Also, "Another Eden: A Cat Across Time and Space". The game's a spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger, and one of the composers for the game is Yasunori Mitsuda. Masato Kato, one of the writers for Chrono Trigger, is the one writing the game's story. The game has even had a crossover with Chrono Cross.

It's one of the best Squaresoft Titles out there, along with FF9. Well, to me. It's one of the little known experimental Squaresoft title that is flying under the radar of most people. I wish for a worthy remake of this one, because playstation 1 graphics suffered a bit, even tho, it looks good on emulators with graphics improvements.

Yasunori is the "international" version of Nobuo Uematsu. While Uematsu is and always has been a prog rock guy, Mitsuda loves his Celtic and other world music influences. He's also much more high strung than Uematsu. I think the intensity of his music can be overwhelming and emotional. Time's Scar is an example, of course, you can listen to "Battle with Magus" if you want to hear another crazy one.

Yasunori Mitsuda strikes again! After the Xeboblade one last week, I knew the floodgates were opened. This OST hits hard for me, cuz Chrono Cross, much like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, was a defining piece of my childhood. This game and soundtrack alone made me fall in love with videogame music, RPGs, writing, designing and many other things. Thinking that this soundtrack was made for a PS1 game still blows my mind and I've been listening to It for almost 2 decades now...

About Yasunori Mitsuda. He wanted to be a game composer was upset that he wasn't given the chance despite having worked for Squaresoft for a while at that point. He went into the office of Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, and said he wanted to compose a game or he would quit. Sakaguchi told him in response that he'd compose the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger, which long story short, was a really big deal. He put so much into that game that he worked long hours, to the point of passing out at his desk. He would then dream about composing music and wake up and make the music he dreamt about. He worked himself so hard he had to be hospitalized. I have always loved his work and have included his name into my usernames for decades (Mitsuda fan) because of how much he has moved me.

One of my favorite intros of all time. I was just hunting it down on KZbin on impulse because I wanted to hear it again, and when I saw the existence of a reaction video I simply could not fail to click on it. You are not alone in wishing it was longer, and the reaction of “This is from a video game?!?” was priceless in part due to it being a reaction many of us had when first hearing such things. Another excellent one is Xenogears. The opening to the game likewise draws one in, is amazing music, and true to the themes of the game, ends with a few notes from the ending song, which is also amazing. The titles are I am Alpha and Omega, and Small Two of Pieces, respectively. I’d love to see reactions to those if you get around to them.

I’ve never played Chrono Cross. But given of what I know of the plot, and my eternal love for Chrono Trigger, I have refused to touch it. However, Time’s Scar is one of if not my favourite song/track ever. I just can’t get enough of it. Whenever I listen to it, I HAVE to listen to it again. And watching your reaction was no exception. I just HAD to rewind the video and listen with you from the beginning. I just love it so so so much. And I love the soundtracks for Chrono Trigger/Cross just as much. Yatsunori Mitsuda is one of my Gods of Music because of it.

Chrono Trigger is on my top ten video games of all time list. Having said that, I absolutely loved Chrono Cross. Without spoiling it, CC is the result of the meddling of the heroes in CT, which is why this song is titled Time's Scar. It is, in some ways, a side story, but it does intersect with CT at several points. It is a far more mature and darker story then CC, but in my opinion is worth it. The story has stuck with me all these years (I got CC at launch), and in no way tarnished my memories of CT. I may be in the minority (I know most prefer one and hate the other), but I'd suggest giving CC a try. Just...expect something very different in terms of story, gameplay and characters. Know the connections to CT are subtle, but they *are* there, and that CC's story could not occur without CT.
@aeonise
@aeonise 2 жыл бұрын
Cross is absolutely worth playing, even if you just have to approach it as unrelated to Trigger. Frankly, that's probably the best way to approach it since those connections are tenuous and overall quite minor in the plot. If memory serves, the connections amount to two fairly short scenes (that are mainly tangents to the plot), a handful of dialogue, and a whole lotta Easter eggs that might have been supposed to be real links at one point but got chopped down. And the final boss, but that was so poorly done and out-of-nowhere they actually retconned *Trigger* (in the later ports) to make the connection work. In short, all Trigger references could be removed pretty easily without altering Cross, and you can ignore them or treat them as mere Easter egg references instead. And you should, because Cross is a great JRPG in its own right. Suffers a little from Suikoden Syndrome (character overload), but the combat was a unique and mostly successful experiment based on the classic turn-based design, the locations and characters are great, and the story is actually really good independent of any Trigger connections.

@@theredknight1757 same for me. the thing about cross that is diferent from trigger is that, in cross, its about everyone pulling their weight to try and stop the things that are about to happen. in many ways, its more of a "you dont need to be a hero to save the world" kind of thing.

I remember walking home from school listening to this on an old portable cd player and crappy headphones. I always got those musical chillies listening to it. Oh, just the game I love the most! I like how Chrono Cross starts with that existential crisis melancholy that the game has a lot of. Sets the tone right out of the bat. If you really like the idea of intro songs for video games, there is another one that I know of that goes beyond and turns it into an anime intro, because the intro plays every time you load the game, as if you were starting a new episode, the game is called *Wild Arms 2* and it's just incredible. Painfully short, but incredible, highly recommended.

*Yyyyeahh!!* I was hoping for this one! Chrono Cross's soundtrack is a masterclass in thematic mood music and storytelling through music. It reminds me a little of the AOR scene in the sense that the whole OST holds to a tight theme despite the wide range of emotions and situations it portrays, giving it a very coherent, made-for-album feel. It very much deserves to be listened to as a whole. Time's Scar (or Scars of Time, as I originally saw it translated) is a perfect introduction to the game and its music. That "Where's the rest? What's next?" reaction means it did its job and hooked you good, but it also introduces the musical theme for the game (evoking a pre-industrial, tropical island setting) and gives you a sense of the story themes as well (a tale of things set in motion long before, full of adventure and danger, not without tragedy and loss, but heroic and resolute to the end).

Blackmoor's Night!! I love The Circle, but I think my fave is their rendition of Ocean Gypsy by Rennisance. I also am in LOVE with Ghost of a Rose and Morning Star. Jesse, my man I gotta say you keep impressing me more and more with your eclectic tastes, and hooooooooly smokes

xD About the fact that you want more, I used to, I don't remember if starting a new game over and over, or just wait for 10 minutes in that watery main menu. Arg, can't remember which one. But I remember the feeling of wanting more.

I just so happened to wonder on your Channel with the song and I had loved it I would love if you did another Chrono cross song reaction even if it's a full Orchestra remake of one of the songs like radical dreamers

There's a song or two in xenoblade 2 that share almost the exact intro to Time's Scar. Given the context those songs play, the base subject is unironically the same, just different facets of it.

I really miss these types of video game intros, and this game probably takes the cake for me as my favorite video game intro. This game has really good music and brings me back to those old days where I enjoyed the games in peace.

This song was the wedding party's processional at my wedding. Those who knew were into it. Those who didn't... were into it. :)

Another great game intro is Legend Of Dragoons intro, I think it's called If You Still Believe, I used to turn the game console on and just let the music play

After the intro to the game is the main menu, if you wait on the menu you get a demo video which plays some clips of gameplay and has the song "Dreamwatch of time" Imo its kinda like a second main theme and its amazing.

Yeah, there’s a lot of things from that era of video games that don’t exist anymore. Flipping through the manual to hype up the experience to come. Those demos/trailers that play on the start menu when you don’t touch the controller. And being experimental with mechanics and story elements.

5:35 Oh nice reference, I love Blackmore's Night! Yer right, this song sounds a lot like them. It reminds me of "Locked Within the Crystal Ball"

Oh god, Chrono Cross takes me back. The PS1 era had so many good games and good songs, especially the intros. If you are looking for another song to react too from this era, I would recommend Into the Wilderness from Wild Arms. The acoustic guitar really pulls you into the wild west fantasy adventure that awaited you.

Flash back when I was a kid and hear this intro for the first time, why I have no Idea what a jrpg or a game is. I remember frozen and was like how the hell this came from a video game. Its insane how music in the video game industry kick so much ass

IMO, as an opening, KH2 is better, but if we separate the audio from the video, maybe this one is a better piece overall.

@@Luso1221 Most things are a better opening than Chrono Cross, besides the beginning with the journal it's just snippets from every FMV in the game bashed together. Though yes, Time's Scar itself for me is still #1. For best opening I love KH2 but it has to be one of the Persona games, my gut goes with 3 (vanilla Burn My Dread, not FES).
