One of the most interesting European Royal families by far. And from the moment they took power their lives were all wrapped up in this Intrigue and murder and all kinds of infamy. William the conqueror is also very interesting. Some of these plantagenet queens were considered that she Wolves of England and they all descend from William the Conqueror and before that the Vikings. There's a great plantagenet documentary on the BBC Channel on KZbin, it's three parts but it's well worth it.

Modern historians always make the mistake of projecting Machiavellian standards and attitudes on medieval people. They seem unable to appreciate that the issues of conscience, of religious belief and the law of God were very real, and were more a united expression of the community's standards than were the king's laws. King's law was about earthly power and money. Values of human life, justice and integrity - as conscience - were identified with the people. Not the way the English church was after Henry VIII, something to do on Sunday or at Christmas. It was real. It was the people's justice. But it's wrong to presume Henry's penitential walk to Canterbury was a bit of P.R. He believed he has sinned, and that his near-immediate loss of his wife, his son, and the support of his countries in England and in France were a sign that God was taking way what was believed a divinely bestowed right to rule. Henry remembered his conscience.

"Why would the loss of Anne of Bohemia cause Richard II to go so off keel?" That simple to answer. Richard II honestly thought he had control granted by God, that basically he could tell God what to do. He very likely commanded God to make Anne better and then she died. It was the first time he thought God defied him personally, and he went bonkers. Well, more bonkers.
