I can agree with that. I mean it was the original intention so it makes sense why they have much more variety than the newer models.

I'm currently playing through this. A lot of people criticise the new look backgrounds. Personally, I like the way they look. They're not as good as a proper upscale, but I think the AI filter they used gives it a nice look. However, I have not played the original so I don't have nostalgia for it. And also I'm playing in handheld mode on the Switch. It doesn't look as good on a larger screen. But the performance really is bad. At first I thought it's a turn based RPG, so frame rates don't matter that much. But they're so bad that it reduces some battles to a slide show, which does suck a lot of the enjoyment out of it. It makes a lot of the normal enemy encounters feel like more of a chore than they should be. I think the problem is the emulation is *too* accurate. Because the new models have more polys, it's slowing down as much as an actual PS1 would if the game had that many polys. But that's no excuse, I'm pretty sure there are PS1 emulators that can improve frame rates to be better than the PS1 could do.

Initially the FPS of early FF games are pretty terrible and never were anything to rave about, but raising the FPS also raises the speed of the game so that's why its most likely the reason why it never goes above that cap or the game will work improperly. I am curious to see what solutions people have done to remedy because I have seen it for titles that have these problems, but not many are fixed in this manner.

@@Kelphelp I understand the need for an FPS cap, but in this case it goes well under whatever cap there might be. If it was a solid 30 or 25 FPS it would be fine. But it's not, the frame rate is really variable and drops down to probably around 15, maybe lower.

Well I'm kind have a mixed reaction for this remasterd, not bad but not great too It is a good way to play the game on HD tv, and also the first time than this game is release in Europe (and so with official translation for French, German and Italian), but it feel just like a dummy port from the PS1 and less than a remasterd. I think if this game have true 16/9 ratio and 60fps, to give a better experience than the OG PS1 version, this is what I consider as a good remasterd. Square Enix have issue to remasterd 3D PS1 classic, like with FF8, but it's weird because their PS2 remasterd like FF10 , FF12 or the Kingdom Hearts are really good. But once again, even if it's not a awesome way to play it, it's still nice to have a way to play Chrono Cross 👍

Maybe it has to do with who or what team makes these remasters. The biggest flaw I can never ignore are the blurry backgrounds (which is why I always get them on PC with mods). But like you said, the PS2 games are done really well, so it's pretty weird how it goes up and down that way.

I figure Square Enix is going to look at your review. “You guys have some work to do in order to make this right.” •Make the old and newer pre-rendered backgrounds, models, fonts and character portraits interchangeable for a variety of different combinations based on the player’s choice. ~Add these into the options menu •Then Fix the frame rate for when the player is using all the newer options. Things to improve on in the future; •If you plan on Upscaling FMVs don’t only do it to the intro FMV. You need to do it for all of them. •If you plan on continuing to Upscale pre-rendered background in the future. Try different options with the Ai. Some places look off more than others. Learn from this experience and improve with future titles.

Now this...isba hell of a list and you are fir sure right. I would love interchangeable models between styles, fps fixes (and I didn't mention it plays the same on PC btw) and scanline options. I do stand by and feel this is a solid collection and does its job, ND I'm fine with that but it does need more work to become great.

It can be pretty terrible on the new models which isna damn shame. But it runs well enough on base. Not the best situation but that's how it is.

This is impressive. For old hats like us I do wish they would put some kind of CRT/PVM Filter so we can get proper scanlines as an option. Personally I really love how RFU looks. But, overall I believe that this is a wonderful option for gamers. Great episode as always Kelphelp!
