake had turnt around to continue his hike. Den in the sequal continue how Andrew passed over the other side but didn't die due to he's advance knowledge of the power, this would mean I'd make earth go through catastrophes, making all the government and everyone normal human start to question is this the act of god, whilst I would have Jake living his life but having to be brought back into the fight cah he's the only one who knows and can sense Andrews conscience still alive. Dis would be where I'd make Jake go back to the village and having to piece how and why Andrew is doing this. Den I would take it to a mini series whi h would show us what Andrew gets up to on the other side and hes plan, just to make a third and forth movie which would be ghe conclusions between the two freinds beef.

Wow this was an amazing video, you were able to express so well what I loved about this movie. Just saw it today and it’s already impacted me so much and is one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen. You did an amazing job

The word problematic has lost its meaning because things like worshipping Jesus or having Friends who happen to be police or military are apparently "problematic" these days

This video is fantastic. I don’t want to be that guy either but exploring your gender isn’t an option. I appreciate your honestly and artistic flare. But I’ve cracked the code on that and if you need to talk I’m here

I think you should have done a teensy bit more research on autism before writing that script ngl. There are widely considered to be "levels" of autism, so to speak. The "levels" describe the amount of support the person needs. If you are autistic (using "if" because you express some uncertainty on the matter), this would be why you feel more 'functional' than you percieve other autistics as being. Not all autism is equal, basically. These are terms coined by autistic people by the way, just so we're clear. The idea that autistic people are not unempathetic is also not necessarily correct. Some autistic people *are* low-empathy, it *is* a possible symptom. Unfortunately, people who try to offer a "sanitised"/cutesy/aesthetic view of autism and mental illness in general have been kinda erasing it along with other "ugly"/"negative" traits.

The way you read all these signals as autism are all the ways I read this movie as a really great allegory for school shooters and it felt really clear to me and I’ve seen nobody mention it
