As a game developer, when I hear "it won't be multiplayer initially" it is a crazy red flag. One does not just simply convert from singleplayer to MMO without basically restarting from zero... the way your code interacts is fundamentally different.

I had the same thought, then I asked myself (as someone who has played games for 40 years): "How many games have I played that started out single player and were patched to multiplayer over time?". I'm sure there have been some, but I couldn't recall any that I've played.

I remember when I was a kid, I tried to build a car in my garage, my dad said it was gonna be a lot of work and money and I just thought he was being a tight wad. He compromised and told me if I can rebuild my bike then he would help, I tried, it was beyond both my grasp and strength at the time, the crankshaft was not gonna ever be rebuilt. Are you exaggerating when you say you thought your dad was "being a tight wad"? As a kid, I regarded my father's words as realistic or reasonable; and I never overestimated my own thoughts. I was in fact, underestimating myself. I never thought my dad was "being a right wad". Maybe I need to adopt a more confident outlook. Later on in life, I discovered that many of my ideas were in fact doable. And I was very much a pessimist when it came to what would and wouldn't work. Overly conservative.

I can't say if hes a good coder or not without seeing code, but if hes not a scammer he is absurdly inept at estimating the work needed to complete a project and that is a skill we should have in the Lead Programmer position which he is claiming to be, in essence. Personally I do think hes full of S because he tried to close the studio and 'back away' till it became clear there were legal ramifications. I will never understand some game developers' desire to make their own engine. It's like being a carpenter and before one builds anything, they have to design and manufacture their own tools. If a developer aims to do something groundbreaking or very specific that no other existing game engine can do, it is rational to first build the engine, but 99 % of indie developers won't create something that groundbreaking. What Caspian and others like him don't seem to get is that when one is getting paid to do something, that's not the time to be a full-on nerd and learn new stuff, instead it's the time to get things done. Creating a game engine can be cool and a good learning experience, but don't do it on other people's dime if that's not what they paid you for.

@@lightworker2956 If you have the know-how, it *was* lucrative enough to be worthwhile. That's why Bethesda, Valve, Epic Games, etc all made their own game engines. Of course, in the current day, it's no longer viable due to the fact that Unity & Unreal can do almost anything you'd want, and it's easier to hire for those skillsets, so nobody would buy your janky game engine. I know I've commented before on Caspian's explanation why it takes so long for him to show anything because he wants to do everything right, but it really annoys me as a developer myself. He must have only worked in the most extreme of waterfall models before if he thinks he has to essentially finish the project in a polished state before anyone can ever test it out. It's such a cop-out to say that the networking and exception handling and other stuff has to be finished. Hasn't he heard about mockups? Ugh, it's so very frustrating to hear another developer having this bonkers mindset. Stuff like that makes me question that he has ever worked as a programmer (I know he has, but I'm doubtful he was any good or effective at it). How did he ever get something done at Microsoft or wherever he has worked before? The client must have been waiting forever for any kind of progress.

Idk man how is "he cosplayed a game developer on the crowdsource money with no intention to ever be held accountable, avoided working with teams that could help, then just release a shitty half version of the thing and NEVER INTENDING TO OWN ANY OF HIS ACTIONS" not a scam? He does not intend to release the game he crowdsourced for. He had basically shareholders but because our legal system doesn't understand Kickstarter he doesn't get to be held responsible even though he is a businessman asking for investment and he takes and wants zero accountability to his failures as a CEO and a salesman. He offered investment in a game he never will manifest because of his ego. If it's not a scam, it's a grift. He mentioned NFTs, he has lived off the crowdsource and gotten to play CEO but he can't be fired by his board because of how he asked for investors. It's semantics if you he isnt a fraudulent business owner. And it feels really like a laugh to think he hasnt been manipulating this from the front. The malignancy is "i want what i want on the backs of others with no accountability"

He's certainly more of an ideas man who's more in his element and seems to prefer pure design. That's fine if you're strictly a designer and not acting as chief exec, lead dev and everything else. I'm the same, full of ideas but usually struggling to see a project through on a reasonable timescale... which is why I keep things as a hobby and don't take people's money for it. I don't need to constantly be stressed and answer to a group of people who are justifiably upset just because you can't help but make promises you can't possibly keep. Just goes to show you can be moderately intelligent and a competent technical professional but still completely lack common sense. Anyone could've been blinded by passion and end up in Casper's situation, but it takes a stubborn fool to stick at getting nowhere instead of throwing your hands up and cutting your losses.

First, I want to keep hearing about this slow motion train wreck, so thank you for another installment! I am most interested in trying to understand how a person like Caspian is able to delude himself about his abilities and his weaknesses for so many years, and why no one is able to stop him or persuade him to change course. Because Caspian is obviously not the only story like this one in the realm of the games industry or business and other human enterprises in general. As for him showing gameplay from even a somewhat finished game, I'm guessing that various parts of the game including key game mechanics, user interfaces, animations, inventory systems, etc. were developed to various levels and then put aside to work on other priorities or scrapped completely because of some problem and restarted from scratch, and so Caspian never had a quick and easy way to put all the pieces together for an actual demo. If you could ever find one of the developers who would talk about how Caspian handled scheduling goals and tasks and what blinded him to his lack of overall progress, I would most like to see / hear that.

If there's actual intellectual property other developers are willing to pay for, why did it not help with the game? Was every developer at Elyria working full time on the tools for the game? Why did he do another funding round and take the covid relief money and then let everyone go? While death threats are never okay, seeing his belittling behavior is also not okay.

Sometimes you have to admit defeat and walk away, and there is *no* shame in that! Failure is part of life and learning. Do you really want them to grow up to be as neurotic as you appear to be? You're living a logical fallacy called "sunk cost", where you're unable to take the L and move forward with your life. Let. This. Go. Find a new job, start earning some money, take it on the chin, dust yourself off, and learn the lessons. I fear you're stuck in a downward spiral and will ruin the rest of your life tilting at windmills. It's not worth it. Please let this go. I don't think you're a bad man, I just think you can't seem to stop lying to yourself. Stop, before it really is too late.
